This booklet contains the complete Title 47 Part 97 law that forms the basis of regulation for amateur radio. The book is divided into roughly two equal parts. The last half of the book contains the unexpurgated version of Part 97. The first half of the book contains commentary on the law (by Dan Henderson N1ND)--which is helpful since some regulations are rather obtuse (like the definition of "Line A") and like any other law, the interpretation is subject to, well, interpretation. Anyone contemplating joining the ranks of amateur radio operators would be well advised to obtain a copy of Part 97 and read the law. The modest size of Part 97 is somewhat surprising given the natural tendency of governments to over-regulate. However, the FCC has always relied on the fall-back phrase: "each amateur station must be operated in accordance with good engineering and good amateur practice" SubPart B 97.101a.

Every ham ought to have a copy handy - if only to reply to those who want you to "sign" after every transmission.

Very good book for new amateur radio operaters. It spells out the specific rules so you can understand exactly what the rules are

Required resource for Ham radio operators.

Great read!! Love it!!

I just recently got involved in Ham Radio and just received my license to operate an Amateur Radio station. I needed to know just what I'm allowed to do and what I'm not allowed to do. This book covers all aspects of operating an Amateur station so you don't get in trouble with the FCC.

FCC rules in one book. It is what it is. Nothing special just government rules. Good read if you need to go to sleep.

This book is a must for any operator of Amateur Radios. The book is from ARRL, which is the leader in Amateur Radio materials. The book is thin, but the size of a sheet of paper - I would rather have a smaller, possibly thicker book to include in my go kit.I think the book is a little over priced at list as the entire regulations are available online for free and can be printed out. As of my review, there have been some changes to Part 97 - but nothing significant to require a revision. (That means you have to keep up with the regs, something ARRL can help you do!) The book does include ARRL's The FCC Rules and You to give you guidance on how to use the rules in your daily operating.I was fortunate that I paid a fraction of the cost for this book - so keep an eye out and maybe Amazon will discount this book.

I didn't read this book when it first came out , I didn't have the interest. However, we lost our youngest daughter to suicide 16 months ago. When friends of mine saw the movie, they posted on fb how good it was. I decide I would read the book. My heart has ached for the things written in this book. God is good, and healing comes as we forgive and give God the things we cannot control. This is a wonderful book I would recommend to anyone. I'm so glad I read it.

I, a long-time born-again believer, was warned NOT to read this book by brothers and sister in the Faith. For many months, I heeded their "wisdom"; I'm not usually a submissive person to others, so, I was proud of myself for listening. I didn't even listen to "Restoring The Shack" on tv, so as not to be tempted or swayed--until yesterday. Then, I had to buy this book. I've never feared reading any book in my life; in fact, I've always loved and consumed as many as I could get my hands on since before I could read. So, I found it--and myself--absurd in NOT reading it! No book could ever change my Faith in Jesus, nothing is a threat to that, and I was raised with all kinds of knowledge of other religions, superstitions, and even occult things. So, I KNOW lies when I hear them. As a result, I've just finished reading The Shack. Talk about perfect timing! All it did was reinforce what I already know for many years, and the author put into words what I could never express. THANK YOU! I'll be encouraging others to read it. God bless!

I chose a 5 star rating because that is the highest rating you can give on Amazon. The Shack truly deserves more, much more. After reading this book I feel extremely blessed that God chose me to read it. The way this book is written really hits home, if you are having doubts about your faith then this is the book that will help you find a way to seek out God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

Probably the worst book I have ever read! The overall message will turn me away from, not toward, God and religion. SPOILER ALERT: Yes, as a parent, one would still most likely love their child even if they committed a heinous act. But also, as a parent, if you can see your child about to commit a heinous act or acts and you have the power to stop it, but do not, you are the worst possible kind of parent and as culpable as the child regarding the act! Shame on anyone who thinks that any reprehensible act should be forgivable. I am appalled that so many people think the book has a positive message! It made me angry and terrified at what the world has become.

