This was a valiant attempt by a very good historian to write a parallel biography of two historic adversaries. However it was painfully obvious that the source information was quite unparallel. This was particularly obvious in the early lives of the two subjects. While there was some information about the early life of Custer, all the author could do about the early life of Crazy Horse was to discuss how his life "probably" occurred. And as the book progressed, it became obvious that this was an effort to use earlier research about West Point Military Academy to publish another book. I enjoy reading Ambrose, and I looked forward to reading this one, but it was disappointing.Reading this, I learned a lot about Custer, but I do not feel that I learned much detail about Crazy Horse.

This should have 10 stars. I an 83 yr. old that has read over a thousand books since I got an adult library card at age 6. I have had to slow down my reading because of eye trouble, but the ability of the paperwhite to increase font size had helped me keep my speed up. But this book is the best thing I come across in years. I was born in upper Minnesota and spent time on the Sioux reservation. I've also read some things about Custer and The Little Big Horn. All were weak in early detail and the culture. This book delves deeply into BOTH the lives of Custer and Crazy Horse.and their opposite cultures. For anyone interested in the early West and the lives of the Indian tribes as opposed to the upbringing of Custer will find it all here.

Another one of those riveting, story like history books that Stephen E. Ambrose seems to put out effortlessly."Crazy Horse and Custer..." is an excellent, well rounded book that takes a topic that is very tender in American History, and presents both sides of the issue, allowing the reader to form their own viewpoint on the Native American's history in the northern Plains. On one side, there is Custer: the ambitious, romantic, and magnetic soldier that in a way is the perfect picture a young, forward thinking America. On the other, there is the calm, powerful Crazy Horse, who embodies everything we love about the noble Plains Indians--fierce, humble, kind, and simply taking life in stride, but like a coiled spring, ready to defend intruders who would disrupt their way of life.Ambrose takes these two, and does a wonderful job explaining how their society made them. Custer comes from a progress driven, hard working society that is the individualistic personae working together for a common goal--but always working, always moving forward, learning from the past to apply it to the future. Crazy Horse comes from the society that has seen it all. and is content with how it worked out for them. They take what they need, and let it go at that. They live as a giant family of independents who are content to reflect on the past, and bring it to the present. It is a gripping tale of blundering West Pointers, undisciplined Sioux war parties, and most of all, brave fighters, on both sides, pitted against one another in a battle for the Plains.

Of course, we all know some of the story of these two men. However, this book really fills in the blanks! Two totally different cultures but two fighting men with two different reasons to be fighting. I have always thought the Indians really were mistreated by the government and this account certainly agrees with my thinking. For some reason, white people did not think of the Indians as "human" which is unthinkable since they definitely were human - just with a totally different culture. They were hunters and gatherers who knew nothing about farming but that is what our government wanted them to do. The Indians were forced to give up everything - their culture, their way of life, the land they lived on because settlers kept moving west and our government did nothing to protect anything the Indians had. There is no wonder that the massacre at Little Bighorn happened. In fact, it was inevitable. If you have never been to the Custer Battlefield National Monument, you should go to see where it all happened. It is a truly remarkable site!I must add that I really liked the way Mr. Ambrose finished this book with "what happened to most of the main characters ". That alone gave closure to what happened to each person. I truly loved this book.

This is one of the longest books I've ever read. Because of my working life I shy away from long books because I of hectic schedules and reading times. But this book really captured my interest. Yes we all kind of know the story and yes we all know the outcome, but the back story of two completely different men is fascinating. You have George Custer a graduate of West Point and Crazy Horse who went to the School of Hard Knocks, but became a masterful military tactician as he matured. If you like history of the old west and want to learn of the plight of the Indian tribes getting pushed farther west for the white mans settlement and profits you'll like this book. Plus the author parallels the lives of Custer and Crazy horse from childhood to death in a well documented manner.

