The author of this great cookbook lives in my hometown of Ketchikan, Alaska. She and her husband commercially fish. She is an excellent cook. I have never had a bad recipe yet from her cookbook. I highly recommend this cookbook not only for the delicious recipes, but because they are healthy recipes as well. The cookbook is worth it just for the beautiful photos.

This book is a true gem! Beautiful photos of not only recipes, but of many places in Alaska. All the photography is excellent. The recipes are pretty easy to prepare and have ingredients I use. I thoroughly enjoyed every single page of this book!

If I could give this cookbook 10 stars I would! I bought it in Ketchikan in July, and have cooked my way through so many of recipes already. 3 friends have bought the book after seeing mine. I too lived with a Tiny Alaska Oven for many years, the book is so fun. Susan

Great book and a lot of recipes that I will be trying on our boat.

Ladonna and Ole Gundersen make their living and life on the rough waters off the Alaska Coast. I've been to Alaska many times. My husband and son love to fish for Salmon and Halibut, thus it's left to me to figure out how to prepare their catch in such a way as to not ruin it! Both salmon and halibut are delicate foods, and need to be handled with care, and love. This beautiful cookbook, filled with Ole's photographs of Ladonna's mouthwatering dishes, has helped me tremendously. In "My Tiny Alaskan Oven" you get more than recipes for Salmon and Halibut. You get the whole gamut! I love to bake and to have choices, and this book allows me to do both. There is a lot of tips and helpful hints, plus the “scaled down equipment” that you will need. There are sweet and savory recipes, so many to choose from, I can’t wait to start baking. If you love to bake and don’t want to make “full” recipes, I would suggest on getting this cookbook.

I received this book as a gift as I had high hopes for small batch baking. I have now made a number of the recipes most of which were not satisfactory in my opinion. I am NOT a novice baker, I have baked for years and am used to complicated recipes as well as simple. Thus I thought these should work but each one I have tried I questioned the measurements.for example, the vanilla cupcakes and the strawberry buttercream layer cake. Great ideas, poor in application. Both of the cakes turned out incredibly dense and greasy I believe she adds way too much butter as neither turned out light and fluffy and there was an excess of grease, especially around the cupcakes. The frostings also were loaded with butter and did not hold up light and fluffy like frosting should. I might expect something like this in an alternative ingredient recipe but this is using standard baking ingredients, all which I used and followed her instructions to the letter, only to have disappointing results. The flavors were ok but nothing to write home about.I think the people who have reviewed the book haven't made the recipes at all thus the reviews are misleading to those who would want the purchase the book. Had I known these things I known these things I would not have put it on my gift idea list.I am scared to try any other cakes or what are supposed to be fluffy baked goods because she will probably want nearly a cup of butter for a small batch!Now, the scone recipe was decent and the blueberry muffins I would make again, but I am hesitant about just about anything else as I've had too many fails vs successes and this is not, I repeat to user error as I am not new to baking.I also have now tried two of the biscuit recipes and they were good, no problems but due to the experience of greasy everything else I always cut out at least 1 TBS of butter and they worked out just fine. Besides, on biscuits you add more butter once cooked anyways!And, if you like baking books with actual photos then this is also not for you, you would think in this type of book photos would be had but there are none other than the ones at the beginning of each chapter. Huge disappointment.So if you are interested, save yourself the trouble and find another small batch book or just try from her blog but do so with great caution and concern. OR try halving a recipe yourself, you'd probably get better results than her talking about how expertly she did this when in fact, its quite horrible.Would I recommend the book? No.

There is no table of contents or index. How can i find a specific recipe? Do I really have to go through all 100 pages?

I'm loving small batch cooking and baking and this is a wonderful cookbook! I've already tried two recipes and they both came out perfectly. I really like the tips at the end of the recipes. Can't wait to try more recipes!

This is a great cookbook if you are baking for one or two. I bought a 6 inch pie pan at the same time I bought the book. Several of the recipes can use small standard size pans, but the pie pan is hard to find where I live. If I was giving this book as a gift I would give it with the 6 inch pie pan.