I have read this book twice...it is very helpful to people stuck in unforgiveness...it is theologically edgy but IMHO not in what is stated but in what is omitted...But in fairness the book is aimed at a singular issue and not intended to be a 'book of theology.' It's sole purpose is to help people see that God as love in our suffering rather than one distant and harsh. It also points clearly to the necessity of forgiving others in order to go forward in our relationship with God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Also IMHO it beautifully portrays the different aspects of a living relationship with each.

Loved the book, then went to see the movie. Slightly different ending in the movie, but lovely story. Please do yourself a favor and read the book and see the movie. I think you will be glad you did. Forgiveness of others and especially of self are big themes along with a new perspective on your view of who God is. Get to meet Jesus and the Holy Spirit for a humorous and poignant story.

This book was more than I expected in a good way. The timing of it was wonderful (I didn't realize there was a movie in the making as well) but it offered a lot of insight and affirmed a lot of my own questions. Helped me through a personal struggle with myself, my role as a wife and mother among my other roles and gave me amazing insight and internal motivation. Definitely planted a seed in my heart. Great read.

The Shack first came into my life as the movie. Watching the movie earlier this Year touched my heart during a time when I was moving into a new chapter of my life or should I say chapters. Almost eleven years since I've lost my husband and two years since retirement. The Shack is so brilliantly written and enhances my faith in "Papa". Everyone who has lost a love one or been touched by the life of someone who has lost a love one should read this book. Everyone who has questions about having a relationship with God should read this book. I had to read the book after the movie. Of course, I wish it were the other way around. Everyone should read this book. I shall read it again and again. Thank you for this amazing work of art.

New Black Man: Tenth Anniversary Edition

Review

Deeply personal, wickedly insightful, and politically transformative, New Black Man is a must-read on black men and feminism in the 21st century. Neal demonstrates yet again why he is one of the leading scholar-activists of our time.David Ikard, chair of Africana Studies, University of Miami Mark Anthony Neal is just about as dope as dope can get. In New Black Man, he provided the blueprint for a new generation of black men to do the work of interrogating masculinity, and a decade later it is still the definitive black male feminist text. It's a classic in every sense of the word.Mychal Denzel Smith, Knobler Fellow at The Nation Institute and contributing writer for The Nation Mark Anthony Neal’s critique of old modes of discussing black masculinity is eloquent. Indeed, his analysis of the "the strong black man" and the risks that idea poses to black liberation is long overdue. Engaging, thoughtful, and soulful, this important book is part cultural criticism and part blueprint for a new version of black masculinity (without homophobia and misogyny). I, for one, welcome the arrival onto the scene of the "new black man."Dwight A. McBride, author of Why I Hate Abercrombie & Fitch: Essays on Race and Sexuality You need oxygen to breathe more than the fetid air of homophobia, misogyny, antiblack racism in the empire and its possessions. Read Mark Anthony Neal’s New Black Man. Here, Neal redefines the "burden" and expands the struggle for a society free of denigration and violence.Joy James, author of Shadowboxing: Representations of Black Feminist Politics Mark Anthony Neal has always been a daring scholar, but in this work he does pirouettes on a razor’s edge, deliberately and deftly defying the keepers of the weary worn "race man" trope and all its essentialist trappings.E. Patrick Johnson, author of Appropriating Blackness: Performance and the Politics of Authenticity Mark Anthony Neal’s New Black Man is a fascinating exploration of an important scholar’s acknowledgement of black feminism as a central mode of cultural investigation and a mode of humane existence.Michael Awkward, author of Negotiating Difference: Race, Gender, and the Politics of Positionality Part academic treatise, part soul-baring memoir, New Black Man is the unlikely offspring of hip-hop and feminism. … Neal offers a call to action by challenging not only the conventional white powers that be, but also the black men who sanction inequality by upholding patriarchy and heterosexism.Adam Bradley, The Washington Post Far from being a dull polemic, Neal's new work is sharp, provocative, and often laugh-out-loud funny in the manner of Michael Eric Dyson and Ishmael Reed (caveat: Neal's language can be rough). … [T]his book is a clarion call that should be read by the entire African American community.Anthony J. Adam, Library Journal Mark Anthony Neal’s New Black Man is an exploration of modern black masculinity put into conversation with progressive ideas of feminism, fatherhood, and antihomophobia. … For readers whose knowledge of African American feminism begins with Sojourner Truth and ends with bell hooks, the breadth of Neal’s scholarship will prove very useful.Malcolm Womack, Journal of Popular Culture Throughout New Black Man, Neal's prose drifts interestingly from traditional professor to accessible hip-hop language. Neal presents a very interesting combination of the complexity that is the New Black Man.John C. Kilburn Jr., Magill Book Reviews In a gripping "tell it like it is" style, Neal advocates a different role model―the "New Black Man"―and promotes a theoretical alliance with black feminism. … New Black Man will be an asset to many undergraduate and graduate courses.Jo-Ann Morgan, Journal of American Culture

