What a lovely book! The photos are beautiful, and the narratives provide a perfect "slice" of history. My husband picked up the book and was mesmerized by the recipes and descriptions.I've already made the Orange and Olive Oil Cake TWICE to rave reviews. As with other Anne Byrn books, the recipes are easy to follow and require no extraordinary skill. Yet, the results are a crowd-pleaser!

This book has beautiful pictures and great researched history. I am very good at baking. I tried the brownies and a cake recipe and neither turned out well. The brownies, in particular, looked nothing like the picture and were so super sweet I could not eat them. If you love American history/food history this may be interesting. It is a heavy book full of great images. If look for excellent recipes, I would maybe research the title but look on-line for the best recipes. I am not familiar with this lady or her books. She seems popular from the reviews. I just prefer extremely reliable and tested recipes with complete photo accuracy. I will probably read the history part one day.

What an awesome book! I also heard the author on the Stuff You Missed in History Class podcast, and immediately looked up the book. Once I got it, I made a cake with my grandson and ordered my daughter a copy. If you grew up in the 50s or 60s, you'll remember a lot of these. If you have kids, you have to make the oil and vinegar chocolate cake. They just love making it, it's dead easy, and it's a really good cake to boot.

We have used 3 of the recipes in this cookbook. I bought it for the carrot cake recipe and that one is spectacular. The Hummingbird and Coca Cola cake are delicious as well. The recipes are easy to follow. The history of cakes in America is interesting and also worth the read.

If you love baking and eating cake, and learning about the history of cake in America appeals to you, you'll love this book. I've enjoyed reading it cover-to-cover as much as I've enjoyed baking from it. So far I've baked several cakes, including the pineapple-upside down cake and the blitz torte. My husband and my four-year-old have devoured all of my bakes from this book, and I plan to bake many more. This book will have a place on my shelf for years to come. It's a wonderful resource for classic cakes and cakes that deserve another chance in the spotlight! I'll note that I've baked from all of The Cake Mix Doctor books in the past, but I was delighted to see Anne Byrn come out with a more serious, from-scratch cookbook. As an avid baker, I wholeheartedly recommend this cookbook to other cake lovers!

I saw this book at the library and tried the Mary Ball Washington Gingerbread. It didn't turn out right. Mine was short, dense and dark. I took a picture of my cake next to the picture. I knew I still needed this book for the history alone so I bought a copy. I've since tried many recipes and they've each been excellent.The ones I've tried and the photos include:Mary Ball Washington Gingerbread, a failTunnel of Fudge Bundt Cake. This was the first cake I made in my new Anniversary Nordic Ware Bundt Pan. The book includes the history of this pan.The Coca Cola Cake. Pretty good but there are better tasting chocolate cakes. My favorite is the Texas Sheath Cake. I can't find the picture of that one.Wacky Cake. An interesting way to make a dairy free cake in one pan. This one tasted like childhood because my mom would sometimes make this one when I was a kid.The Hershey's Chocolate Cake. It was good but the batter tasted stronger than the cake. Wonderfully moist, soft crumb, it was niceFruit Cocktail Cake. This one is delicious and makes a good breakfast cake. We grew up eating cake for breakfast and I still like partaking in this tradition.Angel Food Cake. Mine was short and light tan in comparison to the picture and the ones I've seen at the store but my was it delicious. It tasted so good I don't care what it looked like. I found online a recipe called a 12 Yolk Pound Cake that I made with the 12 yolks and it was a delicious cake as well.Chocolate Stout Cake. I've been making this cake each year for the Super Bowl since about 2011 and the recipe in this book is the exact recipe I found online and have been making each year. It was fun to learn the history of the cake.I also have learned so many things like how the 9X13 cake pan was popularized by the recipe for Rice Crispy Treats.Definitely a wonderful book and well worth the purchase.

I've had this book for less than a week and have already made two of the recipes. The American Gingerbread and the Moosewood Cardamon Coffe Cake. Both were excellent. I modified them a bit for my personal taste but the recipes as written are wonderful. Up next? The Cold Oven Pound Cake. I've heard of this method before but haven't tried it. I have high hopes that I will have finally come across a great pound cake recipe based on the results so far.

Lots of historical tidbits as well as recipes. One thing that bothered me was that they reference a lot of cakes that they don't have recipes for.

A good read. The three box set were a welcome surprise. I enjoyed them and would do it again if given a chance. The characters are stable and the captain is the story wrapped around him. He continues to surprise me guessing which way he will jump. Lots of fighting. I like all that I would recommend it to all readers of space opera and lovers of action=v .

I have read this series as the books came out. These authors are so creative and their descriptions are so great. I feel like I can see what is going on as I read along. You can't go wrong with this series.

Very different kind of book series, real cleverly done. New type of ideas, I like it and look forward to the rest of the series

The series started somewhat slowly but I hung in there and was pleasantly surprised as the story developed. A good read for science fiction buffs.

