I have cooked for my husband and children for 39 years. A lot of the recipes were "no brainers" for me. But there were also a lot of good recipes for me to try as well. I don't like to use dates a lot. There were enough recipes without dates for me. I would buy the book again. It is of value in my cook book collection. I think my 25 yr old daughter would get more out of it than me. Its not one of my favorites. But I would definitely consider buying other cook books by them. I think they will only get better!

This is a really great Paleo resource or anyone who is gluten/grain free. I would highly recommend it. I will mention a couple of cautions in the hopes it might help people. Their "sweets" do have natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup. They taste just as good as "real" treats which means it can be easy to eat too many of them so if you are trying to lose weight you might want to stick to the rest of the cookbook and save the treats for holidays. Also, they use a lot of coconut milk in recipes and I am personally allergic to coconut. I know this is not necessarily common, but I wanted to bring that up as well.Overall it's a truly outstanding book with great directions and beautiful pictures!

So I actually just made my first thing from this ebook. I greatly prefer hadcopies of cookbooks but I own Make It Paleo II and love it so when the sale came up I jumped on this. And as expected I haven't really used it... EXCEPT my hubby always wants carrot cake for his birthday. So I went on a hunt through all my various books for the perfect carrot belly-ache free carrot cake. And can I say it was worth the purchase just for this alone. We did share a little bit the night of his birthday but after brief discussion of the ingredients he decided that it totally qualifies as breakfast :). And as I was on the search I spotted several other things I intend to try if I remember to look on my ipad.

The authors did a mostly nice job of giving us workable recipes (and certainly beautiful photos of them) and creative ideas. If you are looking to restore or maintain your health by your eating habits and choices this book should be on your "go to" list. As a nutritional consultant, I do see a lot of people struggle to remove the sugary/starchy/grain foods from their diet that are the main source of health problems. Simply switching to an "approved" sugar like maple syrup or raw honey is not really the answer, although certainly better then corn or cane. By including such a vast chapter on sweets, this book in my mind gives the impression that sweets can be part of every day or even every meal when we all need to cut waaay back. But if you keep that in mind, you can enjoy better health by following a true Paleo diet and the other recipes in this book are helpful and delicious.

the best paleo book out there, in my opinion. It has a huge picture for each recipe, which I need when cooking. The recipes are also relevant to normal foods. The desserts, though, are fantastic. I love this book more than any other one.

I was excited to receive this book, and at a lower price than at our local chain bookstores; the recipes are good - easy to follow instructions and wonderful pictures. However, after receiving the book, I went on the authors' website and was very disappointed to find that ALL of the recipes were duplicates of recipes on their website that you can access for FREE. I actually went through every recipe in the table of contents and compared to the recipe list on their website. Each one was included on their website. The website actually has more recipes than the book. Kudos to them for having a good website, but save yourself some money and just get the recipes online instead!

I do like that this cookbook has pictures, but I agree with other reviewers; the pictures are actually TOO much eye candy. I love pictures in a cookbook, but I want the pictures to function not just as a visual enhancement but as an aid to how to prepare the foods. The recipes are nice, but there could have been two recipes per some pages instead of just one giant picture and recipe. Also, the book is large and awkward to hold. It's an okay book, but I was surprised to be disappointed. I did so want to like it more. I will keep it, and I will use the recipes, but the new trend toward coffee table cookbooks is not my thing.

A lovely book, and I am glad I bought it because it has nice recipes in it. Lots of pictures, and a very pretty book to have on your bookshelf. But, the first 50 pages the authors talk about themselves, some of the recipes are very complex using up the better part of two pages, and the book is heavy so is not easy to have laying aaround the kitchen when cooking out of it. I sometimes xerox just the page I need that has the recipe on it that I want. Then I scotch tape the page on my cupboard door to look at as I measure out the ingredients. Not my best purchase, but I do use it occasionally.

