There's good information in here, but it's an ultimately shallow experience. It's nice to see the codification of these distributed system design patterns into diagrams and names, but the book mostly seems like Kubernetes promotional material. The book relies so heavily on Kubernetes' config boilerplate to pad its content it's surprising that Kubernetes is not mentioned anywhere in the title. In addition to describing design patterns, this book is pretty rigorous in its adherence to its own simple pattern: Introduce a design pattern with a name and a diagram, describe it briefly, give examples of its practical application with accompanying Kubernetes configurations. Would have liked to see more discussion of the evolution of these patterns along with some case studies. Works OK as a practical companion piece to Kleppmann's Designing Data-Intensive Applications, but at the same MSRP, either this is overpriced or DDIA is a steal. If you have to choose one of them at $44.99, Kleppmann should be your first choice, hands down.

Went over couple of chapters so far. I will start by reviewing it 4. If you are an experienced developer then most of these patterns you have already applied at some point. The book goes over explaining them nicely with practical scenarios. A figure for EACH scenario would have been nice though.However, like other reviewers mentioned the author should not have adopted to using Kubernetes without mentioning it in pre-req. Examples don't provide much value this way. I have read "The Kubernetes Book" by Nigel so was able to understand concepts such as Pod and YAML syntax. The book could have been written keeping the container/micro-service orchestration abstract.

I’ve joked over the last year that Kubernetes is going to translate my 20 years of hard-earned distributed systems experience into a few yaml files.This book is the beginning of that process. This book outlines the major patterns used in the design of large scale, heterogenous applications in simple, digestible terms. It gives a common language for us all to use as we build systems in the future. While there is still much room for implementation and execution, this book covers the major patterns I’ve seen in both online processing and batch.This book won’t solve whether or not you should build your system as distributed microservices or a monolith, but it will help you design your services once you’ve decided you need them.

Very superficial. Describes a few ways to build some simple distributed applications without discussing the fundamental aspects and tradeoffs of those systems. Most of the information is easily available anywhere on the Internet. If you're looking for a good book on designing distributed systems, don't buy this book. Instead buy the Martin Kleppmann book "Designing Data Intensive Applications".

If you're looking for an application manual for distributed systems, this is the book for you.All you theory-heads, read this first, then split off into the topics that interest you the most.

I loved the author's brevity in order to stay focused on the larger patterns found in distributed systems. This book is heavily tilted to the Kubernetes engineer, but that's EXACTLY what I wanted. I still love paper books and having a lightweight copy I can take almost anywhere, but with material that is anything but lightweight give me the best value of all. Thanks Brendan Burns - awesome job!

Great use of mix language examples to compliment the explanations while not going too deep into the actual codification of such patterns. I love this book! I usually don't write reviews for books but this book deserves praise. The book is an easy read with difficult content. This book offers solutions to problems adult children may face. It's practical. It's current. It's just a really really good book about ACOA andThis book offers hope. It also offers suggestions on how to turn character defects into assets.I cannot recommend this book enough!!

Aside from a handful of harsh remarks which are meant to be jokes, this self help book is incredible. Well written, psychoeducational, transformative, inspiring. I loved learning about Erik Erikson's stages of life, family dynamics and roles, the lists, reading the stories. Definately worth the read!

This book was the one thing that changed my life. And I had tried almost everything, for decades. This book freed me from the prison I'd been born into. It set me off on the discovery of things as they truly are, which I had never even suspected. Especially recommended for people with NLD or Asperger's, as a guide to what is not being said.

I gave this 5 stars because I think depending on what you are working on, it could be. It wasn't as helpful to me. I was hoping for something that would tell me more about what "normal" people do because I know that I learned some odd ways of thinking and behaving when I was growing up. It did help somewhat in this, but I think the title is slightly misleading.I recommend this as one of the first books to read if you believe that there might have been something dysfunctional about the way you were raised but you are not sure what or you're just starting your exploration of those issues. It's not a "parent bashing" book, but instead a kind and compassionate book on how to get better, not blame.Chapter 19 about perfectionism resonated with me and gave some nice tips on how to deal with it. Unfortunately, that entire chapter is just two pages long, so it's not worth buying the whole book just for that.It's an easy read and well written, so if you're on the fence, buy it. I think you'll get something valuable out of it.

