As a VISTA-phobe Mac switcher, no one did a better job than Pogue at making me feel at home with Leopard. He's done it again for Snow Leopard -- where eye candy was sparse, but getting the OS ready for the future was the driving force, as well as much needed updates of the standard apps to enhance performance. Outwardly, Snow Leopard is no avalanche, hence much of the book is an updated quality rewrite of the Leopard book; but where it counts -- as in describing the newly streamlined Automator -- the author maintains his outstanding track record of clarity and humor.Thinking it was little more than a cleverly promoted Leopard version update, I installed Snopard upon release ... what a mistake! Frequent failures in opening or closing files, inability to send mail and constant crash reports made me hold on to a reserve Leopard drive - if only to get the email out. Many (but hardly all) of these glitches were corrected by the 10.6.1 release; although importing and saving files with Adobe products remain daily crash report events [feels like a beta tester!]. No way was I going to let Snopard take over until I had it checked out by Pogue. As a measure of my confidence, Pogue gave me the lowdown (and the courage) to do a surprisingly simple 'Clean Install' of Snow Leopard after a 2-month wait, letting go of Leopard's security blanket, and allowing the (yet imperfect) beast to take over as the OS for my computer. The dauntingly-sized book may seem overwhelming at first, but the author has that rare gift of simplifying daily operations, yet provide all the detail that more advanced users demand. The chapter on Automation alone is worth the price of admission; with the drastic makeover of "ImageCapture", now serving as a frontend image collector within Automator, I would have been lost. Also, I feel reassured that some of the 'bugs' aren't Apple's so much as third party providers', and that Apple will address remaining incompatibilities with the Finder; moreover, as recommended, even with 8MB of RAM, the 32-bit kernel mode seems more stable than the 64-bit mode - at least for using non-Apple software.Overall, this book comes as close to being the definitve guide to Snow Leopard as can be -- both for newcomers and for oldtimers. Highly recommended!

Looked at the contents book was well written, then purchased the kindle version. Kindle version doesn't really include a table of contents, for whatever reason they rewrote the contents pages and now looks like it was written by a 5 year old.I contacted David Pogue, he wasn't aware of this, and submitted it to his publisher, who states that Kindle can make some changes, but why they would change the contents page which is the most important part of the book, is beyond me.So I just have to meander around to find things.David's great, his publisher was very nice to take the time to answer my e-mail. I just don't recommend the Kindle version right now, buy the full book, which is worth 5 stars, just not the Kindle Version, which was hacked together poorly.

I love the Missing Manual series by David Pogue and have been waiting for the release of this version. As with all of the Missing Manuals, this book is very well arranged and readable. You needn't be a complete techie to enjoy Pogue's writing style and the index and appendices are very helpful in locating exactly what you need.Snow Leopard brings about little tweaks in Apple's newest OS and this Missing Manual explores them. The changes are not large changes, but they are there. I sold my Leopard copy and upgraded my Mac and book to Snow Leopard. Do you need this copy of the missing manual if you already own David Pogue's Mac OS X Leopard: The Missing Manual? Probably not unless you really like to get underneath the hood. If you are starting afresh with the new OS version, this new copy is the way to go. If you own the Leopard version of Pogue's book already and you only use it for an occasional reference here and there, you will probably do just fine. All in all, dollars very well spent.

As a lifelong and very comfortable PC user, I purchased my first Mac with the popular misconception that it would be user friendly and intuitive. People told me not to worry, just do what seems logical and the Mac will respond. Right? Wrong. Very very wrong. Don't misunderstand me: I like my Mac, especially the big gorgeous monitor, the wireless mouse and keyboard, the ease of start-up, Garage Band, and lots of other stuff. But easy to use? Heck, there isn't even a backspace key! With the PC, my hand hardly ever reached for the mouse, and suddenly I was grabbing for it constantly. The Help menu wasn't very helpful, and the underlying set-up seemed mysterious and cumbersome. Finally a person who's smarter than I am suggested that I pick up a "Mac for dummies" type book. THE MISSING MANUAL is that book, and it is a blessing. I am finally discovering the universe that resides inside that snazzy monitor, learning to leave the mouse alone and having a great old time doing it. The book's subtitle is "the book that should have been in the box." I wholeheartedly agree. If you're a new Mac user, you need this book. It's well organized, clearly written, has a big fat index, and even provides web support. Thanks, David Pogue.