This edition by Norton republishing Patricia Highsmith's second novel, The Price of Salt, or Carol as later titled by the author, is worth its higher price than the other Kindle editions available that are fraught with typos and amateurish typesetting. I imagine most who are checking out reviews here have either already seen the movie Carol (based on the book) or plan to see the movie yet wish to read the book first. I had already read an earlier edition of The Price of Salt prior to seeing the movie recently. I'm glad I've invested in this Norton edition as it includes interesting and informative commentary from Highsmith shedding light into the backstory of her writing the novel mid-20th century in the first place.For me, reading the book and experiencing the movie are a complete package. Like two persons who belong together, words well written and images well framed can be better appreciated than partaking of one without the other.In terms of the novel, Highsmith's prose does a wonderful job of developing its characters, particularly the character Therese who is the story's protagonist. The novel is clearly written from Therese's point of view. It is a coming-of-age story about Therese and her experiences that lead her to falling in love with an older woman, Carol, who is in the midst of getting a divorce. Carol is torn between her love for her daughter, named Rindy, and her attraction and growing romantic love for Therese that puts Carol's relationship with her young daughter at risk. It is a dark story at times fraught with immense tensions and conflicts acutely felt but forcibly suppressed by certain characters as it takes place within the early 1950s. Such is a a time when same-sex attraction was considered both pathological and criminal if acted upon, and the novel's dialogue and narrative must be seen within this repressed societal context of the day. The novel is quite revolutionary for its time, carrying a somewhat ambiguous though positive ending for the two women in love rather than the typical tragic one, and the story continues to be relevant even today. The movie, as brilliantly directed and supurbly acted by all of its cast, and with its own rich historically accurate reproduction and visualization, has a few changes to the original plot that for me, work. I would say if you read the novel before seeing the movie, you will experience the movie more as an insider who recognizes these changes as something complimentary to Highsmith's story. By watching the movie, you can appreciate having greater insight into Carol's part within the story.All said, the novel Carol is a worthy read for anyone who wants to read a complex yet ultimately uplifting love story that happens to be between two women who do not fit into the stereotypes for lesbian relationships of any period.

If you're like me, you know Patricia Highsmith from her Ripley crime novels. But Highsmith, writing under a pseudonym, also wrote this groundbreaking 1950s study of one woman’s sexual awakening. The release of the Hollywood adaptation, under the title “Carol,” has brought this often overlooked novel the attention it deserves. Even 60 years after its initial publication, “The Price of Salt” remains as relevant, powerful and compulsively readable as ever.The story centers around Therese, a 19-year-old aspiring set designer who suffers from a severe disconnect with the world around her and from her own identity. On the surface, she seems happy: She has a devoted boyfriend, Richard, and just got a temporary job at a department store to make some extra cash. But something’s missing from Therese’s life – something she herself can’t exactly define. (There’s a nice bit about the various ways to pronounce Therese’s name that sums up her confusion: “She was used to a dozen variations, and sometimes she herself pronounced it differently.”)Enter Carol, a mid-30-something upper-class housewife and mother who comes across as glamorous, beautifully unattainable, and moody. After they meet in the department store where Therese works, the two feel a “sudden release, that leap of response in both of them, as if their bodies were of some material which put together inevitably created desire.”As the first part of “The Price of Salt” traces Therese and Carol’s “will they or won’t they?” relationship and the second sends them on the lam, so to speak, on a cross-country road-trip, Highsmith’s background in crime fiction serves her well. A shady detective, a conflicted boyfriend, and a mysterious friend from Carol's past all add to the tension.Like the best of Highsmith's novels, "The Price of Salt" doesn't shy away from the more problematic aspects of its own story. For instance, the age difference between the main characters is mentioned a number of times. (Imagine if this novel were about a heterosexual relationship between a man in his mid-30s and a 19-year-old girl.) The novel also explores Highsmith’s preoccupation with identity and, in this case, love's apparent contradiction: even as Therese finds her true self, she loses her identity in Carol's or, as Therese reflects, "she felt like an actor, remembered only now and then her identity with a sense of surprise, as if she had been playing in these last few days the part of someone else, someone fabulously and excessively lucky" in love.In the end, this shouldn't be categorized as a lesbian love story. It's a beautifully realized and meditative novel of one young woman finding the courage to "plunge headlong" into life and love. That's something anyone can relate to.