It is a very well written book. The author is intellectual and insightful and that is very evident in the text of this book. I was not sure what I was expecting out of the book but when I finished I didn't feel the overwhelming need to read it again. Nonetheless still a good read.

This is a new classic

For anyone seeking a better understanding of the inner working of black men - this is the book for you. I love how Neal expresses a mature and uncomplicated view of the inner struggles some black men face. It made me laugh and go "hmmm" I would recommend this book - for mature readers only

Dr. Neal asserts that the decades-old image of the "Strong Black Man" is often used to excuse misogyny and homophobia among black men. He goes on record in detailing how black male adults use the excuse of white racism in order to get away with abusing black women, black children, and black gays and lesbians. Thus, Dr. Neal posits that we need a "New Black Man": one who is committed to supporting black feminism, fighting anti-gay bigotry, and providing childcare for one's biological or adopted children. This book really, really, really needs to be read alongside Patricia Hill-Collins "Black Sexual Politics." This book is original and refreshing, but there are many ways in which it is just a man saying "I second!" to what Dr. Hill-Collins already brought up. Both book name a lot of problems without providing many solutions, but that in no way denies that both are fierce reads. SNAP!This book would be a great introduction to black feminism for men or women. It refers to many other texts on which progressive readers must get their hands. But then again, I thought some texts were missing. His ruminations on hip hop were almost exactly like the one in Rebecca Walker's "Daring to Be Bad" anthology. He talks of black fatherhood, but never mentions Earl Ofari Hutchison who has written two books on the topic. Still, he sometimes praises black women writers that I think are problematic. Julianne Malveaux has written things that I think are obnoxiously homophobic. I once saw a reading where Ntozake Shange was high and yelled out, "You can always a N*GGA to take you home!"Throughout this book, Dr. Neal, a heterosexual brother, gives praise to his academic mentor Dr. Alexis De Veaux, a lesbian sister. I loved this unity across multiple identities. Due to "Will and Grace" and other cultural productions, it is often assumed that gay men and straight women can get along, but it's never brought up whether lesbians and straight men can do the same thing. This book answers that concerns; it almost reminds me of Steve Martin having lesbian friends in the film "L.A. Story."The New York Times, approximately year ago, asked, "What counts for a gay book now that heterosexual writers are writing compelling and non-marginal gay characters and plots?" After years of writing from saints such as Audre Lorde, Essex Hemphill, Joseph Beam, Bev Smith, and many others, now black heterosexuals or blacks that do not posit their sexual identities are writing outstanding work championing gay rights. Besides this text, books by Dr. Guy-Sheftall and Dr. Abdel-Shehid have begun a new and exciting tradition. But to be honest, Dr. Neal spoke much more about sexism than homophobia and in no way do I feel that the straight black men that Dr. Neal critiques are somehow less homophobic than they are sexist. In the same way that he provides a laundry list a canonical black feminist writing, he or some other progressive scholar could write an equally lengthy list of phenomenal works by black lesbians and gay men. He gives catchy titles to all of his chapters but gives his gay chapter the borrowing, and possibly offensive title "Q***rs in a Barrel." He says he hopes his daughters will be able to state proudly whatever their sexual identities are, but he never says point blank, "I would be just as proud of my daughters if they were lesbian or bisexual as if they were heterosexual." If Matt Groening and Barack Obama have made such statements, why hasn't Dr. Neal?Dr. Neal is very humble. He speaks of areas where he still struggles to address sexism or misogyny. He shies away from naming himself the "New Black Man." Dr. Dyson once called Cornel West "the humblest man in the world." That moniker could apply to Dr. Neal. His discussion on sleep apnea is important reading for heavyset brothers and other men who snore loudly at night.Like Dr. Valdivia in "A Latina in Hollywood," this had a gushy chapter on parenting to which I couldn't relate. But if Cornel West and many others have written parenting books, it must be an important concern for many individuals out there. This is a quick read. It may almost remind one of a series of magazine essays, rather than academic work. Many black folk without elite educations should be able to follow it.This was very strong and refreshing cultural studies. I am definitely adding this book to my "Profeminist Men" amazon list.