I actually received this book first and read it before the first Imaro book came. I wasn't confused at all by reading these books out of sequence and everything I said about the first Imaro book applies here, as well. I will not rehash the plot of the book in my review, but I will suggest to anyone who loves heroic Sword & Sorcery ( or Sword & Soul, as it were) to buy and read this book.

The beginning of this collection of excellent short stories begins just after the end of the first book. Imaro is in pursuit of the kidnapper of Tanisha when... well, that would be telling and I would not want to do that. The book is very well written and Charles Saunders love and affection for the characters and setting and the genre itself all shine through. He admits to editing and rewriting parts of the stories included in this book to make them fit the story arch that he had in mind., Having never read the original stories themselves I cannot compare the two. However in this book it works well and it really does form a effective and engaging story line.If you enjoy Sword and Sorcery fiction or even if you are looking for a fantasy story set in a mythical Africa then this book may be just what you are looking for.

Imaro 2 picks up where the first Imaro leaves off. Although the Imaro was written as separate stories, each adventure takes Imaro closer to discovering his purpose and his destiny. In this book we are introduced to Tanisha, a woman who becomes Imaro's companion; and Pomphis, an intelligent citizen of Cush who becomes one of Imaro's only friends. The adventures in Imaro 2 are just as exciting as Imaro 1 and they set the stage for the continuing adventures in Imaro 3. A must read for fans of Sword and Sword and Sword and Soul adventures.

I enjoyed this book. He forces you to try to remember names, places, people, etc. He helps the reader out by having a glossary for you. I highly recommend. However, I was not able to give it a five star for the following reasons:The cover was very provocative and caught my attention immediately. I love the fact the man and woman was undeniably African. However, I thought having them practically naked was over erotic and sexual. In the original Imaro II, they were respectfully clothed, with a hint of sensuality. The second issue I had with the current cover is a primary character, Pompous, was not included. Pompous was equally essential to this leg of the story, though he was featured on the original cover with Imaro and Tanisha.I read Imaro I, and was excited to finally get Imaro II. Saunders introduces early the pale men as the Mizungus. I was bothered because it seemed that these pale ones are out of place in ancient Nyumbani. I felt that Mr. Saunders was importing contemporary issues into a supposedly ancient story to appeal to a mainstream audience? I am reading this story because it is about ancient Africans. Yeah, yeah, I know all humans are Africans. Is there some historical evidence that would make such men in ancient Nyumbani reasonable and possible? There is a glaring inconsistency in the story. In Imaro I, Kitisa, Imaro's mama, brings him to her people's village when he is five rains. She wants him to be raised the Ilyssai way. She cannot stay and leaves him, never to seen by him again. Yet in Imaro II, on page 38, Katisa brings Imaro home as an infant and begs her father to let her stay with Imaro until he is 5 rains. I am baffled as to how such an inconsistency can get by him or his editor.I feel that the books needs better editing. I give this book a solid 4 star. I highly recommend.

Imaro is a great character.

this book picks up directly after the first book. imaro is now travelling with pomphis and tanisha. Expect to find... two headed monster people, fighting pits .........look get the book and read it. You won;t be disappointed

... to the land that Imaro roams! This is one of those books that actually pulls you in and makes you want to be exactly where Imaro and Tanisha are. It took me a little longer to read this book because I kept day-dreaming about the battles, the lands, the forests, and... well... Tanisha! Imaro gets into situations that seem impossible for him to get out of and the quiet warrior is a thrill to read.Like I said in my previous review of 'Imaro', I'm not a big fantasy fan but this story was good enough to keep my attention. Don't be like me and almost miss a GREAT story because this isn't your genre. Read this book NOW and you won't regret it. I loved this book and I'm loving this series! There isn't a date for book #3 yet but I hope it's soon!