A must read for winegrowers. Mr Ohmart is practical and is a very good writer. quick service.

The only problem remaining is, securing the funds for the land for a vineyard! Excellent advice, once you have the land.

This book is long on abstractions and short on practical advice.When I read "sustainable," I thought the author might give practical advice on holistic management specific to grape growing. Instead he gives lip service to "holistic" methods and suggests that it is good enough to be on a holistic trajectory. While one might agree with that, he only provides abstractions on how to get there.The book seems mainly aimed at corporate owners of large vineyards who need some persuasion towards "sustainable" thinking. Those with smaller vineyards would probably be happier with more specific advice.When I saw that the author was an entomologist I thought it was reasonable to expect some specific advice regarding "sustainable" pest management specific to grape growing. Instead, I see such "helpful" notes as ""Vineyard spraying is something that almost every grape grower will do multiple times during the year no matter whether they farm organically, biodynamically, or “conventionally.” That is because most varieties of grapes are very susceptible to one or more diseases, no matter where they are grown in the US." And the author also helpfully notes that good operators will see that the job is done properly, or something to that effect. There is *no* practical advice that one might expect from an entomologist.For anyone interested in sustainable grape growing on a smaller scale, much more useful information can be found in The Holistic Orchard: Tree Fruits and Berries the Biological Way. Granted, MIchael Phillips is much more into apples than into grapes, but the casual mention of grapes is more helpful from a sustainable/holistic perspective than this book. Ohmart does cover row orientation and a bit about vine spacing, but that information is easily available on the internet. (Phillips' book costs 4x as much but is more than 10x as valuable. I'm returning the Ohmart book.)I should also mention that the author's point of reference is Lodi, California, and there's little practical reference to anywhere else on the planet.

Not all bad. I am currently working on getting back into a running program having taken a couple years off from my last marathon. I have trained using Hal's novice programs in the past with success for 5k, 10k, half and Marathon. This book seems to focus mostly on the basics of running and how to accomplish a marathon for the beginner. There are good reminders and suggestions (though somewhat vague) for how to stay on track with your training and where to start if it feels overwhelming. That being said, I'm not sure that this book gave me enough to accomplish my PR goals. There is too much that is left up to the reader to decide what is right for them, and I am finding it hard to sort through all of the information and what I actually need to be doing. Moral of the book seems to be that there is more than one way to train for a marathon and hard work and perseverance are key. The quotes and opinions of other runners and coaches that Hal mentions seem contradictory and confusing at times. There is very little nutritional advice in this book, and what is there is repetitive.One think that kind of bothered me about the book is that Hal keeps mentioning his accomplishments and experience in a constant, casual kind of way, like he feels he needs to keep reminding the reader that he is in fact an expert in the field. I wish he would just list the accomplishments at the beginning or end of the book like a CV and move on. If I didn't trust his knowledge, I wouldn't have bought the book. I do agree with the comments that say there is some outdated information and a lot of unnecessary 'fluff'. The book also includes some unnecessary speculation on women's involvement in running, saying that women are running more because it is 'trendy' was a bit condescending. Chapter 15 is unnecessary and sould be removed. Seriously Hal, take it out. It talks mostly about how a woman's period makes it harder for her to train and even implies that women are less competitive than men. There are alternative plans in the chapter for if your delicate and non-competitive female body is unable to handle the rigors of marathon training (note the sarcasm). In my experience, everyone will experience a setback or a bad week at some point in their training, not sure why the women where called out specifically.

I really enjoyed this book. It gives very detailed instruction in all facets of a marathon (stretching to recovery). The book also provides training plans for novice, intermediate and advanced. I'm currently using the training plan for Chicago Marathon in October.