FROM THE PUBLISHER"'In this book, acclaimed cultural critic Mark Anthony Neal argues that the ''Strong Black Man'' - an ideal championed by generations of African American civic leaders - may be at the heart of problems facing black men today. Despite the good intentions of its creation, he contends, this rigid model is used too often as justification for the oppression and mistreatment of black women and children. Neal urges us to imagine instead a ''New Black Man'' - a revolutionary model of black masculinity for the twenty-first century that moves beyond patriarchy to promote family, community, and diversity.' Part memoir, part manifesto, this book celebrates the black man of our times in all his vibrancy and virility. It is a tribute to a new face on the horizon of black America that is not to be missed."FROM THE CRITICSLibrary Journal"Who or what is the 'New Black Man'? Neal (black popular culture, Duke Univ.; Songs in the Key of Black Life) argues that, to survive, contemporary black men must disassociate themselves from the figure of the 'Strong Black Man' as designed by W.E.B. Du Bois and Frederick Douglass and instead embrace that of the New Black Man, whose strength resides in community, family, and diversity. This new model derides sexism and homophobia, which Neal argues have sprung inadvertently from the models of the past. Far from being a dull polemic, Neal's new work is sharp, provocative, and often laugh-out-loud funny in the manner of Michael Eric Dyson and Ishmael Reed (caveat: Neal's language can be rough). Taken in conjunction with Phillip Brian Harper's Are We Not Men?: Masculine Anxiety and the Problems of African-American Identity, this book is a clarion call that should be read by the entire African American community. Highly recommended for all academic and public libraries."--Anthony J. Adam, Prairie View A&M Univ. Lib., TX Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

In a book entitled "New Black Man," one would expect a cultural critic such as Mark Anthony Neal, a professor at Duke University, to do a lot more than merely reference rap videos and pulp fiction as evidence of how Black American men think. Unfortunately, he doesn't. He is no Gunnar Myrdal, and his assessments of the alleged sexism, ethnic chauvinism and homophobia of black men are largely based on hearsay. This is not to say that black American men aren't frequently sexist, chauvinist or homophobic, or want to dominate their girlfriends/spouses. But Neal does not, in any concrete fashion, analyze the dynamics behind such appalling behavior on the part of certain black men. He just gives us a bunch of attitude, and as such, the book falls flat on its face.