The book arrived in great shape and fast. I would buy from this seller again. I love this book. I use this with my sponsee's. It's very 'easy' to read, no big words to look up. However, the concepts are sometimes hard to read, but so important to change for the better. I have been using this book for years and have a lot a success with it, combined with the other pieces used in recovery.

I purchased this for a friend after reading it years ago. It’s definitely meant to keep and refer to whenever it is needed! Easy read and gives you answers for everyday situations.

if you grew up in a messed up home, read this. read it before you have kids of your own. one of the more helpful self help books I have read. I like a book that just tells you what to do , or explains why you do the things you do..... I will be passing this one around.

Whoever said it was too cookbook hasn't appreciated the the value of having a thorough one at hand. I loved the Friel's approach. It is a bit harder on the ego than the Woititz ACOA book but this one includes ALL dysfunctions, and I know even after years in recovery I will still find valuable resources in this book to guide me along my bumpy journey. As one who has NO idea what is normal, yet somehow manages to function at the basic level in society, I definitely appreciated the simple yet thorough approach used here.This book isn't another "blame the parents--give you an excuse" soother. It requires that we take responsibility for our adult lives, recovery, happiness, misery, relationships, dysfunctional patterns & our future. This book shows me exactly what healthy (they don't believe in the statistical normal, to them normal means emotionally healthy, which is a far more useful definition of the ambiguous term "normal" anyway) living means, looks-smells-tastes-feels like! I can use this book as a check-up to see if I'm on the right track and if not, follow the suggestions or get further help.Most of all this book helped me to recognize that recovery isn't an overnight process, can't be done alone in isolation, that I'm human and mistakes are actually a GOOD and WELCOME experience and do NOT have anything whatsoever to do with my self-worth. This book even includes several chapters on how to respond to con artists, abusers & generally rude, mean or unhealthy people. How to deal with zingers, how to set healthy boundaries & protect ourselves & our healthy boundaries, I could go on for pages praising this book.I've bought numerous other self-help books & this one was the best. The authors do suggest waiting until one has 2+ years of recovery before tackling this book. To hell with that. Read it now, and every step of the way on your journey. Start feeling better about YOU & your life right NOW, today. Good luck on your journey, happy discoveries to you.

About the Author

Edmund P. Clowney (1917-2005) received his B.A. from Wheaton College in 1939, a Th.B. from Westminster Theological Seminary in 1942, an S.T.M. from Yale University Divinity School in 1944 and a D.D. from Wheaton College in 1966. Ordained in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, he served as pastor of several churches from 1942 to 1946 and was then invited to become assistant professor of practical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in 1952. He became that institution's first president in 1966, and he remained there until 1984, when he took a post as theologian-in-residence at Trinity Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Charlottesville, Virginia. In 1990, Clowney moved to Escondido, California, where he served as adjunct professor at Westminster Seminary California. In 2001, he took a full-time position as associate pastor at Christ the King Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Houston, Texas. After two years, he returned to Charlottesville, where he resumed part-time the post of theologian-in-residence at Trinity Presbyterian Church. He remained in this role until his death. Clowney was instrumental in the birth or growth of such ministries as the Reformed Theological Seminary in Aix-en-Provence, France; Westminster Seminary California; Trinity Church, Charlottesville; the Lausanne Conference; InterVarsity ministries, both in the United States and in England; and "The Westminster Ministerial Institute," an inner-city training program for pastors in Philadelphia, out of which was grown the Center for Urban Theological Studies. Clowney is remembered by many as a preacher, perhaps the most gifted proponent and practitioner of redemptive-historical preaching of this generation. His writing also displays the great theme of his life, namely Christ's presence in the whole of Scripture and his present work in the church. His books include Preaching and Biblical Theology, Called to the Ministry, Christian Meditation, Doctrine and the Church, The Message of 1 Peter, The Unfolding Mystery and Preaching Christ in All of Scripture. Edmund Clowney's commentary makes it easy to grasp the meaning of 1 Peter. I have received very meaningful teaching material from his writing. He is not consumed with what other writers say about 1 Peter. Straight talk.

