I eagerly read Ruffling Society to learn more about Sarah and Lee, Victoria and Hayden, Richard, Christine, and her father General Gibbes at the end of the 19th century, the time when my grandparents were newly married. And then, of course, Mrs. Bellows is there too. The sudden, new dilemmas confronting these Riverford citizens could overwhelm anyone.Conflicts of Old South traditions of society, their servants, and Old World expectations of the immigrant community versus the emerging independence and ambitions of the young ladies continue to make life challenging. Social discrimination, summer heat, and health problems continue to complicate these characters’ lives. Sarah’s new friends and professors provide both help for and unwanted distractions from achieving her teaching and romantic goals.I thoroughly enjoyed Ruffling Society, because the people are realistic, engaging, sometimes frustrating, and fallible. This book was especially fun for me to read, because I know teachers in Texas, I have ridden a train all the way across Texas and into Colorado, I have camped in tents, and I have hiked in spectacular mountains.Well done, Kay Moser. I had excitedly awaited this book, after reading the first book in the Aspiring Hearts Series, Skirting Tradition. It was worth the wait, from beginning to end . Historical Fiction is my favorite. This book, as well as Skirting Tradition, centers around strong women who are changing the world, while keeping their strong faith in God, they know that they know, that they know, that God is always with them, wherever they go. Through college, through illness, through death, through exciting travels and adventures from Texas to Colorado. I can't wait for the next book in the series! Kay Moser is an amazing writer.

Ruffling Society: This is the second book in the series although there is a novella called, Christine's Promise, that begins the series. This book starts out with Sarah graduating from college and saying goodbye to her family and friends to head off to Boulder, Colorado to attend a summer with other teachers at an exclusive teacher's retreat. There are some new characters introduced in this book and the wonderful array of characters from previous books. Kay Moser just can't write this series fast enough for me. I sobbed at the end of the book and that isn't a spoiler as it in no way gives anything remotely away. There is something about the characters and the sweet comments they make that touches my heart. I recognize that I have just lost a very close member of my family to cancer and that has left me more vulnerable. However with Kay, the author, writing such tender lines as "only God goes with you into your darkest nights," I quietly cried into my pillow many nights as I read this and other passages that helped me in my "darkest nights." I can recommend this wonderful book and the entire series starting with Christine's Promise, Skirting Tradition and now this one. Clean Read.

Loved this book. It tells the story through Sarah's eyes of the struggles of our young women teachers who also wanted a family, when only single women could teach. In this case Sarah was the daughter of a poor Czech immigrant family who struggled just to get an education with the goal of becoming a teacher. She fought bigotry and poverty, with only her mother at home to encourage her. Along the way, while seeking employment as a teenager to help her family, she met several strong, influential women who took her under their wings and guided her along the way.

Absolutely loved this book. The first chapter grabs you by setting up the conflict between social normals of the time and what is evolving and also conflicts within Sarah about career and family. You will see Christian principles in action by the three friends that are devoted to each other. Woven throughout the story line are Christian truths. By the end of the book you will see how God provides for us long in advance of our need.

This sequel to “Skirting Traditions” was well waiting for! The author brings historical background into the story with vivid descriptions of travel destinations. I could visualize the people, places and almost feel the air. Starting out in my Texas area, I knew the the places mentioned. The characters drew you in to their lives and you cheered, cried and gasped at their adventures! My heart skipped a beat several times and I loved the spiritual references. I didn’t want the story to end and hope it does continue on to book III!

What another delightful book about the Riverford women struggling to be respected for their self-worth. Three wonderful women striving to gain acceptance in a man's world. Sarah, an immigrant, graduating from college and looking forward to teaching. These ladies are defiantly "Ruffling Society". You immediately identify with the characters and compelled to experience all the emotions of each. Loved the book! Looking forward the next one. So refreshing to see the beautiful ladies portraying God's love to all people. An expiring story of individual concerns for others.

About the Author

Dr. Charles Ghilani is a Professor of Engineering in the B.S. Surveying Engineering and A.S. Surveying Technology programs at Penn State. He holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a B.S. degree in mathematics and education from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He has been involved in education since 1974; teaching at various levels from elementary through graduate school. Dr. Ghilani has received numerous awards including: a Campus Innovation Award (1991) and Professional Development Award (1994), P.S.L.S. presidential commendation in 1990, Outstanding Club Advisor in 1992, a Distinguished Service Award from the Pennsylvania Society of Land Surveyors in 1995, an American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) fellowship (1999), and the Earle J. Fennell Award (2001) for outstanding service in surveying and mapping education from ACSM. He is a member of the graduate faculty at Penn State and University of Maine. Dr. Ghilani is a member of the American Congress of Surveying and Mapping, the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, the Wisconsin Society of Land Surveyors, and the Pennsylvania Society of Land Surveyors. Ok text book

Helped me pass this course

This book is the same as the hardcover in every way except 2. The page numbers don't match up as the preface is numbered instead of Roman numerals and the problems at the end of each section are not the same at all.