Love the recipes. Already made the orange bundt cake, both of the cheesecake recipes and the cinnamon rolls. I was surprised that the small size recipes tasted so good and pretty easy to make as well. I've started baking again because I no longer have so much left over.

This is the perfect book for small batch baking for two. No worrying about trying to cut recipes in half ,this book is perfect. Recipes are simply written, instructions well explained. Would recommend this book .

Such a great addition to my collection. I am definitely a novice baker, and the helpful hints were fantastic! The author/baker was soooo helpful! I have enjoyed trying the different recipes! They are so easy to follow. I really appreciate the fact that everything is cut down, which makes cooking for two a breeze.I highly recommend this book and have been telling everyone about it!

Best book for beginners teaches like in a classroom. Explain every thing to basics

This book like all the Sean Bennett books is very poorly written. The book often contradicts itself. Review questions are not also based on material from the current edition as the industry has changed but the the book uses the same questions from previous editions of the book. even when the subject asked is not discussed in most recent edition. there are typos and other issues key terms in the chapters don't have a definition in the glossary the list goes on. Schools should not use Sean Bennett books there are better books out there however we are stuck with this one.

Used in my son's diesel program, a keeper for future reference!

While it is a fairly good summary of of the newest incarnation of Windows ir is practically worthless if one has experience and needs under the hood tinformation to trouble shoot problems. The problem with the Missing Manual series is the manuals miss a lot of relevant information. that would actually help diagnose and trouble shoot problems. Spends too much space of a lot of junk that comes with Windows, but not really useful. Microsoft has crippled a lot of apps that were once really useful. For example the calculator. In the past it used to come up on top and have focus. Now it comes down and stays in the back until I force it up and even then it does not have focus. Granted this is not and issue for every one, I would like to be able to configure it my way. or at leas the way it used to work. There are a lot of apps I absolutely have no use for and would like to uninstall them, but I can't. I'd like to configure the interface with a look and feel to my liking not just what MS wants to offer but I digress. Here are some issues Pogue should have considered. What is a console session? What does the registry do? Under what circumstances should I attempt to edit a registry entry? What does regedit not work with windows 10? Not a shred of information regarding the SFC (System File Checker) utility that comes with Windows; in fact there a lot of undocumented utilities that come with Windows. He mentions MSCONFIG once and says nothing more than it is and how unfriendly it is (that is specious). His has given users a nearly 700 page book that purports to be "the Missing Manual", but the "manual" is missing a lot. Granted this may be a marketing position assumed by the, used to offer better and useful information, publisher. I gave it three stars, only because there is some (dual boot and such) but not much useful information and it props up the leg of my writing table. The really irksome thing is that computer books loose more value after purchase than a new car. Wait until Windows 10.1 The Missing Manual.One last constant source of irritation is the index. Recently wanted to look up info regarding the "notification area". Went to the index looked up 'notification area" when referred to the index entry for "system tray", "system tray" sent me back to look in "notifications", the entry following "notification area". Yeah, could have just looked at "notifications", but thought "system tray" offered something more than "notifications". Since I don't think the author sat there churning out the index, have to set blame on the publisher. And yes, I worked several years in the print and publishing industry. Sorry gonged one star

I have been using Windows 10 since Saturday night, February 20, 2016......less than 24 hrs. ago. I am not a novice nor a tech guru. I am just as confused as some of you.I am a retired business teacher with 30 years in the classroom. I have used Apple computers and PC computers as a teacher and for personal use. Windows 10 is as new to me as to most of you. There is a "learning curve" with each new adventure. Please don't "give up".....it will be worth the effort. The author Smee is clearly in tune with the artist Freud, so the sometimes difficult going of reading about paintings and painters isn't to be found here. Others have noted the small format and less than stellar quality of the reproductions. Fair enough, but the range of artwork presented is very good, and if you like the artist you'll be encouraged to seek out other sources of the material. I'd really like to see the original of that outstanding cover painting of the Queen of England, for example.

Having little knowledge of art and artists, I saw a short biography of Lucian Freud and his art in a magazine which made me want to know more. I found this small book very insightful about both the art and the man. It detailed the focus of the art in ways my untrained eye could not discern. I, in short, needed help and I found it in this book. I have now purchased a book of his paintings to further my interest. This small book was exactly what I was looking for.