Force of Nature: Mind, Body, Soul, And, of Course, Surfing, by Laird Hamilton

About the Author

Laird Hamilton is known as the guiding genius of crossover board sports, and he is truly amazing in the water. His size--6'3", over 215 pounds--makes him seem indestructible. Laird is the elder son of sixties' surfing legend Bill Hamilton and is a throwback to that time when surfers prided themselves on being all-around watermen. His mother, JoAnn, gave birth to him in a "bathysphere" with reduced gravity as part of an experiment at the UC Medical Center in San Francisco. JoAnn was also a surfer and decided to move the family from California to Hawaii when Laird was just a few months old. They lived on Oahu's North Shore and later in a remote valley on Kauai, not far from one of the world's best surf breaks. He learned to surf between the ages of 2 and 3 on the front half of a surfboard; and at age 8, hi father took him to the 6-foot cliff at Waimea Falls, where Laird looked down, looked back at his dad, and jumped. "He's been bold since day one," says Bill, "and hell-bent on living life to the extreme." He lives in Hawaii and California with his wife and three daughters.

PART 1 MINDWe're all human, which means we all have the same opportunities and the same struggles. It's all about that voice inside our head that we call our mind--what it leads us to believe determines how we act and how our lives unfold. Which is why when I catch myself thinking bleak thoughts, I'll go out and do something physically strenuous, like clear brush or move rocks or paddle down the coast.I believe that our thoughts have real, powerful effects on us. For instance, let's say you wake up one morning in a rotten mood. You don't know why, but you're just looking for a fight. Well, in my experience, the moment you walk out your front door you're going to find someone who wants to fight you back. He'll probably be standing right there. On the other hand, if you're just thinking about enjoying yourself, you're probably not running into a lot of complications. Everything comes down to attitude: You determine what yours is, and the external world will reflect it back.Whether that's good news or bad news depends on you--on your outlook. If you think you're not able to do something, guess what? You're right. What if you believe that everything's for the best and see the beauty all around you, and you have faith that things will be good? You're right, too. If you cultivate something in your mind, you give it a life. It's really that simple.RISK AND ITS REWARDSA LITTLE ADRENALINE EVERY DAY KEEPS THE BOREDOM AWAY.When I was 10, my step father took me to Waimea Falls on Oahu. I walked to the edge of a 60-foot cliff, and when he looked away, I jumped. For whatever reason, from the start it's been in my spirit to do those kinds of things. I've always wanted to jump from the highest place, experience the greatest thrill.I may be an extreme case, but we all need to take risks. I think it goes back to our primitive state, our deepest DNA, when we were hunters and had to avoid getting eaten by large animals. Survival meant risk. The need for adventure is part of human nature. It's in every cell of our bodies. When some people hear the word risk, they think of life-or-death situations that they'd rather avoid. But risk doesn't always have to be life threatening. It can be as simple as putting yourself in an unfamiliar situation. Some people don't need to go out of their way to seek risk. If you live in Afghanistan, for instance, you're not in need of any extra uncertainty. But for those of us who are fortunate enough to live in places where our lives are relatively safe, I think if we challenged ourselves--even scared ourselves--once a day, we'd be better people. It helps to have that little jolt of perspective to remind you that life's fragile. The distinction between being courageous and being reckless is an important one. "Courageous" means you're able to calculate what you're doing. In my life I've taken calculated risks, as well as inadvertent risks. I've seen 18-foot-long tiger sharks in the water with me; I've been trapped under waterfalls. My mom was surprised that I made it to my 20th birthday. I guess it's the whole nine lives thing. There were a few close calls, but I'm still here. I've got a few of those nine lives left.DEALING WITH FEAR AND NEGATIVITYMAKE SURE YOUR WORST ENEMY DOESN'T LIVE BETWEEN YOUR OWN TWO EARS.FEAR: NOT TO BE FEARED Every so often, in an article or an interview, someone describes me as "fearless." In my opinion, that's like calling me an idiot. Fear is a natural response. Without it, we wouldn't survive. If you're never scared, then you've either never been hurt or you're completely ignorant. The idea that fear is something to deny is completely misguided.Forget your emotions around fear for a second and look at the simple reality: It's an energy source designed to increase performance. Adrenaline and the natural hormones your body creates when you're scared are more powerful than any