This text has a huge amount of content and I can be very informative. It is up to date, with lots of modern information. Unfortunately, it can be verbose to the point of confusion. That's true, especially with topics that are unfamiliar to the reader. Lots of time is spent referencing other chapters and sections, giving this student some mild whiplash. Halfway through my class now and every reading assignment is becoming more of a chore than the last.

This textbook is so helpful. Each chapter explains everything in detail and presents plenty of examples. It has all the formulas separately so it's easier to take notes on them. The language is very clear and easy to understand. This book is a great help if you have a teacher who confuses you. I recommend it.

content is well portrayed and very easy to understand. but there were multiple numerical errors as well as incorrect answers in the answer key. for the price of this book it should not have any issues. I would recommend renting over buying this edition

This book! This book! This book! Wow! I'm not saying this in a mean way, but a lot of historical Christian novels are just plain cheesy. They are the same story, with a slightly different setting, But "The Mark of the King" by Jocelyn Green is in a standard all it's own. It's rich in details that dare to "go there." It's not all wrapped in a pretty bow, it can be rare & beautiful all at the same time! This is the first time that I have read any of her work & if her other books are anything like this, I have truly been missing out!"The Mark of the King" is such an unique setting & one that I'm sure most are not familiar with. It begins in Paris, France in 1719 with a young midwife Julianne. She finds herself in a situation that lands her prison. In order to hopefully find freedom & her brother. She trades her life in prison to exile to the French colony in America.And I'm not going to spoil anything else, because the element of surprise is what is so good about this book!I rarely read a book & think it should be turned into a film or TV series...But this one should!I received this book from Bethany House for my honest review.

This was the first book I have read by Jocelyn Green, and I chose it because of my love for historical fiction. While I relearned a great deal (most of it negative) about the French and their first settlements in Louisiana, the graphic violence and torture depicted throughout the book were just too depressing for me. There were few moments when I was glad I was reading this novel, and that is unusual for me. While the Christian aspect was present in some characters, the cruelty and violence of the era as depicted in this story seemed overwhelming, and continued throughout the book. I wouldn't recommend this book to any of my book-loving friends, because I truly did not enjoy reading it myself. Even though I considered not finishing it several times, something I rarely do, I kept on reading to the end... and frankly was glad when it was over. Now I hope I can eventually erase some of the more violently depicted scenes from my memory.

Five stars because this riveting story gripped my heart, interest, and imagination. Five stars for diligent research. Five stars for accurately portraying the Mississippi basin setting at New Orleans. Five stars for well developed and believable characters. Five stars for transporting the reader into another era. Five stars for discretely and carefully weaving a faith component into this book. Five stars for believability and discretion in dealing with sensitive topics and scenes. This reviewer heartily recommends "The Mark of The King" for young and older adults alike. A word of caution to those with tender sensibilities, this book contains necessary violence and does accurately describe early frontier war practices, some being rather bloody.The only steamy element is the temperature along the Louisiana bayou. Jocelyn Green has done it again with a great historical read.

The Mark of the King, is a historical fiction from the Christian fiction genre. There are some Christian fiction that just doesn't give me the emotional depth I love in a story but this book proved differently. The story and characters sent me through a gamut of emotions from the beginning to the end.The reader follows Julianne's life from France to the Louisiana territory found at the mouth of the Mississippi River during the early 1720s. Julianne is a midwife in France who becomes sentenced to a women's prison due to being falsely accused of murder. True to the times, Julianne is branded with a fleur-de-lis so to bear the mark of the king of France. This branding was a life sentence that meant she was owned by the king and he could do what he wanted with her. She was exempt from capital punishment to be the midwife for the women's prison.Also true to history, the French government both allowed and forced convicts to leave France for the French territory to help populate and colonize the area. Julianne traded her life sentence of prison for freedom in the French territory. Her only living family member, her brother Benjamin, was already in Louisiana so Julianne's decision was partly to find and be re-united with him.Though Julianne found legal freedom, the brand on her arm didn't provide a life of freedom. That brand was the symbol of human judgment for the great sin she was accused of and the people around her didn't let her forget it resulting in further unjust judgment, resentment and more punishment. But there was one man, Marc-Paul, who saw her as a daughter of The King and wanted to show her the grace she deserved not only from a fellow sinner as himself but also from her Heavenly Father."He followed the law, he stayed alive by the law, and he punished those who broke it. But ever since he met Julianne Chevalier, a hunger for something more had grown in him. Grace. He craved grace. For her, and for himself."Julianne's story continues as she tries to live in the unforgiving, tough, rugged Louisiana territory while overcoming her own demons the mark of the king brought upon her. Just when you think she has suffered enough, her heart is broken again. Emotional, raw heartbreak."Loss had fallen three times upon her, three cruel blows to the same raw heart that had not had time to heal from the last."Through much heartache and through grace, Julianne finally overcomes the mark of the king."God owes you nothing, and yet He made you His daughter. You are a child of the King; it is His image you bear. King Louis marked you with judgment, but the King of Kings covers you with grace. Whose mark will you now display?"This story is based on historical events of the time mixed with mild fictional romance. I learned much of the Louisiana territory that I had not known. I now have a simple idea of how New Orleans and the people there came to be. But not only does this book teach history, it teaches God's grace in even among the most cruel injustices one can experience here on Earth.For the sensitive reader there several elements to be aware of: while there are no sexual scenes, there are implied ones. There is detailed punishment through public flogging that may be a bit gory for some. There's also detailed war peril from Native American attacks. The reader will experience scenes of infant loss and scenes of child birth. There is no vulgar language. There is one circumstance at the end I found to be a bit too coincidental as part of the ending but full of suspense even so.I cried, I smiled, I continued reading with great anticipation of what was about to happen. The book drew me in from the beginning and held me captive till the end. This book will be one my favorites list and one of my favorites for this year.(I think the cover is beautiful, too.)