My brother has talked to me about this book for so many years, I finally decided to read it. I have experience with Native Americans, my brother with the Military . . . so he was particularly interested in hearing my impressions. I'm a bit more than half way through the book now. At first I had a tough time because Ambrose writes with a heavy hand . . . though it is obvious he has researched the subject matter to the nth degree, it's just difficult for me to read. He started to grab my attention when he was discussing the very interesting differences between Whites and Indians. His descriptions of Crazy Horse and the tribes with which he was affiliated were nothing short of fascinating. There is such detail about why and how they did what they did, you come away with a truly intimate view. Likewise, Custer's overwhelming, cloying arrogance is keenly proven throughout his entire life. We all know what happens in the end, but the phenomenal turns of events leading up to it are well worth your history-loving efforts.

My teenage grandson suffers with anxiety, since his mother (my daughter), took her life 4 years ago. He said that the workbook helped a little, and that it was okay. He said some parts were good, and others didn't help at all. At least he took the time to use it! That says a lot! Thank you.

This series of teen workbooks is one of the most valuable resources I have found for counseling my at risk teenage students! I purchased the anxiety, anger, self esteem and overcoming negative feelings handbooks and I was honestly nervous. So many of the tools avaliable to address teen needs are dated and are taken as nothing but a joke by those they are designed to help. My 6th-12th graders happily and often eagerly engage in the questionnaires and activities in these books! They also have told me that they feel like they really do help. That in and of itself is worth it to me!

If you have a teenager who suffers from excessive anxiety, this is the best book out there. As a parent and as someone with a degree in Clinical Psychology, this earns my seal of approval. It's simple to use, but backed by the science.

I am a therapist who was looking for a good workbook w/ tools to help w/ anxiety for my adolescent population. Although this workbook has some good materials it seems to be more appropriate for preteen or younger teens. Which is still helpful for me. For parents looking for a good workbook I would recommend this book for kids 11 through 14 or 15. Older than that I would look into books geared toward adults, as I think older teens would find this book immature.

Bought for my granddaughter who has Aspergers and some health issues cropping up. She says she likes it a lot, that it helps

Great anxiety reducing workbook with a lot great skills that work. Good for teens and parents.

Worst book ever. This book causes/creates anxiety. It's nothing but a big notebook. Barely any information just 200 pages to write your v feelings. The activities on EVERY page are super stressful. Im throwing this book in the trash. It's useless

Well written and easy to work through.

This pamphlet is short and includes pretty common information. For the absolute beginner to incense, it provides a bit of knowledge and history, but the basic information on making your own incense is, for me, less-than-satisfactory in that it's too basic. I wanted to know about combining scents, creating other types of incense besides plain soaked joss sticks, and the like. I didn't find that here.

Yes! Don't be fooled by this book's humble looks, it is unending useful and informative. Sure you won't have lots of colorful pictures but they aren't necessary and the price is great because it doesn't have a ton of stuff you don't need but everything you do. Looking to start making incense- start here!

Concise and informative. I wanted to know more about what various options would bring to an incense blend and this delivered. I'll refer to it often.

Good introduction booklet with short and fulfilled explanations. some recipes included. wish it can be more detailed and wider in examples with ingredients. Overall best simple guide for beginners.

Good recipes, but should always find substitution for saltpeter.

The information was very rudimentary ... borrow this from your public library if want the very basic information (or read it there .. there not much to it).

Just started going through this book, but I am glad I bought it. I am new to the incense world, but I would love to make my own blends.

Great tips!

Amazon.com Review

London, 1936. Gordon Comstock has declared war on the money god; and Gordon is losing the war. Nearly 30 and "rather moth-eaten already," a poet whose one small book of verse has fallen "flatter than any pancake," Gordon has given up a "good" job and gone to work in a bookshop at half his former salary. Always broke, but too proud to accept charity, he rarely sees his few friends and cannot get the virginal Rosemary to bed because (or so he believes), "If you have no money ... women won't love you." On the windowsill of Gordon's shabby rooming-house room is a sickly but unkillable aspidistra--a plant he abhors as the banner of the sort of "mingy, lower-middle-class decency" he is fleeing in his downward flight. In Keep the Aspidistra Flying, George Orwell has created a darkly compassionate satire to which anyone who has ever been oppressed by the lack of brass, or by the need to make it, will all too easily relate. He etches the ugly insanity of what Gordon calls "the money-world" in unflinching detail, but the satire has a second edge, too, and Gordon himself is scarcely heroic. In the course of his misadventures, we become grindingly aware that his radical solution to the problem of the money-world is no solution at all--that in his desperate reaction against a monstrous system, he has become something of a monster himself. Orwell keeps both of his edges sharp to the very end--a "happy" ending that poses tough questions about just how happy it really is. That the book itself is not sour, but constantly fresh and frequently funny, is the result of Orwell's steady, unsentimental attention to the telling detail; his dry, quiet humor; his fascination with both the follies and the excellences of his characters; and his courageous refusal to embrace the comforts of any easy answer. --Daniel Hintzsche