In a day where Robert Jordan and Terry Brooks are passed off as great fantasy writing I just want the baser pleasures of great swords and sorcery. Weaned on Burroughs and Howard, Saunders is great. Thank you Night Shade Books for bringing him back into print.

Given I enjoyed that book, I was eager to read his What is Man? Adam, Alien, or Ape? Andrews has unique writing style in that he is able to take scientific and theological topics and weave in humor as well as personal antidotes. He has a wealth of experience and has the credentials that demonstrate he knows what he is talking about. What is Man? Adam, Alien, or Ape? discusses the “big” topics of the day such as contemporary research on the beginning of the universe, the multiverse, the millions of dollars spent on attempting to find if we are alone in the universe, the fine tuning argument, the fossil record, common descent, genetic research, as well as topics that are debated in Christian circles (i.e., The Historical Adam). It is obvious this book is targeted on the debates surrounding origins. After all, it is from this worldview question that everything flows from. Andrews cites plenty of research which includes both sides of the argument. He is fair in that he presents the issues of the current debate and cites people on both sides of these issues. The reader can purse further research by examining the footnotes with the sources. For me personally, I walked away from this book asking myself again why so many people assume many of these issues are settled. In other words, is the evidence for a multiverse so incredible that we just know we are one of many universes that got lucky? No, not really. Is the genetic evidence overwhelming for common descent? Not really! Has Lawrence Krauss showed we can get a universe from nothing? No! The list goes on. Given I do campus apologetics ministry, I would love to see this book go into the hands of college students. Note that Andrews doesn’t get into all the various creation models in this book. That’s fine with me. This book primarily deals with the science though it does weave together some theology as well. That’s fine with me.I enjoyed this book and highly recommended it to anyone and everyone!

I like Edgar. He quick witted, and writes in layman’s terms.