drug. The ability to harness it constructively, that's the tricky part. Once you start to understand fear, it becomes something you can tap into. In my experience, fear usually prompts me to make really good decisions. I'd even go so far as to say that it gives me power. How do you use fear to empower yourself? You don't fight it, and you don't overanalyze it. Thinking too much about a frightening situation causes your mind to start chattering, and it gets in the way of your body.At Teahupoo, Tahiti, in 2000, I faced what has been, to date, the most dangerous situation of my career. I'd surfed this wave before, but never at the size it was that day--and neither had anybody else. The thing about Teahupoo is that it's a massively thick, deep, fast-moving barrel, and when it breaks it heaves so much water over the falls that it practically drains the reef. And the noise--you'd think it was a neutron bomb exploding. If you fall in the wrong conditions at Teahupoo, you're looking at a serious problem--possibly the last one you'll ever have. When I let go of the rope after being towed in, I knew that the wave I'd just caught was a monster. But a split second later, I realized that it was actually a two-headed monster, unlike anything I'd ever ridden. My mind tried every trick in the book to get me to doubt my ability to survive what everyone could see (and I instinctively knew, even though it was behind me) was a potentially fatal ride. But if I had listened to those panicked thoughts and jumped off that wave, I probably wouldn't be here to tell you not to let panic dictate your actions. If you think about it, the flip side of fear is commitment. You can spend your life fence-sitting because you're frightened of something bad that might happen--or you can launch yourself into it with all of your conviction and all of your intelligence. Here's my advice: Meet up with your fears. If you're afraid of sharks, go learn all about sharks. Get into the water with one. If you respect fear, face it straight on and act anyway. What you'll find isn't terror--it's exhilaration and the moments that you never forget.NEGATIVITY: WE ALL GET IT, BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN YOU HAVE TO TAKE IT Negativity is going to crop up in your mind. I think that's an unfortunate part of being human. It's as sure as daytime, nighttime. The question is: How much life do you give it? How dominant do you let it get? You have to make sure that the positive has more power and gets more time in your head than the negative. If you let that negative side take charge, you're going to find yourself in a hole.I can be as negative as anyone, but when it comes to what I'm doing in sports, that stuff is out. For instance, if I'm surfing and I start thinking about wiping out, that is getting pushed out of my brain. I'm consciously removing that thought; that's not something I'm giving any kind of life to. Mental discipline is key--and when it comes down to it, negativity is the easy way out. Quitting: easy. Daring to triumph: hard.DROPPING INGABBY REECEI think I'm a pretty good athlete. I mean a good athlete. But it's a humbling thing being with someone like Laird. There are the 1 percent athletes--the people who are at the top of the college sports scene; the ones who become pros. About 1 percent of talented athletes will make it that far. But then, every so often, you get a Tiger Woods. He's like the 1 percent of the 1 percent--a different breed. And Laird is in that group. I've been around a lot of pro athletes, and I'll watch him training and think, That's just a whole other existence going on over there. Being around someone with that talent, whether it's in sports or art or science or whatever--you don't get in the way of it. You've got to support it because it's unique. When we met, I knew exactly what Laird did for a living. As far as being nervous about it, I think I just accepted a long time ago that it's part of his destiny. You couldn't live with him if he wasn't doing it. It's all part of the deal. Over the years I've come to understand surfing and to appreciate how Laird approaches his sport. He has a lot of control and a lot of speed. His board is pushed into the wave rather than chattering across the face. Often he'll ride in a deeper position than other surfers, farther away from the shoulder, the wave's outside edge.Even though the situations he's in can be radical and powerful, there's something straightforward about his arena. Nature isn't as capricious as humans are. The ocean lets you know up front: "I'm dangerous. And I'm coming from the north." It's consistent that way. I'm not going to say there aren't days when I say, "Hey, could you just call me when you get in? Please just check in with me." Because you do have those days.Your mind has 100 percent power over your reality. Whatever you believe, that's what you are cultivating. So if you're hurt and you're funneling all your energy into thinking I'm getting better, I'm getting stronger--then that's what will happen. At the