I read this while getting my Masters in Computer Science, decades ago, and found it very current and helpful. Now it might still be interesting, but would be highly dated, as 25% of the information in that industry changes every year. Back then, it would have rated 5 stars. Now, maybe 3 for anyone other than a historian, so averaged it to 4. Well written and enjoyable; just about stuff you can't even buy any more, and wouldn't want to if you could.

This book is a non-fiction account of the development of a mini-computer in the 1980s. The book begins by describing the background: Data General, a computer company, has been recently leapfrogged by a competitor who put out a 32-bit mini computer system over their 16-bit system. To keep up with their major competitor (DEC), the company begins a development project for their own 32-bit mini computer.The company HQ is based in Massachusetts. What complicates matters is that the CEO establishes a new R&D center in North Carolina where he hopes the new 32-bit mini computer will be built. The new R&D center however, creates a major rift between the engineers who stayed in Massachusetts and the ones who work in North Carolina - as both groups want to be in charge of development. A major feud begins, but basically the group in North Carolina wins and gets to build the new 32-bit system.However, the story begins in Massachusetts....Tom West, an engineering manager in Massachusetts, manages to convince the management that it would be worthwhile to have a 'back-up' 32-bit computer system, that was perhaps backwards compatible with their old 16-bit systems. It would be a sort of 'insurance' so to speak in case development efforts in North Carolina took too long.With a handful of experienced engineers as team leaders, he recruits essentially fresh college graduates and works the hell out of them to create a rival 32-bit computer system.Over the course of the book, it becomes apparent that the North Carolina facility - despite having more resources, money, engineers, etc. - will not in fact be able to launch their product in a timely fashion. West's team of new recruits really does need to release their product in order for the company to continue competing in the mini-computer market.The book is not written so much on the technical details of the project, but rather is more of a 'documentary' of the experience of being on the product development team.The level of detail this book captures, and at each level (from West's perspective, the perspective of a number of the fresh college graduates, his experienced Team Leaders who speculated on West's motives in driving everyone so hard, the background situation of the company and management) is perfect.Looking back historically, one could easily just conclude that the Massachusetts team succeeded for all sorts of technical reasons. But there were a lot of interesting human reasons for why the project succeeded. For one, the project should have never been started in Massachusetts in the first place. The company management did not seem to have any clear idea of what to put their engineers to work on (or even really know what they were working on) and a wily manager was able to sneak the project by, masquerading it as something else.As engineer on a product development team for a robotic system, I can 100% relate to this book.The ridiculous management decisions, the company politics, engineers working insane hours on esoteric problems, the strange culture of engineers, the product launch and general lack of appreciation for the engineer's work afterwards - it's amazingly well captured in this book, and I was surprised at how my current company and previous company experiences relate so strongly to the product development described here.What I liked most about it, was that a lot of the decisions made by West, the company, etc were highly irrational, if you looked at them from the company perspective. The company SHOULD have only had one group working on the development project. West SHOULD have explained to his team the importance of what they were working on and perhaps been more involved on the day to day decisions of the project, just as the VP of Engineering SHOULD have been more cognizant of what West's entire team was up to. (The author writes about 'mushroom management' in the book - keep 'em in the dark and feed 'em *edited by Amazon Censors*). But in reality, for often political reasons, feuds, the strange driven personality of a particular manager, the strange management practices of the CEO, all of these mistakes get made, and yet a 32-bit mini computer gets built and saves the company in the end anyway.It's a great book because it is all true.I am not sure how interesting this would be for someone that doesn't work in product development, but for me, I see this mistakes made in my company every day. It's amazing how much individual personalities, and strange coincidences can drive a project.An additional tidbit, Wired magazine did a follow up with all of the engineers years after this book was written:"[...]"Google 'O, Engineers!', 'Soul of a New Machine, Wired' in case Amazon gets rid of the link.A great book.

This book should be on the desk of every manager of technical projects in the US. More than any other work in history, it shows how innovation occurs, and how a few near-genius and hard-working individuals can get things done. It also shows modern organizational theory to be badly flawed, and that the much vaunted group-dynamics and teamwork cannot replace a few bright minds who are dedicated to inventing a new product. The Apple Computer is an example of the concept I'm describing: Steve Wozniac invented the Apple in his garage, and Steve Jobs marketed it. Amazing, isn't it -- one man essentially created the personal computer all by himself. All alone, not even with a team made of diverse talents and representing various viewpoints. All they do is create kludges that require incessant maintenance and updates. Sound familiar?