(Review written by Lydia McGrew)Edgar Andrews’s What is Man? Adam, Alien, or Ape is a charming survey of arguments for God’s existence and for the uniqueness of man. Andrews is an eminent British physicist, but he is not a dry academic. He has an impressive capacity for writing with humor and grace, using vivid extended metaphors. This permits even a non-scientist to follow his argument in scientific areas. For example, his use of a volcano with an endless supply of magma to explain the inflation multiverse theory was quite useful to me. His discussion of taxes (of all things) as characteristic of human society will stick with me for a long time as a challenge to attempts to blur the distinction between truly sapient societies and the social interactions of apes. His chapter titles alone (e.g., “The Cheshire Cat Cosmos,” “Small Flat Bugs,” “Aristotle and the Snowball”) succeed in interesting the reader and keeping one going through the book, curious to see what he will say under those headings. One small area of disagreement concerning physics arises from Andrews’s apparent idea that a multiverse in which the laws and constants vary randomly is not possible, since this would make our own universe incomprehensible. I do not see how this conclusion follows but find it interesting that a physicist thinks that our own laws must be in some strong sense necessary in order for scientific investigation of them to be possible. The book covers a wide range of material, from the origins of the entire universe to biological evolution to the historical evidence for Christianity. As a writer myself, I found it striking that for the most part I did not find it either cramped or rushed. Despite the tremendous amount of material that he has decided to touch on, Andrews has hit a good balance between “not enough” and “too much” coverage of the details. Andrews’s command of a huge range of information is also noteworthy. I was especially struck by his knowledge of genetic and other evidential challenges to Darwinian evolution, though he is a physicist, and by his ability to explain these clearly. In the area of philosophy, I was quite pleased to see Andrews defend the unpopular position of dualism, using the charming extended metaphor of an inhabitant in a house. He humorously imagines various materialist realtors who try to tell the incredulous tenant of the house that he does not exist. Via this metaphor, he explained his opposition to materialism of various sorts, including “emergence” views, and even Aristotelian hylemorphism, which some Christians find an attractive alternative to materialism. On this point I strongly agree with Andrews that hylemorphism is philosophically wrong. He also is rightly unfazed by the question, “How can mind interact with matter?” My one quibble about this section of the book is that Andrews definitely argues for interactive substance dualism, yet in a later chapter on worldviews he seems briefly to endorse Berkeleyan idealism. These two views are not compatible. Berkeley certainly rejected materialism, but he argued against mind-independent physical reality.Andrews is to be commended as well for his staunch (and detailed) defense of the uniqueness of man, in line with the title of the book, and his rejection of theistic evolutionary scenarios according to which God worked invisibly to bring man into existence by what appeared to be purely natural descent from ape-like ancestors. Andrews rightly argues both that no such conclusion is supported by the biological evidence and that such a conclusion is at odds with the anthropology taught by Christian doctrine and essential to man’s unique dignity. In these chapters it is interesting to see how Andrews simply does not say what his own position is concerning the age of the earth. He manages to write in a way that does not seem evasive on this issue, since he is so straightforwardly addressing many other controversial matters (like the supposed evolution of man, the historicity of a strongly literal Adam, and the historical Fall of man). Still, one is naturally curious about what he thinks of an issue that is so controversial within the Christian community.Andrews’s chapter on the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus is necessarily brief. Since this is one of my own areas of specialty, it is perhaps not surprising that I would have liked to see a slightly longer treatment with citation of an even wider range of material. At the same time, I am struck positively by the way that Andrews does not confine himself merely to the popular, but in my opinion insufficient, “minimal facts” argument for the resurrection. He expressly says that it is important to use the New Testament documents as historical evidence, and he carefully explains that this is not circular, since we investigate these documents in other ways and find that circumstantial evidence supports their accuracy. He begins this chapter with a quotation from the 19th-century thinker Thomas Arnold, which states that the resurrection is supported by strong evidence “of every sort.” Both the decision to quote a 19th-century writer and the robust evidentialism are tacit counters to the more minimalist approach that is too often taken among Christian apologists. In his summary of the evidence for the resurrection, Andrews refers without apology to the diversity of the accounts as a strength (arguing for their independence) and to the detailed testimonies of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus and of those who claimed to have eaten with Jesus at the Sea of Galilee. This sort of information is what we need to be talking about when we defend this central claim of Christianity.Andrews footnotes at the end of his discussion of the resurrection the work of Gary Habermas, which does tend to confine itself mostly to what is “agreed upon by the vast majority of scholars.” This is more limiting than the data set that Andrews is alluding to. Discussion of the wider range of data (Amazon does not allow links in reviews) to which Andrews himself alludes can be found in Timothy and Lydia McGrew, “A Cumulative Case for the Resurrection of Jesus Nazareth,” available in pre-print form through lydiamcgrew.com and found in final form in the Blackwell Companion to Natural Theology, and “Minimal Facts vs. Maximal Data,” a fairly recent webinar by Lydia McGrew given to the Apologetics Academy (available on the webinars page at lydiamcgrew.com). But once again, this is not intended as a major criticism of Andrews. If anything, his staunch and unselfconscious reference to the Gospels’ resurrection accounts as historical sources is the most important facet of his discussion of the resurrection.Andrews is unabashedly attempting to interest his readers in Christianity for the sake of eternity, yet he carries out this apologetic task with objectivity, erudition, and a light touch.I recommend this charming book both for laymen and scholars interested in the vital question, “What is man?”(I received a paperback copy of this book at a conference. A positive review was not required in return for the copy. I have read this entire book before reviewing.)

From the Inside Flap

Bonus - Includes Part II Often disguised as something that would help him, evil accompanies Christian on his journey to the Celestial City. As you walk with him, you'll begin to identify today's many religious pitfalls. These are presented by men such as Pliable, who turns back at the Slough of Despond; and Ignorance, who believes he's a true follower of Christ when he's really only trusting in himself. Each character represented in this allegory is intentionally and profoundly accurate in its depiction of what we see all around us, and unfortunately, what we too often see in ourselves. But while Christian is injured and nearly killed, he eventually prevails to the end. So can you. The best part of this book is the Bible verses added to the text. The original Pilgrim's Progress listed the Bible verse references, but the verses themselves are so impactful when tied to the scenes in this allegory, that they are now included within the text of this book. The text is tweaked just enough to make it readable today, for the young and the old. Youngsters in particular will be drawn to the original illustrations included in this wonderful classic.