same time, if you're thinking Poor me. I'm wounded. I'm never going to be the same, then you will end up with the fruits of those seeds. If you're plagued by negative thoughts, here's a simple cure: Do something. If you think about it, negative thoughts are a luxury. They're a way to avoid getting down to work. We are each our own greatest inhibitors. We stop ourselves. The irony is that if you just get out of your own way, you'll do really well. And the sooner you face the work, the easier it'll be. The work will actually be the fun part.CULTIVATING INSTINCTSSMELL, SIGHT, HEARING, TASTE, TOUCH--DON'T FORGET YOUR SIXTH SENSE: ANIMAL INSTINCT. NOT ONLY IS IT REAL, IT CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE.No matter what it was--whether someone was bitten by a shark, fell off a cliff, or anything--I'll bet 95 percent of the time anyone who's had something bad happen to them had a feeling right before. That prickly feeling on the back of your neck that says, "That's a dangerous spot." It's an intuition we've developed as a species because it's been necessary for survival over millions of years. And yet animal instinct isn't something we pay much attention to on a day-in, day-out basis. To a large extent, modern life has removed the necessity of being on our toes. The average person loses a lot of those signals.I'm consciously aware of trying to cultivate my instincts. The less you react to them, the less you have them. They become numb. And I think most mistakes come when you don't pay attention to that inner knowledge. Ignore it and you end up going against your natural instincts. Learning to interpret what that sixth sense is telling you is as important as living and dying. I learned that the hard way.Three years ago, I was heli-snowboarding in the Caucasus Mountains in Russia, between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Little place called Sochi. I was with a group that included other snowboarders and some guides, and before we went out, we'd had this safety meeting about how to walk near cornices, which are always dangerous because they can collapse--and there's usually nothing beneath them but air. The guides stressed that if we saw stones (which can indicate an edge), we should always walk on the inside of them. But as we made our way along the steep traverse, the guides weren't doing that. I had a funny feeling, a sense something wasn't right, and I hollered at the guy in front of me. At the moment I yelled, I fell through a cornice, and due to nothing but luck, I landed on a rock shelf a few feet below. (Had that shelf not been there, I would have fallen 1,500 feet to my death.) And then I was thoroughly pissed. These guides were supposed to be getting me down safely. I was going down all right: the long way down, and the wrong way down. When we're not operating in life-or-death situations, a lot of times we tune out. If you're sitting behind a desk all day, you don't have to be hyperaware. But it's important to exercise your instincts like you would a muscle. If you don't try to tune in to every-thing--smell, hearing, sight, vibration--you can get dull, and that might come back to haunt you when it matters most. You can start by consciously turning your senses on. Be still, stay rooted in the present moment, and you'll start to become aware of all kinds of subtle things you hadn't noticed. Try to detect very faint smells. Or train your eyes to adjust more easily to the dark. The more you play with your senses, the more you're aware of them, the more you're in them. And the more you use them, the better you get.THE JOY OF BEING A BEGINNEROR, WHY IT'S GOOD TO BE BAD.In general, people don't want to try new things if they think they're going to be bad at them. The tendency is to say, "I haven't done that, I don't need to do that, I'm not good at that. You guys go on ahead."But the truth is, you have to be willing to subject yourself to failure, to be bad at something, to fall on your butt and do it again, and try stuff you've never done. That's the ideal mind-set in sports and in life--you have to be willing to have people laugh at you at first. Why? Because you need to keep challenging yourself. That's the whole idea behind seeking out things you're not good at: It forces your mind to engage. When you reach a certain level of proficiency in a sport or activity, your effort level is really diminished. Your body has adapted. For me personally, cross training--snowboarding, windsurfing, and mountain biking--keeps me physically and mentally sharp. Learning different sports always has a positive effect on my surfing. When you're a novice at something, it takes more focus and more concentration. When you've got something mastered, it takes a lot for you to have fun, but when you're new at something, you have fewer expectations, so it's easier. Trying something for the first time, you may think you've just been out fumbling around for a few hours. But in truth, you've worked your brain, your nervous system--your entire body--more than you know.