As is his trademark, Dr. Clowney presents a very Biblical-Theological approach to this "commentary". It was a very informative, devotional read in most places with some of the traditional commentary exegesis inserted in places. I would recommend this for use as the text for a small group study but not as supplemental material for a broader study of 1 Peter.

Edmund Clowney is both theologically astute and extremely quotable. This is a fine treatment of a powerful Epistle. He handles the text with exegetical precision and applies it to the reader's life. This is no the most in-depth study of 1 Peter out there (as his preface lets the reader know from the beginning), but preachers and laymen alike will benefit from reading it.

Dr. Clowney wrote a pastoral view of 1 Peter. It helps the lay person understand that Christ identifies and defines who we are; we are ‘elect exiles’. When we believe Jesus Christ, the Son God who is God, accomplished the Righteousness the Law required in our place, we are saved to a live and to suffer according to the Cross of Christ.

This was an excellent introductory commentary by a respected seminary teacher and scholar. His prose is economical -- which I like. It endorses a classically Reformed perspective on soteriology (which also comports with my own).

Not overly in depth but very readable. The author has some really good application points that I have worked into my messages.

It is excellent and is an outstanding commentary on the book of I Peter. It differs from many commentaries in that it reads like a narrative rather than its being a passage-by-passage explanation or interpretation.

Excellent book.

Ms. Low-Kramen is a passionate spokesperson on issues concerning professional assistants and enjoys setting the record straight. As a result, she has been quoted in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, USA Today, NY Post, and Vanity Fair, and interviewed on Entertainment Tonight and Good Day New York among others. She is a guest speaker at assistant conferences in throughout the US, Canada and the UK. Ms. Low-Kramen worked to create NYCA in 1996 with seven fellow celebrity assistants. It is the only organization of it s kind on the East Coast. In 2003, she was honored by her peers for career achievement at a ceremony in Beverly Hills. Ms. Low-Kramen's work with Olympia Dukakis has included close involvement with the Academy Award win for Moonstruck, the 1988 presidential campaign of Michael Dukakis, travel around the world to places such as Sydney, London, Alaska and Prague and numerous awards shows and benefits. A New Jersey native, Ms. Low-Kramen holds a B.A. degree from Rutgers University in English and Theatre. After working with the same wonderful CEO for fourteen years, my EA role evolved into an Office Manager position partnering with many chiefs, and I wanted to ensure that my skills and perspective developed with the role. A colleague recommended The Ultimate Assistant to me and as my future dream job is to be a PA in private industry, I figured I’d be gaining insight into both worlds by reading this book.I am so glad I did! Not only did it provide the renewed perspective I needed to be the best EA I can be (still learning!), but it is full of tips and examples that I will refer to in the future. I bought Ms. Low-Kramen's book after being drawn to her solid advice to assistants on LinkedIn forums. I was not disappointed. "Be The Ultimate Assistant" is a must-have guide for all celebrity assistants, but especially for those who are aspiring to the role. The book includes enjoyable, amusing and eye-opening stories that provide instructive lessons for those who work - or wish to work - for the famous, wealthy and powerful; it is those stories that make this book a page-turner. They reveal not only clear strategies in dealing with the larger-than-life employer but also contain personal accounts of how Ms. Low-Kramen came to work for Academy Award-winning actress Olympia Dukakis and her husband, actor Louis Zorich, and their warm and enduring relationship. Woven among these enlightening and delightful stories are sound strategies, techniques and resources for celebrity assistants. The book also addresses what it takes to be a celebrity assistant, how to go about landing a position and the unique challenges and hard truths of which anyone embarking on such a career should be aware. Included are tips that any assistant working for a celebrity or other high-powered employer will find helpful; but, it also addresses how to handle extreme situations like replacing a passport overnight, obtaining a police escort and delaying a commercial flight! "We...do whatever it takes to get our jobs done," says Ms. Low-Kramen in the book's introduction. She even includes guidelines for employers who wish to hire - and keep - a celebrity assistant; this is important, as the role of celebrity assistant, while it can be glamorous and exciting, is an especially rigorous and demanding one and employers need to know how to work optimally with their assistants. I have recently transitioned into the role of personal assistant and was excited to come across this book in my search for professional development materials. Bonnie Low-Kramen does an excellent job blending her personal story with practical advice for people in the field. I now have a long list of ideas to try in my new role. This will be very helpful to me in planning my day and making sure that I am spending my time in a way that my employer finds beneficial. As an Office Manager and Personal Assistant to the Principals of my company, I don't have to do some of the things Ms Low-Kramen has to. However, there are many things which are similar in our positions. We have to read the mind of our boss, know where to find anything at a moment's notice and know who to let in and who to keep out.Too many people thing an assistant is a 'secretary' who makes coffee and answers phones. Yes, we do that - and so much more. This book may help in elevating the perception of the position to where it should be. We are Managers, with a capital M. We manage everything from dry cleaning to setting up meetings to getting in new business. Thank you to Ms Low-Kramen for trying to show what we do on a day to day basis.