 Cheese balls are just so darn retro, aren’t they? Well, if you’re a Millenial you just might remember a family member putting them on a holiday table. Personally, I never made any until now, but always used to snag a port wine cheese ball to have in the fridge for when company came. Making cheese balls can be a tradition-building event in any family. I have some very fond memories of having a little one help me out with my baking. The recipes in this book span a wide array of tastes and can either be a solo or shared creative venture.The book itself is a small one at 6” x 8”, but chock full of great recipes. The covers are quite heavy like a kid’s board book and the binding is flexible. When I was preparing my cheese ball of choice, the book lay flat on the counter. A real plus for me so I could read and work at the same time. The book has sewn-in, glued pages that won’t be falling out anytime soon. Enough about the book itself ... on to the cheese balls. I browsed the book for quite some time before choosing one I wanted to make.There is a wide variety from Cookie Dough and Jalapeño Popper to Spicy Mango. The book is set up for many different occasions: Crowd-Pleaser, Afternoon Snacks, Fresh Flavors, Holiday Statements, and Evening Affairs. This is a very readable book and starting in the beginning was a learning experience, one I used. There’s a mini-tutorial entitled “Cheese-Scaping” where one can learn to make the cheese ball into that delectably delightful round ball, learn how to toast nuts, how to work with cheese logs (drizzled toppings), and making “cheese balls that blur the lines between spread and ball.”The variety was mesmerizing and the hardest part was choosing which cheese ball I wanted to make. One thing for certain is that one of my strongest recommendations is to use decent ingredients, shying away from off brands. Why go through all the trouble to chance having a cheese ball that tastes horrible? Philadelphia Cream Cheese was my go-to cream cheese and then I gathered the rest of my ingredients. I had a lot of the ingredients for on hand to make a Trail Mix cheese ball and decided to make one. I opted for a leisurely experience rather than a rushed one, but probably most of these cheese balls do land in the “quick-to-prepare” category.The Trail Mix cheese ball is great for those individuals who tend to stick closer to the plant based diet than others. I wasn’t preparing a cheese ball for any particular event, but chose this one so I can nibble on it during the day. Plenty of protein to be had in this cheese ball for sure! At any rate, I had a lot of fun making the Trail Mix cheese ball. One minor suggestion, when shaping the cheese ball would be to go back in during the chilling process and continue to reshape it. Everyone will have a different experience as this book does allow for a bit of creativity and some flexibility in ingredient selection. I ordered this book to help better understand my own motivations and those of others that I might not share.The chapters are extremely well organized with information broken down into multiple sub sections with their own headers which makes it really fast to go back and find something you wanted to re reference.Each chapter ends with a summary which is great for fast recall. The book also has practical examples on how one can manage motivation that are better than any self head book out there.Extremely useful sourced material that is fun and easy to read. Love this book.

Great text book, text is thick so do not try reading chapters for a quiz or exam the day before it. Provides examples for topics in each chapter that make it easier to understand and relate to experiences in life.

I wanted to give this book a fair chance and not jump to conclusions based on others ratings, but it is INCREDIBLY dry and boring. I have an immensely hard time not falling asleep while reading it. It was really hard to get through. I have read many other texts for school, and many of them are dry and hard to read. However, this one takes the cake. I don't know if it the cadence, lack of color, lack of interesting graphics, or block style with no breaking up of text. Whatever it is, it just drones on seemingly forever. if you have to read it you have to read it, but be prepared with a lot of sleep and coffee when you sit down to read this beast.

This book is terribly boring. Even for a textbook. The information is redundant. Instead of reading the chapter, just read the summary of the chapter at the end.

This was a most excellent psychology text. I read the first edition in college and it was a huge influence on me. Reading this edition was very impactful. I couldn't put it down. It's well written and easy to read. The information content is central to living a fullfilling and happy life and is pretty easy to apply. His stressing of intrinsic motivation throughout the book is an important message for our society.

I purchased this book for my elective class for my Master's degree as a required reading but loved it so much I am sending it to my mother to read for enjoyment purposes as well. It is not only a text book but has some great insights as to what to do to just help you change your own way of thinking and living and how to motivate yourself and others on the job and in life in general. It is easy to read, grabs your attention, and keeps you captivated. It is not like reading a text book at all. This book will stay on my shelves for a lifetime.