Nevertheless, most of them neglect the importance of developing their negotiation skill. And despite of their role in the business, one thing is for sure: they will have to negotiate a lot! With partners, bosses, employees, clients, investors etc.It is amazing how this book translates the negotiation techniques into the entrepreneurship world. By using examples that relate to the day-by-day challenges of most, if not all, start-up companies, the authors are able to offer valuable knowledge on what to do, and especially, on what mistakes all entrepreneurs should avoid. Definitely a must-read for all entrepreneurs.

I have been mentoring entrepreneurs for several years and consulting to some who have reached the "series funding" stage. This is usually the first time they realise they need help with their negotiations; actually they needed it much earlier and got as far as VC funding in spite of themselves! My advice to all entrepreneurs, and to others who have to negotiate in their business lives: Read this book! Learn from the wisdom of the authors and the mistakes of your peers. It could be the most important book you ever read.

I've had several entrepreneurial/early stage adventures (beginning in 2000), and I worked as a colleauge of Samuel Dinnar for more than 5 years (2008 - 2013). I experienced first hand his unique skills as a negogiator in a very large number of situations. When he informed me he had co-written this book, I procured an advance copy and read it straight away. The two take-aways for me are: 1) ANYONE in business should read it . . but especially entrepreneurs. 2) I WISH it had been available 18 years ago, as I recall making all the mistakes outlined in the book. It's the best.

Drawing on their years of experience and research, the authors identify eight common mistakes in the entrepreneurial setting. Each topic is then tied to a real-life story from various entrepreneurs who struggled with the issues during their company life-cycles.Entrepreneurs know about the importance of a business plan, financing, governance, intellectual property protection and a host of other key components for growing a business. Yet, negotiation has not historically been considered a key entrepreneurial skill – with company success/failure viewed as binary options. This book, along with the associated videos, should change that for good. Highly recommended for entrepreneurs and all those dealing with entrepreneurs.

Lots of good, useful information. Much of it proved useful in the planning of our recent African vacation. The safari lodges, restaurants and acommodations that Fodor's discusses tend to be exclusively at the very high end of the price scale. This rather limits the book's usefulness for those of us with a more restrictive budget. These days there's plenty of useful information available free on the internet so the utility of traditional travel guide books is rather diminished.

This guidebook has so much information. My sister and I are planning an African Safari trip and couldn't decide on exactly which countries and areas. This book helped us decide based on ease of transportation, the variety of animals we could see in the wild, and options for where to stay and what to do. Very good resource.

The Kindle edition is missing information from the print edition, specifically maps. It has the detail maps of individual parks, but not the overall Africa Safari Map, or maps of individual countries. Most people don't have a good idea of the relationship between the various locations and not having the maps limits the usefulness of the book for planning.Get the print edition or another book.

A truly informative guide about safaris in general, specific countries and safari companies. Tells you what to look for-best companies, lodging,guides, locations,etc. I found it very useful in planning where, when, and how I want to go.

Just getting started reading this guide, and so far so good. Thumbing around it gets even better. This is a good source of beginning information. I do plan on using a proper travel agent to make my final arrangements, but thanks to this well written and organized guide I will know what I want to see and do. AND what I need to do in preparation for the experience.

There's good information in here, but it's an ultimately shallow experience. It's nice to see the codification of these distributed system design patterns into diagrams and names, but the book mostly seems like Kubernetes promotional material. The book relies so heavily on Kubernetes' config boilerplate to pad its content it's surprising that Kubernetes is not mentioned anywhere in the title. In addition to describing design patterns, this book is pretty rigorous in its adherence to its own simple pattern: Introduce a design pattern with a name and a diagram, describe it briefly, give examples of its practical application with accompanying Kubernetes configurations. Would have liked to see more discussion of the evolution of these patterns along with some case studies. Works OK as a practical companion piece to Kleppmann's Designing Data-Intensive Applications, but at the same MSRP, either this is overpriced or DDIA is a steal. If you have to choose one of them at $44.99, Kleppmann should be your first choice, hands down.

Went over couple of chapters so far. I will start by reviewing it 4. If you are an experienced developer then most of these patterns you have already applied at some point. The book goes over explaining them nicely with practical scenarios. A figure for EACH scenario would have been nice though.However, like other reviewers mentioned the author should not have adopted to using Kubernetes without mentioning it in pre-req. Examples don't provide much value this way. I have read "The Kubernetes Book" by Nigel so was able to understand concepts such as Pod and YAML syntax. The book could have been written keeping the container/micro-service orchestration abstract.

This book outlines the major patterns used in the design of large scale, heterogenous applications in simple, digestible terms. It gives a common language for us all to use as we build systems in the future. While there is still much room for implementation and execution, this book covers the major patterns I’ve seen in both online processing and batch.This book won’t solve whether or not you should build your system as distributed microservices or a monolith, but it will help you design your services once you’ve decided you need them.