More of an interview read or memory-inducing read than a story but well worth the time to read. I felt as if I were sitting at the table with Coach Bowden hands on my chin staring at the legend himself. The feel is very Q&A but otherwise good.

Love it. Haven't read it all yet but good.

The book is good and direct to point the only problem is that after you pay $6.00 you can only read it with Kindle apps or devices, the download is not even a pdf file, it is a bummer you can not print a page for reference when you need to practice the exercises described in the book. Is very hard and annoying to try to practice in the computer and having to switch between application to read and practice, you just get frustrated and annoyed since you lose track of the work flow, why a paper copy is not available. Books are supposed to be a didactical tool, so students can use it freely. I was thinking to buy the other one but I'm holding up for now, right now it just seems like a waste of money, since I cannot use the book the way I envisioned.

Have not completed the tutorial but appreciate the way the tutorial is written I find written guide easier to digest and learn the subject matter look forward to finishing this tutorial and moving onto the others

I am totally new to Maya, and why I liked this book of lessons is you jump right in...and you can start playing with tools and shapes by using the tutorials. For me, I like just getting in there and playing and figuring stuff out, and this helps you make things and learn your way around at the same time. No fluff. So, it was fine to me, and I'll probably buy the other ones as I go on, too!

The author did a really good job of simplifying all the most fundamental concepts in Maya. If you’re looking for a starting point or a refresher course, this is the book for you!

this book doesn't use NURBS but uses Polygons but it didn't matter I used NURBS and followed the tutorials and what i read in 20 min, my teacher couldn't teach in 2.5 hours to me. simple and straightforward. i was having major problems at school using my professors lectures. THANK YOU FOR SAVING MY LIFE. PLEASE WRITE MORE TUTORIALS FOR MAYA :)

I don't understand why everyone is complaining about this book only having two new stories. It has been advertised for months that 5 of the books were previous novellas Gabaldon has written AND if you check the price for her novellas you would pay $8-10 individually so two new books out of seven for $18.00 (at least that's what I paid for Stones) is aproximately $9.00 each. Did you not read the description before you bought it? It plainly tells you what books are in it, plus Diana has explained countless times for almost a year on her FB page, Twitter, and in interviews that it has 5 previous books....Just saying!Update: Diana said today that the two new novellas will eventually be sold as stand alone books.