I have had Laird's book for almost two years now, and I constantly carry it with me in my backpack and take it out to read when I am unmotivated or need a mental charge up. It is one of the best books I've come across in terms of motivation and aspiring to live a positive active healthy life. Laird gives immensely wise information and tips regards diet, supplements, exercises and aiming for a healthy positive attitude, something that sorely missing from the majority of people in this day and age. Topics such as Dealing with fear & negativity, Being the best and striving for excellence, and elite-level athletic tips on training and recovery. Laird gives a list of great natural food ideas with the philosophy of "if I can't pronounce it or don't know what it is, it's not going into my body". I would highly, highly recommend this book for all young people trying to build character and better themselves. Easily one of my favorite non-fiction books along with Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court & Epictetus, The Art of Living: The Classic Manual on Virtue, Happiness, and Effectiveness.

Laird Hamilton has the best attitude about life. You don't have to be a surfer to read his book. I, personally, can't see any way that I can be as satisfied with life as he is and as he wants 'us' to be. I envy him & his family. I bought the book for my brother who adopted his boys after age 50 because "life was too simple". He is now a single dad of a 17 & 14 year old. He is 7 years older than me and is raising them as I grew up. We would be on a hike with our family and they would just leave me, knowing, back in the 60s that I was fine and the trails had a lot more solitude for miles than they do now. I would complain that my pack (which was supposed to be my weight, always) was too heavy or I was too tired or the mosquitos were eating me alive. They would say okay and off they'd go. I would play on the trail & find my elf friends (yes) in the tree roots for awhile, then catch up with them eventually. Usually they were at the destination already and having a picnic which was a great reward. All this to attempt to say that I feel Laird Hamilton is bringing up his family with a keen independence and appreciation for life. He says we should all scare ourselves at least once a day (to live to our fullest). Wow, I so agree, and am not there yet, but still appreciate the goal.

A friend recommended this book to me, and I'm ever so grateful that he did. This book is packed full of amazing gems and wisdom, and I just couldn't put it down! It is truly food for the mind, body and soul. What stood out initially, in the very beginning, is a quote by Mark Twain: "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones that you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." After reading this book, I realized that this whole book can be summed up by Mark Twain's quote, and Laird is a living example of that philosophy. The book is divided into four sections: Mind, Body, Soul & Surfing. Whether you are an athlete seeking to improve your performance in your particular sport, an average person interested in improving your health or someone on a spiritual and soul-searching path, this book has it all!!

The pictures, the nutrition info, and the inspiration that comes out of this book are fantastic! I keep it laying around on the living room coffee table and everyone loves flipping through it. It is well put together and does inspire you to keep eating and living healthy! I'm so glad I got this book - better than I thought it was going to be. RECOMMEND! Also, you might want to know that the brown cover of the book is the slip cover - underneath is the actual cover with the blue picture of the guy paddle surfing.

Love Laird, but this book is mediocre at best. No offense Laird, you rock!

Good to read an insiders view of all the water related sports, his personal experiences in the ocean, and views. It was quite obvious Lard is loaded, but he is so down to earth and humble.Being a surfer I did not know what to think of the stand up pattle boards, now I cannot wait to try one.Laird has cast iron balls, just pull up his exploits on you-tube

Enjoyed the book...An interesting read, for sure. It reminded me a little of an expanded Mens Journal or Outside magazine article or special edition by Laird, with some personal marketing thrown in for himslef and some friends, but so what? That's the way of the world, and this is an interesting, fun book, well worth worth the reading. This guy sets a good example for all men: Get off your ass and live. There ARE no excuses.

i bought this book because i am having frequent injuries. i am a 38 year old male, very active, but my body does not keep up. Lairds book gives you many tips on what to eat, supplements, how to protect yourself and most important how to recover fast and efficient.i totally recommend this to any person who wants to do active sports beyond the age of 30