This book was not at all what I expected from G.O. I did love this book though. Fabulously descriptive and totally takes the reader to 1930s London. Gordon is not a very likable character, yet you are almost forced to like him. He is such a victim of circumstances and yet above all a "gentleman". This was set during a time of definite distinction in class. He is extremely poor but comes from a good family and is well read and fancies himself a poet. I really "got" Gordon and could understand exactly where he was coming from. His close friend and long suffering girlfriend never gave up on him. Loved these characters, and loved this book!!

Haven't read this in a while. Gordon gets a bit redundant. He is a socialist living in a capitalist's world. Complains about not having anything, but refuses to compromise his own values. We meet some interesting characters along the way. His love life is mysterious. He is friends with the very thing he hates. I think the story illustrates the fate of our starving artists relatively well.

After recently reading the 4 volume set of the essays, plus Coming Up for Air, which I found in my shelf unread, I had thought that the Aspidistra would be the closing session on Orwell for me. I thought I had covered the field. Unfortunately and surprisingly, the aspidistra are so fresh and enjoyable, despite their sordid subject, that I find myself under compulsive pressure to order the books that I have not read yet (the Clergyman's Daughter, the Road to Wigan Pier, Down and Out in Paris and London). As much as I like to look at plants, assuming they grow wild or they are cultivated by somebody else, I am no gardener nor botanist. I honestly did not know what an aspidistra is. I looked it up in the Langenscheid's Dictionary English - German. I learned that an aspidistra is an Aspidistra. Aha. Google Images teach me that the thing is a somewhat non-descript and somewhat unkempt pot plant. It seems to like growing in places that no self-respecting plant ought to survive. Orwell's novel has them as a symbol for undestructability under nasty circumstances. For the novel's hero Gordon Comstock, they are the enemy. They are allied with the oppressors, the seedy boarding houses and lower middle class dwellings that he loathes so much. They symbolize the lack of money; money rules, specifically when you don't have any.The twist of the 'plot' is that Gordon chose to be poorer than he needed to be, by throwing away 'good jobs' in the money making world. We have here a study in the pretensions of poverty. The most brillant parts of this amazing novel have us watch confrontations, or should I say Pas-de-Deux, of different social strata. Gordon tries to hide and is ashamed of his poverty, while his friend Ravelston is trying to hide and is ashamed of his wealth. The rich man is the socialist, who tries and tries to convince the poor man of the merits of socialism. Gordon can't be bothered, he doesn't have enough money to be a socialist. The novel is far exceeding my expectations and I may have to think again about my classification of Orwell as mainly an essayist.

E-books that are riddled with errors should be sold as damaged goods, in much the same way that clothing with flaws in manufacture are sold as "irregular", that is, at a substantial discount. $1.99 would be about right for this travesty, not the $10 I paid.Make no mistake: this is superlative fiction. Orwell is among the giants of fiction in modern English, and this novel is but one proof of it. All the more unfortunate that the text should have been slaughtered in this way - presumably by OCR errors. The program used sees the "rn" sequence as the letter m, thus we have diners at a "comer" table. Instead of "he had torn it" we get "he had tom it". The cl combination is interpreted as "d", and so Uncle Walter becomes "Unde Walter", and when one wants to clear out of a place he "dears out", and so on. Periods are left out in places, so that sentences run on. Dreadful. Amazon, why did you take ten dollars from me for this? If you don't want to edit or correct errors, simply warn the customer that s/he is buying something flawed or substandard, and sell it at an appropriate price.More frustrating was the fact that I could not stop reading, reconstructing Orwell's elegant, seamless English sentences as I was able, and not knowing the extent of the damage to the text until I was well into the story. I suggest you find a better electronic presentation of this or buy a hard copy.