I'm a HUGE fan of both the Outlander and Lord John Grey series, so this was truly a treat!Having read most of the novellas in other collections, I'll focus on one of the new stories that was a stand out for me - "A Fugitive Green." Like most of the secondary characters in this fictionverse, His Grace the Duke of Pardloe/Harold Grey is a standout, as is his wife, Her Grace Minerva Wattiswade Grey. Their dynamic in the Lord John series has long delighted me, and the tantalizing tale of the "union" that led to their marriage mentioned in "The Scottish Prisoner" left me wanting to know more. Thankfully, that story beautifully unfolds in the novella in which a young Minnie arrives in London on a mission to gather intelligence for her father. She takes a few detours, including a side job to unravel the mystery surrounding one of many scandals plaguing His Grace - namely the duel that caused the death of fellow peer Nathaniel Twelvetrees at the hands of the Duke. When Minerva accidentally encounters Hal and catches a glimpse of the man behind the title and scandal, she develops a personal interest in the case. But will the information she uncovers help or hurt the Duke, and will she trade honor for coin by selling the information to Twelvetrees' brother?Minnie is a complex character and more than a match for the temperamental and mercurial Duke. And her other adventures in London range from comical (sparring with Harry Quarry, working with the ever crafty and entertaining O'Higgins twins) to heartbreaking (searching for the mother she never knew). This companion piece is a delightful addition to the captivating world built by Diana Gabaldon. Highly recommend!

I've read already five of the stories in this volume so I went straight to the new ones: A Fugitive Green and Besieged. Wonderful stories about Hal & Minnie and Lord John Grey respectively. As usual, Diana works her magic with the alchemy of humor and tragedy; deeply human characters in dire situations that find the light of humor and hope shining through. Even if -like me- you already have most of the stories, the book is worth buying just for the new ones. And it never hurts to enjoy the old one again ;)

Even though I had read most of the books included in this collection, I read them again and enjoyed them almost as much as I did the first (few) times. After all, most Outlander fans, like me, have read the "big books" several times over! I loved the two new stories and I loved reading "Virgins" again...even the line that always brings tears to my eyes "On your right, man"...When I hit that line, all I can see in my head is Ian whispering those words to Jamie as the lay dying and the water works start. Great job as usual Ms. Gabaldon!

Each time I enter the worlds and words created by Diana Gabaldon, I am reminded why she is unquestionably one of my very favorite authors. Her writing is so smart, and demands the reader to think smartly to keep up with her biting wit, her cunning use of irony, and her amazing talent for telling a really good story. In this series of anecdotes, we learn more about the characters encountered in the primary novels of the Outlander series. I especially appreciated the glimpse of Ian as one of Jamie’s earliest and deepest friendships. It was also good to see a snipit of who Ian was as a young man, and before the loss of his leg. Each story is similarly rich in the glimpse of backstory for each character. I believe I have finally come to adore and respect Lord John as Gabaldon surely wants us to, and as she so clearly does herself.

There are only 2 stories in this volume that are notreprints. But I loved them. I am addicted to the series.Both the new ones are about secondary characters.The one, "Beseiged" is Lord John, his mother.and some extendedfamily, set in Cuba, during a politically dangerous event. .The other is the story "Fugitive Green" is of Hal and Minnieand how they ended up getting married. I wanted a bit moreof that story, If you have read the previous stories you knowHal met Minnie when she was a prowler in his house and fell in love on the spot. He then spent several months lookingfor her. But Diana does not tell us how he figured out whereshe was. He just suddenly shows up at the end, discovers he'sabout to be a father, and whisks her off to be married, which left me a bit frustrated because I love mysteries and wantedto see him follow a clue or two. But its a lovely story, whatthere is of it, and I will probably read it several more times.All of these stories are better appreciated if one has readthe main Outlander books first, at lest the first 3 "Outlander""Dragonfly in Amber" and "Voyager".

If it's been a while since I've read something by Diana Gabaldon, I find myself wondering if it was really as good as I remember--and it always is. Even though I was re-re-reading the 5 older stories in this book of 7, I was instantly swept up into their lives--again. The new stories about Hal and Minnie and Roger's parents are beautiful additions to the world of Outlander, and give rich background to the big books, I love these people. Damn, she's good! .

This is a great supplement for the Alfred series. I always have my students start right in with the Theory book corresponding to the Lesson Book. It seems to solidify what we have talked about each week in lessons.