Excellent book on Lucian Freud.

A great overview, especially for 10$. The reproductions were of a high quality and the text was pretty good too. The only thing lacking was close-ups of the work so you could see the painting technique which I'd have really liked.

I am very pleased with this book. The quality of the printing is great and the selection of paintings is wonderful.

This book is very Amy Schumer. If you like her sense of humor, you'll enjoy this. If you don't, this probably isn't going to win you over. Her writing style is VERY casual (for example, at one point she writes "JKJKJKJKJKJKJKJK"). While I did not find this off putting, I could see how others might. While she mostly tells stories, she will occasionally offer life advice at the end of her chapter. This was nice to hear, but did seem out of place. She also isn't afraid to get political, so be prepared for that as you're reading. Personally, I love Amy's humor and thoroughly enjoyed this book. It kept my attention for the most part and I had a few good laughs. Worth a read!

Her jokes weren't that funny and the constant foot notes that she read throws the book totally off. Would not recommend.

While this book had some very funny and touching moments, it was, for the most part a platform for the author to spout her personal agenda[s] and political views and scold the reader for not being open minded (code for "see it my way or be cussed out"). As a rule, I would like entertainers to entertain. If you have a point of view, or something you feel passionate about, fine. If your a comedian, help me see it by making it funny in some way. Don't go on and on about how it's your book and F-the reader if they don't like it. If a reader wants to hear long, drawn out...pontifications...on some personal agenda or political views this is the book for you. Personally, I would got to the established sources for that to get my fill rather than a book that I was hoping to make me laugh a lot more than it did. All in all, for me, a very disappointing read. The author, in my opinion, is extremely talented actor and stand-up and should probably see writing as a form of personal therapy than entertainment

It is a funny book, with lots of personal humor. However, I found myself getting tired of her off the wall, in your face writing about 1/2 way through the book. Definitely some great portions but not a fan of all of it.

She wrote this book mad at her mom and I think she is going to regret what she wrote in the future. I don't think it's fun for the reader to be middle of mom rant. I love her show but this book dragged and was not funny.

I love Amy's stand-up, tv show and movie and I guess I expected more from this book. For the most part, the stories were not funny and the writing was mediocre. I've read a lot of female comedian memoirs (e.g. Chelsea Handler, Ken Kirkman, Sarah Colonna, Kathy Griffin, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, etc.) I would recommend any of those authors over Amy.

Thought it was a waste of time. Stories of humiliation. I was embarrassed for her.

Light read, funny, interesting depiction of Amy's life and career. If she truly wrote this, I'd almost argue that her writing is even wittier than her standup.

I wouldn't say this is a bad book- but I wouldn't say it was as good as I wanted it to be. I've admired Amy for years and was so excited to read her first book. I bought tickets to her show and not only did she cancel, but then she provided this book which was proficient at best. Give us more raunchy material! I don't care what your stuffed animals names are. I care about your one night stands and drunken mistakes. Thank you.

I’m honestly really disappointed in this book. It is basically just the song “if you are happy and you know it” rewritten. The last two Groovy Joe books were so much fun to read but this was just a song. I was expecting so much more.

Loved everything about this item. Can’t wait to give it to my granddaughters for their birthday!

This is a predictable book, with the value added that it is also a song. My kids love it.

Very repetitive...virtually just a song put in the book

This book will be a great addition to my nephews book collection. The "remake" of this tune has a great rhythm and good choice of words for kids (of all ages) to follow and sing along.

Chushingura (The Treasury of Loyal Retainers), also known as the story of the Forty-Six (or Forty-Seven) Ronin, is the most famous and perenially popular of all Japanese dramas. Written around 1748 as a puppet play, it is now better know in Kabuki performances. In the twentieth century, cinema and television versions have been equally successful. Donald Keene here presents a complete translation of the original text, with notes and an introduction that increase the reader's comprehension and enjoyment of the play. The introduction also elucidates the idea of loyalty. This traditional virtue, as exemplified in Chushingura, has never completely lost its hold on audiences, in spite of twentieth-century changes in Japanese society and moral ideas. Moreover, as Professor Keene points out, the excitement, color and violence expressed in the play may be considered the counterpoint to the austere restraint and understatement which are more commonly thought to be "traditionally" Japanese.