I read this Pol based on few recommendations, it took me a while to finish it though. I find certain part of the book to detailed and boring eventually I had to put effort t finish it all. I cannot say it is bad written, on the contrary it reads well however the subject and the way to tell the story is not my way. Overall a classical book strongly recommended if you are a manager as it explains how to build a group of achiever and potentially shows the aftermath of great success.

A bunch of people haphazardly come together to build a new computer and with trust from their managers and earnest desire to excel in their craft manage to bring the damn thing to life.I personally found this relatable on so many levels; not only the pastiche of people working on the project but also the range of company politics and bickering. This book punched me in the stomach purely from the fact that the project's leader, Tom West, blatantly describes the power of trust to lead teams.An easy 10/10 recommendation from me to any technical person who will inevitably hit some kind of existential crisis in their career and find this book enlightening as it did for me.

I liked this book. The development of the MV/8000 was taking place about the time I was becoming involved in computers, and by the time it hit the market I was a field service engineer working on IBM mainframes, and playing around with a PDP-11 when I could. It was very interesting to read the account of how the hardware and microcode were developed, especially in light of the training I had in essentially similar microcoded machines around the same time frame.On the other hand, even after having read the entire book I still don't really get the feeling I understand what made a couple of the central players tick. Maybe the author never really figured it out either. Anyway, it's well written and well worth reading, especially if you can relate to the way things were "way back" at the tail end of the 70s and the early 80s.

A wonderful saga reported in this Pulitzer Prize winning book detailing the lives and exploits of the fishermen and crabbers of the Chesapeake Bay Area. The author writes wonderfully and with honest sympathy of the hard but worthwhile lives of the Bay Fishermen. If you would like a wonderfully written intreaging story of the watermen of the Chesapeake Bay this will be your fantastic escape into their lives and struggles to make a living from the Bay waters.

I've been greatly enlightened in the life cycle of crabs....And it was done in a most entertaining way....While the book is a little long in the tooth as compared to the present crab industry, the basics of crab life described in the book endure...I highly recommend this book if you are curious about crabs and the crab waterman's life circa 50-70's......

This is a wonderful book about a little known industry. If you want to know about crabs and about the crab fishermen this will tell you all you want to know. It is a classic, perennial best seller (published in 1975) for a reason.

This book expanded my understanding of Chesapeake Bay. I have worked on crab boats out of Little Creek, Virginia.The captain of the boat was a good man to work for. That was back in the summer of 1966, so I can't remember his name. I only wish that all bosses I have served under were so kind. Lessons are learned by doing, not sitting in a class room. Memories too.

This is one of the best books ever written about the watermen (specifically commercial crabbers) of the Chesapeake Bay on the east coast of the United States. I have owned this book for a long time, but I usually take it off the bookshelf about once a year to read and enjoy it again. William W. Warner definitely hit a home run with this book!

A really good read,a wonderful winter read and a great guide book to the Bay and it's watermen!

For anyone wanting to learn about quality and improvement principles, model, method and tools, this is the ONLY book you'll ever need to read. A one time disciple and devotee of Deming, Lou Schultz, once told me that Tom Nolan was the closest thing we have to a Dr. W. Edwards Deming today. After reading this book, I think you'll agree. The other authors are a very close second. These guys are the best of the best at what they do. My almost two year old son has recently become very interested in Dora the Explorer. This is a very nice little story that includes both Dora and Diego. Santa's reindeer become sick, so Diego takes care of them and Dora and Boots help Santa deliver Christmas presents. My son really enjoys this book because it shows Santa, Dora and Boots delivering presents to animals all over the earth. He really likes to point them all out. Overall this is a nice story...perfect length for a toddler, not too short...not too long.

This is a good Christmas story for fans of Dora the Explorer but a little long for those under the age of four years old. Wish there were Dora books that were shorter for those 2 to 4 years old.

I did not order this

I bought this because my daughters are huge (but fairly new) Dora fans. We see the cartoons on Nick Jr. and have 'Dora's Christmas Carol Adventure'. Most of the book seems to focus on these star characters which we have yet to see on a Dora episode (like I said, we are fairly new to Dora). There was no mention of the map, which is one of my daughters favorite characters. So far, my girls haven't really taken to this book. They seem to prefer other Christmas books we have.This is book is very typical of books in this price range. Thin cover and pages - not for kids who still need board books.

Just like all of Dora's books there is lots of color and lots of characters to look at. My daughter is 17 months old and LOVES books especially with pictures lol.

My 3 year old daughter lovers her Dora book. Well she really loves anything Dora. 5 year old son not so much.