I have been a pianist for the last 25 years, and my 5 year old daughter decided she wanted to learn. We don't have any instructors in our city, so I decided I could teach her in the beginning. I remembered using the Alfred books when I began lessons, so I was happy to see they were still in print! I ordered the Alfred's Basic Piano Course Lesson Book, Theory, and Technic (Level 1). They are meant to go together.The books are well laid out and simple for a child to follow. My 5 year old is an early reader, and with me, she has no problem following these books. They are illustrated and the print is large.The books will let you know when to incorporate the lessons from the Theory and Technic books, as the lessons taught will coincide and help build on each other.In the beginning, your child will learn the basics on reading music, but for the first half of the books, a numbered finger system will be used in place of a traditional staff. This is to build your child's ability to use their separate fingers correctly.If you are using this as a parent to teach your own child, my only advice is to go slowly and patiently. Make sure that the child understands and is using the correct technic before moving ahead. It is a simple book, but speed is not key. This takes time and practice in order to build confidence.This is the perfect first lesson book.

I have been teaching private piano lessons for 15 years and I am delighted with the Alfred series. This book specifically has quite a few songs that the kids will recognize. It starts by introducing the dotted quarter not, which is often difficult for students. It ends with great coverage of the primary chords, I, IV, V7. I love the approach Alfred takes to introducing those chords, then using them so much for the accompaniment. At first the kids are always very confused by it, but by the end of the book, they recognize them easily in all their pieces and can name them without any trouble. Be aware that some of the supplements in the series are substantially harder than the corresponding lesson book.

The Alfred's Basic Piano Prep Course book is the perfect addition for any new piano player. These basic piano teaching books are easy to follow, easy to read, and easy to teach. The pages are filled with a good use of white space. The book itself is made of good quality and I do not feel that they will easily deteriorate. I believe that these books by Alfred's Basic Piano Prep are the basic books for piano knowledge and a great place to start a beginner. I have already purchased other of the Alfred's Basic Piano Prep Course books and will continue to purchase from this publisher. I have also steered my student's toward purchasing their own sets of these books to help with practicing outside of the classroom setting. These books will definitely stay around in my teaching library for years to come!! I look forward to seeing what other prep books are written and how they supplement the current books!

I would call myself a beginner piano teacher, as I play the piano myself but have had no instruction as to how to teach others to play. I now have four beginner students, whom I have been teaching for a little over a year.I love the Alfred method. The four books: technic, lesson, solo/recital, and theory all seem to really work well together. The songs coordinate with each other, so for each new concept taught in the lesson books, the student has a warm-up, a solo piece, and some theory work to back it up. I find this to be very effective. It gives the students a chance to see several examples of each concept, and practice each new concept in different ways until they achieve perfection with it. It also really walks the teacher through each concept very clearly, giving definitions for musical terms and clear instructions for which songs go together. I feel like the order in which concepts are taught also makes a lot of sense.Overall, it's a good method for a teacher who doesn't know a whole lot about HOW to teach another person to play the piano!I currently have some of my students on this level, and others on the regular beginner levels. I love how all of the different levels are interchangeable, so gifted students can advance more quickly, and students who need a little extra reinforcement can stay on the lower levels. The map for how this all works is on the back of all of the books, which you can see on the book preview. So many great things about Alfred!

This product arrived within a few days of ordering. It was in pristine condition. I use this set of books because they are what my piano teacher prefers to teach from. Although the book says for later beginners, it should be a bit more specific. It is definitely not designed for adult learners (the songs are geared more toward children or adolescents). I do not mind so much, but others might. All in all a great buy. I recommend the seller. Delivered as promised and had a very accurate description of product. I am very pleased.

I have more than a full collection of Christmas piano books for my students. I have one young student who is currently in the Alfred B lesson book. It sticks mostly to the C position and does not introduce the Middle C position. I purchased this book specifically for her to have songs in her usual position. Turns out this book is completely in the Middle C position. I'll probably keep it because it has teacher duets, but I'd still recommend the Bastien Christmas books over this series. The layout is cleaner and the pictures are more enticing.