Popularly known as the Tale of the 47 Ronin, this is one of the most famous stories in Japanese history and literature - and one well worth knowing because it is so basic to an understanding of Japanese culture. Based on a series of actual events at the beginning of the 18th century, Chushingura tells the story of a group of samurai who have lost their Master to ritual suicide ("seppuku"). The suicide was ordered as honorable atonement for the master's purportedly unjustified treatment of a court official. The term "Ronin" refers to samurai (also known as "retainers") who are masterless - which usually means their master (lord, or daimyo) has been killed or disgraced.In this story the samurai, now left on their own as ronin, plot revenge against that court official. Without going further with the story, it's impact was to underscore the basic Japanese virtues of loyalty, bravery, and self-sacrifice. You'll find treatments of this famous historical incident throughout Japanese literature, art, film and drama. This version was written for the puppet theater, known as Bunraku. I don't want to take time to detail bunraku here, other than to say that it is powerful drama which uses large "puppets" - animated by people rather than strings, as in the West. This particular puppet play is one of the most highly regarded treatments of the ronin story.Here's an interesting footnote to the drama, which was written in 1748 - nearly half a century after the actual event in 1703. Chushingura takes place in 1338 - almost four centuries earlier than the event. Why? Government policy forbade portrayal of recent events in the arts. (In the long span of Japanese history a half century qualified as "recent".) The shoguns wouldn't brook criticism of their rule, which often was the intent baked into drama or woodblock prints. Nor would they tolerate art which stirred popular passions based on current events like murder or suicide. A pacified populace going about its mundane business was the best assurance against revolution. So dramatists and artists wishing to exploit recent events for commercial gain routinely disguised their characters as long-ago figures of history and legend, and transplanted their plots back in time accordingly.

"Chushingura" is Japan's "Romeo and Juliet". Not literally, of course, as the stories are very different, but in the way that it is a story that every Japanese person knows. Based on an actual incident, the story has been glorified and told and re-told for every generation, and still reverberates in hearts today. It is also, traditionally, a very hard story for Westerners to come to grips with, because the morals on display are not what we would consider to be admirable.Loyalty is something we can admire, of course, but this is unearned loyalty. The 47 Ronin do not avenge their lord because he was a good man, because he is worthy of their loyalty. They avenge him because he is their Master, and because he was born to be their master. The samurai also did not earn their position, they were born samurai, as an inherited class. Their job, rank and income was all decided the moment they drew their first breath, along with whom they would owe their loyalty to. The very word "samurai" translates as "servant", and without someone to serve they have no purpose. They uphold an inherently unfair system, as shown by their unwillingness to include a merchant in their vendetta, not because his courage is less but because his birth-determined class is lower than theirs.Donald Keene has performed a minor miracle with his translation of "Chushingura: The Treasury of Loyal Retainers". First off, his introduction deals with the inherent difficulties in the work. Even in Japan, since the inception of the work their has been debate on who are the heroes and who are the villains. A hotheaded lord sacrifices his life, family, home and the lives of the hundreds who depend on him simply because he could not swallow an insult. His personal pride was more important to him than all of these people's lives, all of whom paid his price. Keene shows the various points of view, the commentary given by Japanese authors over the years, and the way the story has been interpreted to support the various viewpoints of society.On top of that, he has created a thrilling translation, one that can be read as a novel and is hard to put down once started. Think what you may of the moral lesson, the story itself is pure adrenalin, and it is hard not to cheer for the sword-hard loyalty that drives the 47 Ronin. In this translation, there is no dispute as to who the heroes are, even as they sell their wives into prostitution in order to raise funds for the vendetta, or willing slit the throats of their own children in order to prove their earnestness. Keene also provides annotations for some of the more obscure references and translations, especially the references to famous Chinese poems and allegories which are abundant.I picked up this book thinking it was going to be a study guide for Japan's most famous story, hoping to glean some insight into a tale I have seen dozens of times in different interpretations. I got that, but what I also got was a great book, fun and exciting to read. I wasn't expecting that at all.