Very superficial. Describes a few ways to build some simple distributed applications without discussing the fundamental aspects and tradeoffs of those systems. Most of the information is easily available anywhere on the Internet. If you're looking for a good book on designing distributed systems, don't buy this book. Instead buy the Martin Kleppmann book "Designing Data Intensive Applications".

If you're looking for an application manual for distributed systems, this is the book for you.All you theory-heads, read this first, then split off into the topics that interest you the most.

I loved the author's brevity in order to stay focused on the larger patterns found in distributed systems. This book is heavily tilted to the Kubernetes engineer, but that's EXACTLY what I wanted. I still love paper books and having a lightweight copy I can take almost anywhere, but with material that is anything but lightweight give me the best value of all. Thanks Brendan Burns - awesome job!

Finally a great book from a holistic perspective on distributed system design patterns! Great use of mix language examples to compliment the explanations while not going too deep into the actual codification of such patterns. This is a great reference to have on hand for architecture discussions around distributed systems.

I love this book! I usually don't write reviews for books but this book deserves praise. The book is an easy read with difficult content. This book offers solutions to problems adult children may face. It's practical. It's current. It's just a really really good book about ACOA andThis book offers hope. It also offers suggestions on how to turn character defects into assets.I cannot recommend this book enough!!

Aside from a handful of harsh remarks which are meant to be jokes, this self help book is incredible. Well written, psychoeducational, transformative, inspiring. I loved learning about Erik Erikson's stages of life, family dynamics and roles, the lists, reading the stories. Definately worth the read!

This book was the one thing that changed my life. And I had tried almost everything, for decades. This book freed me from the prison I'd been born into. It set me off on the discovery of things as they truly are, which I had never even suspected. Especially recommended for people with NLD or Asperger's, as a guide to what is not being said.

I gave this 5 stars because I think depending on what you are working on, it could be. It wasn't as helpful to me. I was hoping for something that would tell me more about what "normal" people do because I know that I learned some odd ways of thinking and behaving when I was growing up. It did help somewhat in this, but I think the title is slightly misleading.I recommend this as one of the first books to read if you believe that there might have been something dysfunctional about the way you were raised but you are not sure what or you're just starting your exploration of those issues. It's not a "parent bashing" book, but instead a kind and compassionate book on how to get better, not blame.Chapter 19 about perfectionism resonated with me and gave some nice tips on how to deal with it. Unfortunately, that entire chapter is just two pages long, so it's not worth buying the whole book just for that.It's an easy read and well written, so if you're on the fence, buy it. I think you'll get something valuable out of it.

The book arrived in great shape and fast. I would buy from this seller again. I love this book. I use this with my sponsee's. It's very 'easy' to read, no big words to look up. However, the concepts are sometimes hard to read, but so important to change for the better. I have been using this book for years and have a lot a success with it, combined with the other pieces used in recovery.

I purchased this for a friend after reading it years ago. It’s definitely meant to keep and refer to whenever it is needed! Easy read and gives you answers for everyday situations.

if you grew up in a messed up home, read this. read it before you have kids of your own. one of the more helpful self help books I have read. I like a book that just tells you what to do , or explains why you do the things you do..... I will be passing this one around.

Whoever said it was too cookbook hasn't appreciated the the value of having a thorough one at hand. I loved the Friel's approach. It is a bit harder on the ego than the Woititz ACOA book but this one includes ALL dysfunctions, and I know even after years in recovery I will still find valuable resources in this book to guide me along my bumpy journey. As one who has NO idea what is normal, yet somehow manages to function at the basic level in society, I definitely appreciated the simple yet thorough approach used here.This book isn't another "blame the parents--give you an excuse" soother. It requires that we take responsibility for our adult lives, recovery, happiness, misery, relationships, dysfunctional patterns & our future. This book shows me exactly what healthy (they don't believe in the statistical normal, to them normal means emotionally healthy, which is a far more useful definition of the ambiguous term "normal" anyway) living means, looks-smells-tastes-feels like! I can use this book as a check-up to see if I'm on the right track and if not, follow the suggestions or get further help.Most of all this book helped me to recognize that recovery isn't an overnight process, can't be done alone in isolation, that I'm human and mistakes are actually a GOOD and WELCOME experience and do NOT have anything whatsoever to do with my self-worth. This book even includes several chapters on how to respond to con artists, abusers & generally rude, mean or unhealthy people. How to deal with zingers, how to set healthy boundaries & protect ourselves & our healthy boundaries, I could go on for pages praising this book.I've bought numerous other self-help books & this one was the best. The authors do suggest waiting until one has 2+ years of recovery before tackling this book. To hell with that. Read it now, and every step of the way on your journey.