I have been reading on this book for a very long time. It has worked well for me to read a few pages daily. I suggest this if you want to stay with the project. It is a readable, fascinating book, first published in 1678. This version has been updated and made more easily read, and it takes away nothing from the narrative. Christian leaves his family and the City of Destruction in search of Mt Zion and glory. Wow, he has a HARD time but he makes it. Christian's wife, children and a companion decide to follow him. This has been a long struggle for me too. I am so gladto get most of the travelers to their destination and I to mine----The End.

I love this book, it is a classic and well worth the read whether you consider yourself a "christian" or not, so when I saw this version for 99¢, including the audio narration, I was thrilled and purchased it right away. Then I started to read it, in the prologue there is a note from some priest who has taken it upon himself to pare down the book by removing all of the "sermons" that he believes slow the story down. While that is fine for some people who may prefer this pared down version, it should be advertised up front as "abridged", which it is not. Had I known I was getting a much less meaningful version of the book, I would never have purchased it, which is why I rated it as 1 star.

Pilgrim's Progress is a classic that is just as powerful today as it was when it was first written in 1678. If you are like me though, you have struggled with the reading of this beloved book. The way we speak now has changed a lot through the years and sometimes picking up a book from a different time period can be challenging to read.I am excited to tell you about the new publication of Pilgrim's Progress. It is updated, in Modern English, but still has the original illustrations. This made such a huge difference for me. What an enjoyable read it was! I did find myself, especially at the beginning, comparing it to the original text. I wanted to see for myself how much it was changed and amazingly, very little. It's tweaked just enough to make it easy to read for today's readers.Another very unique feature about this new publication is the Bible verses that are added to the text. I'm not talking about just a Bible reference either. Entire verses including where they are found in the Bible are throughout the whole book. For example:In my dream, I saw a man clothed with rags standing in a certain place, with his face turned from his own house. In his hand he held a book, and he bore a great burden upon his back. (For my iniquities are gone over my head; as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. -Psalm 38:4)This was such an amazing aspect for me. It enriched the reading in such a spiritual way. I applaud whoever came up with the idea to do this. I'm sure it took a lot of work and study, but it was well worth it.Pilgrim's Progress is not a quick read. It is something to be savored. To be meditated upon. I found myself reading some of the lines/paragraphs more than once. Then I would sit and close my eyes and think on it. If you allow it, it can speak volumes to your heart. What an encouragement for the Child of God! I would highly recommend reading this account of Pilgrim's Progress and feel your life will be enriched deeply in doing so.***This book was provided to me by Aneko Press in exchange for my honest review.

This is a great story with a picture on every page! It is an allegorical story following the character named Christian. Christian meets lots of people along his way to try to get rid of the burden on his back representing his sin. He cannot remove the burden on his own. Some people lead him astray and some people point him back to the right path towards Jesus and Salvation. Christian eventually reaches the cross and gives his life to Jesus. Jesus forgives his sins and the burden falls off his back into a bottomless pit and he is made new with a new identity in Christ! That is only the beginning of the story however and Christian goes on to learn what it means to live a life for God. He also eventually equips himself with the armor of God. It's a great story and one I recommend to every parent with young children! When my mother read this to me at 4 years old I gave my heart to Jesus. When Christian reached the cross I told my mom, "Mommy I want to give my burden to jesus too!" I pray this story will continue to share the gospel with many more people for years to come!

This is one of the better versions of the Pilgrim's Progress. The version is written in clear modern language. The Bible Verses are conveniently located so one can easily read and compare them to the way John Bunyan uses them in the story. (The Bible verses are actually written out not just marked) I have several versions of the Pilgrim's Progress, so I have read this story over and over many times. I would highly recommend this version and the one written by Barry Horner. Both of the books have their advantages. If you have read this story before and you really didn't get anything out of it, I would suggest you buying this version and trying it again. I have gained different insights with each and every reading.