This year I did the Chicago Marathon. I needed a book which will give me advise on physical and mental techniques to meet my goal of finishing the marathon as a new runner. This book was not it. I think that this book is for people who are regular runnings and have done multiple running races. For brand new runners I would recommend the “The Non-Runner’s Marathon Trainer” by David A.Whitsett, Forrest A.Dolgener, and Tanjala Mabon Kole. I followed that booked and was able to meet my goal of completing the 2016 Chicago Marathon.

I have purchased this book 4 times. I lent my first two copies to friends and they were never returned for a reason. I finally got wise and purchased a Kindle copy. This is my running bible. I have followed Hal Higdon's advice from the first day I decided to try running 4 years ago at the ripe old age of 43. I went from 5ks to 10ks to 15ks and 3 half marathons. I'm currently training for my first marathon because of Hal's sound and very wise advice. He has never steered me wrong. This book covers it all for runners of every level. I highly recommend this book to every runner - new or seasoned. Every time I read it, I learn something new. Run like Hal.

He's a good story teller and I'd like him as my coach - I think I'd succeed with his plans. I appreciate that he does both a high level view and then takes a step back and breaks it down should you need it. I also thought the chapter layout made sense with respect to race training.I don't feel this was as good as his half marathon book, and some of his tables just don't translate well to the Kindle format. Although updated, too much of the info dates to when the internet is new and explanations such as what posting to his website should be removed.

Was recommended this book by my physician who has run marathons for years and was just recently in the Boston marathon. I love it so far! It's so informative of not only what days and how long you should be training but also the background of marathons, the complexity of the cellular breakdown when running, what foods you should be eating and avoiding etc. It mentally prepares you to train!

I bought this for my 22 year old daughter as a Christmas gift who is running her 1st marathon in April. She read it in 2 weeks and raved about how great the book was and what valuable insight it provided - little things that she would have never thought about! She absolutely loved it and is currently in training! Great book and resource! Seller delivered product on time and as promised!

I chose that rating because it is okay. It is very simple and basic. It allows for anyone to consider a marathon. Even if you have never run a race. Oh Hal says he wouldn't recommend it but he is not going to tell you no. So, if you think you can, go ahead and try. His running plans are very conservative and I find it hard to believe that you could achieve a PR on any one of these plans. I like and respect the man and what he has done for running but the book is too basic if you are serious about running a serious marathon with a PR pace. If you are out to just finish, this is the book for you.

Laura Ingalls Wilder's books tell a story that is both true and misleading, the product of a strange and tortured collaboration between Laura and her daughter Rose. Told in full, it would have been a tale full of misery, mistakes and tragedy, relieved by stoic endurance and loyalty. It wouldn't have been published. Wilder struggled to turn her family's pioneer story into the inspiring, heart-warming, heroic tale that fills the Little House books. Caroline Fraser adds context beyond the much-discussed question of the true authorship of the books, placing the pioneer epic in the larger frame of conflicts between settlers and Indians, and North and South, then exploring the later role of the pioneer story in the politics and myth-making of the nation and the world. The reaction against Wilder's books that has led to her name being taken off at least one school named in her honor shocks the books' fans, but Fraser shows how Rose used the stories for her own political purposes, and the US promoted them as propaganda after World War II. Wilder herself slanted the books to bolster the image of the settlers as an ideal model for America. And yet, Fraser's affection for the books and their author shows through her admission of their myopic worldview, omissions, and outright fabrications. Her sympathies clearly lie with Laura rather than with Rose, and she provides evidence against later claims that Rose was the true author of the books.The surprises of the book for me are in the details of Rose's life and politics and how she leveraged Laura's books to further her Libertarian views, even beyond her death.My own grandmother was born in a log cabin in Wisconsin, and she married my grandfather, whose family homesteaded not far from Walnut Grove. Another grandfather was born in a sod house in Nebraska. My mother grew up in circumstances as difficult as much that Wilder described. When Wilder presents the pioneer story while minimizing or totally ignoring the plight of the displaced and murdered Native Americans, she is telling the tale as my family would have told it. Fraser expands the view to encompass what we must admit if we are honest: our success and wealth were built on the suffering of real people. These sections of Fraser's book aren't comfortable to read, but they are necessary to put the controversy about Wilder's books in context.Fraser doesn't hide her own political leanings, as she weaves her rejection of Ayn Rand's philosophy into the discussion of Rose's friendship with Rand and Rose's editing of Laura's later books to introduce Randian themes. I found that enlightening and interesting. Some people won't agree.Read this book if you are a fan of Wilder's books. If you know Wilder only from the TV series, read Wilder's books first. (I thoroughly enjoyed Fraser's take-down of the TV series, which I never saw but did read about.)I enjoyed Prairie Fire. It didn't make me dislike Wilder's books, or even have a lower opinion of Laura - - though it certainly didn't make me like Rose. I'm giving it four rather than five stars because of a little discomfort with how openly the author's biases, most of which I actually share, are expressed.