As another reviewer has noted, this book is impossible to put down. Although I am not a big fan of introductions-before-book, this one by Donald Keene helps a lot (the spoilers are few) and is recommended. Professor Keene's translation style is very limpid and flowing -- one is surprised by the end of Act Eleven when the climactic action sequence is brought to an end.Fans of Bunraku (puppet theatre) and Kabuki should have this book -- and hopefully the National Theatre in Tokyo might offer either version of the play (one can get in and see Bunraku these days for about 40-50 bucks).A note of warning: as Prof. Keene points out, this work of literature shows the other side of Japanese art (in contrast to austere restraint, this shows the Japanese love for color and violence) -- but it is not a non-stop action work. Instead, it deals more with the "tests" of loyalty (hence the title) each retainer must show in order to be allowed to participate in the final plan to kill their lord's enemy. In that way, Chushingura is much more about the love the retainers have for their lord than, in my opinion, the hatred and violence they harbor against the enemy. Uma Thurman in samurai garb, they are not...uh...Fans of Chikamatsu's plays will find this popular work refreshing -- it moves at a much faster pace, with more feints here and there. As a result, it lacks the gravitas of Chikamatsu's works, but it is much more fun. A great book to own and then pass around to friends.

It's an excellent translation of a complicated puppet theatre play. I don't suppose changes can be made at this point, but the one improvement that could be made would be a list of principal characters at the start of the translation. It gets confusing for students.

It was a nice read but very interesting.

I just received my copy today and haven't been able to put this book down. It is beautifully put together with great photography, personal stories from Kim Nelson, and, of course, easy-to-follow recipes. I'm not much of a baker so easy and clear is top priority. And I love that the book includes desserts other than amazing cakes because I love pies and cookies equally as much. Top on my list to make: Butter Brickle Cookies, Mint Chocolate Layer Pie, and Pumpkin Roll. My plan to give this book to my son has gone down the kitchen sink. Looks like more purchases to be made ;-)

Purchased for my daughter, every recipe she has tried had been excellent. Easy to follow and understand directions and authors touching family memories about making these recipes as a kid.

The stories are decent but definitely not worth reading through all the misspelled words trying to figure out what is being conveyed. I sometimes found myself reading this book and wondering why I was trying to finish it. I guess subconsciously I was always waiting for the kicker and sadly it never came. If you're a poor sapp who owns this book; make sure to leave it as far away from you as possible.

Wonderful book! Now more people in the family want to buy it!

Great book. Fast reading could not put it down read it in two days. Good reading for any true Yankee fan.

We have a couple of die hard Yankees fans in the family so what better gift to get than this book?!?! Perfect condition when it arrived so I'm very pleased with that.

I bought this book for my brother who is a rabid Yankees fan. I read it too and it has some great stories from players from the past. I'd recommend it to any Yankee fan.

Amazing Tales from the New York Yankee Dugout???There's nothing amazing here. Nothing at all. Mostly just old retreads and time worn stories. Not even "tales," just stories.Anyone with the least bit of knowledge about the Yankees will find this book dull and redundant. Not much here. Typos, grammatical errors and seemingly misplaced paragraphs detract from this book as well. It is as if it was hurriedly put together just to meet a deadline and maybe make a dollar or two.(Unfortunately, it got my dollar(s)!!!)If you want to read, really want to read, some amazing tales from the Yankee Dugout, try these two books: ""Coming of Age with the New York Yankees" by Matthew Mcgough, a former batboy, and/or "Clubhouse Confidential" by Louis Castillo, another former Yankee Batboy. I found Mcgough book more interesting and touching, but both are worth the read and both are better, much better, than this one and its not so amazing tales from the Yankee Dugout...

The poorest excuse for a book that I have seen in a long time. A couple of guys put together a bunch of stuff, a lot of which isn't even interesting, and tried to make a buck on the Yankee name.In addition to the typos there is just stuff that doesn't make sense and half the time you can't tell who is telling the story. Obviously if there was any proofreading it was spell-check only.This book needed an editor but then again by the time a decent editing job was done you would have about enough stuff for a four page newsletter!I got it from my son who bought it cheap at a yard sale—good thing.