Downloaded this Christmas book for my 5 yr old granddaughter. We had fun reading this interactive book over and over. Of course she Loves Dora, so it was a good pick. By the way, she Loves my Kindle

I have been following Homeschooling for College Credit/Jennifer Cook-DeRosa Facebook page and blog for several years. I have the utmost respect for the homeschooling community, however, my 4 children are attending or graduated from public school. I applied the concepts and strategies to help them maximize credits earned while in high school through AP exams, and more importantly with CLEP exams in the "young adult" phase of 17-20 to increase their success and minimize my cost. Eldest just won a Phi Theta Kappa scholarship for 3 classes at Harvard University Extension School, after earning her associates degree with honors from our local community college (75% earned by AP/CLEP exams). The concepts present can help ALL students--the high achieving and motivated , the self directed learners, those who struggle with learning challenges, those interested in a trade/skill rather than a 4 year university and those considering military options. The research and information is broad and deep explaining the simple and the complex. Even though I was familiar with many of the concepts already from the blog and FB page, I could barely put the book down when it arrived. You do NOT need to be homeschooling for high school credit to benefit from this book--the price is well worth it for any parent in understanding the parts of college that no other "college" book bothers to explain. I have a shelf full of "how to get into college" type of books---they are more alike than different. This book is unique--contains well curated and organized information that is hard to find on your own-- easily worth 10x the price! Bargain at under $20.

To give a bit of background for my review, I am a college professor at a small-liberal arts university. In addition, i am a homeschooling dad. My three oldest children all earned college credit at home before "going to college." In fact, one of my children earned an associates degree at the age of 17. I believe that I have a good grasp of earning college credit in a homeschool program.I just read Homeschooling for College Credit from cover to cover. This book is filled with information on how college credit can be earned INEXPENSIVELY at home. Moreover, parents don't need to have a college degree to guide their children towards earning credit. Even veteran homeschoolers will learn a few things - Jen's research is extremely extensive. For instance, I did not know about NYU's language exams.Moreover, the price of the book is extremely reasonable. For a little under $16, you will find tips that will save you thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars in tuition costs.

I read the first edition of the book and now the second. The second is way better than the first and completely overloaded with si much wonderful information! This will be revolutionary for the homeschool mom who is, like me, teaching a child-student who is in high school, nearing adulthood, and who wants to go to college.If you think the only way for your child-student to get college credit is to go to college or to go to a high school early college or concurrent enrollment class, you are wrong. There are many ways to earn college credit. This book will show you what all of those are, and will break it down so that you can see which ones are more sure ways and which are less likely ways to get credit at the college your offspring will attend. This will teach you how to communicate with college staff so that you can get the correct answers more quickly.This book will help you very much in helping your child-student in getting ready for, knowing what to expect in, and beginning college with you as their guidance counselor. We can to this, moms! This book will help so many homeschool moms, it will be amazing. This book will change what others think about homeschooling and will help people to see homeschooling as a very viable way to do high school, prepare for college, and maybe get some college credit in homeschooling!

You absolutely won’t regret buying this book. It is a resource you will underline, highlight, dog ear, and probably spill your coffee on. Jennifer has a servant’s heart and tirelessly provides this information free on her blog and FB page. But the book is a gem because it provides the information in an organized manner all in one spot. Just buy it. 😄 And then join the Homeschooling for College Credit FB group for your state!

I found this book to be VERY informative! MOST people do not realize that you can test out of most of what is required in the first two years of college. People think it is too good to be true. I KNOW that its very real, but yet still not widely known. There may be some homeschool parents that are aware, but I doubt they have the many resources that this book provides. The internet does give us access to a lot of information, but you have to know where to start and what to ask. Again, many people do not have a clue. I have to strongly disagree with the two star review. I'm not sure what the reader was looking for as it sounds like she already had all the answers. For the rest of us this book is a true gem!!I would also like to add that although this is aimed toward those in high school who are homeschooled, it is great information for anyone wanting to earn a degree faster and less expensive than paying retail. A lot of people still do not realize that higher education is a BUSINESS and that it is VERY possible to earn a degree without thousand of dollars of debt.

This book is totally worth the money. She has great information and I now follow her on Facebook!!! I am so grateful for finding her and this information!

If I had known the information in this book I would have completed my own college degree decades earlier. With the help of this author, my daughter finished her Associates degree while still in high school (with a 4.0). This is the perfect guide to alternative methods of credit and earning a college degree.If you are looking for a great guide to earning college credit, or assistance building a home-school road map to save thousands of dollars on higher education for your child this is the book for you...highly recommended!