I have no argument with Fraser's research skills and that is why I gave her two stars rather than one. However, I find huge fault with the very premise of her research. How convenient for her to assail the Ingalls' family for their lack of "politically correct" sensibilities when it was our greatest American President, Abraham Lincoln who urged American settlers to go West with the Homestead Act. This book inspired the American Library Association to strip the name "Laura Ingalls Wilder" from its award, renaming it the Children's Literature Legacy Award. And why? Because of the "inconsistency between Wilder’s legacy and its core values of inclusiveness, integrity and respect, and responsiveness through an award that bears Wilder’s name." It is a little incongruous that any body would apply 21st century values to those of the 19th century, but worse than that, Laura clearly was the most inclusive of individuals who discussed her sadness over the lot of the American Indians. Whom next does Fraser wish to destroy? Would anyone like to do a deep dive on her? I hope so!

I am a Wilder fan, having visited her home twice, taught her books many times, and been quotingly familiar with them since the age of seven. Every time I read any of them to a child, I am still charmed by the truly mesmerizing prose. Whoever spun them, Laura or Rose, they are timeless and a joy. I have also read all their other published writings and assorted articles and biographies. I know the subject.This book is long, with nearly a hundred pages of small print endnotes, to boot. I devoured it all. It starts strong, giving an account of the Minnesota Massacre, alluded to in one book where Ma quickly turns the conversation to protect little ears--smart move, Ma Ingalls. This author gives us all the back stories and national context we as adult readers want and need. She does explore the push, pull, and tug between Laura and Rose.After all this valuable light brought to our subject, which is a rocky life covering nearly a century, one comes away, if anything, even more impressed by the resilience of Laura Ingalls. Someway, she did pen her stories into the very best "good parts version" of a life journey that was decidedly mixed. And she did it, in league with her daughter, beginning in later life, in a farmhouse, on Big Chief nickel tablets that are a handicap to write on, besides.For the real fans among us, and there are many, this book is a delight, even as our hearts are wrenched by the whole truth. One may not read it fast, but one will read it, and learn a lot of American history into the bargain.

Mara Penny's illustrations make this book what it is. The content is great, don't get me wrong... I just can't imagine this book with any other artwork though. Buy this! You will not be disappointed.

This book is a pleasure to read. However, the author leaves you hanging in some areas. For example, she tells you that a broom is a very important tool, describes its purpose, but doesn’t tell you how to use it. Likewise, a 9’ braided red rope, it’s purpose, but not what to do with it. I wish it were more complete, because it is a beautiful book. A wonderful introduction to Wicca, just a little frustrating.

Lovely and simple spells, great for the beginner or advanced practitioner, or just for fun! The hardcover and illustrations are nice too.

This is a very practical book, indeed. You won’t find elaborate explanations, historical origins of the content, or even references. You will, however, find a wealth of practical eclectic Wicca-centric information on how to cast simple spells. And all wrapped up in the most aesthetically pleasing witchcraft book I’ve ever owned.It does what it promises, and for someone who just wants an easy reference book for spells to cast, it’s perfect. Highly recommended for beginning witches.
