Alex Ross's artwork is fantastic. It is among the best the medium has to offer. I would rather look at his renderings of Batman, Superman and Captain Marvel more than any other artist. His depictions of them can often be bought at Comic Conventions for several thousand dollars.The story is a the typical JLA vs. Legion of Doom type story we have come to expect. Brainiac and Luthor combine forces and lead the villains to a temporary victory over the Justice League. They steal some of Batman's information that is on the JLA computer and use Batman's contingency plans to take down the league (this is derived from an older JLA story titled "Tower of Babel" that was written by Mark Waid). A couple of lucky breaks here and there and the heroes escape their different prisons and regroup. Led by the ingenuity of Batman, they figure out how to defeat the villains and restore order.The interesting twist on this story is that it begins with the villains taking a global, long-term view of how to solve the Earth's problems (a la Mark Grunewald's 1985 series, Squadron Supreme - they are Marvel's stand-in for the JLA). But it is quickly revealed that their interest in helping humanity is just a scam, and it devolves into the typical heroes vs. villains that we've read so many times.All that said, it is worth it for the art. Just don't expect any new twists on the age old battlefield.

Alex Ross and Jim Krueger (the creative team behind Marvel's Earth X) provide their spin on a classic Silver Age style story of the Justice League taking on the Legion of Doom. When Brainiac starts sending visions of an apocalyptic future to the leaders of the Legion of Doom, the various villains put aside their differences to band together and prevent the end of the world (something their visions show the Justice League being incapable of). As part of their plan, the Legion sows public mistrust against the League and eventually enacts multiple plans to either kill, control, or incapacitate the Leaguers. Pulling on a wide variety of characters aside from the main Trinity of DC (including Shazam, Elongated Man, Red Tornado, and Martian Manhunter), Ross and Krueger provide a similar treatment to the League that Alan Moore gave to Superman in his classic Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? The book is rooted in the Silver Age era and sensibilities, but is still a violent and dark story more at home with modern comics. Between Krueger's great narrative exposition and Ross' iconic painted panels the book is a tremendous read although as with other Ross classics the action sequences are a bit too static and hard to follow at times. Likewise, despite the absolute brutal take down of the League mainstays at the start of the story, pretty much every major character survives the book intact, bending the sense of believability even for a comic book (how Aquaman in particular survives isn't even properly explained).

I really like this graphic novel, there is just no way around it. The book just hits all the right chords with me, from its characterization of the heroes and villains to the well laid out plot.The story at its most basic is your classic Justice League versus Legion of Doom type scenario. The scheme cooked up by the villains this time leaves them feeling menacing without being ridiculous. The book features a large array of characters from various teams and uses most of them to great effect. Even smaller less well known heroes get their time to shine.The art of the book is breathtaking, showing an incredible level of detail and care that you just don't see in your usual monthly comics.Overall I have nothing bad to say about this book. If you are a fan of DC's heroes then you will probably find something to enjoy about this book.

In 'Justice' Alex Ross assembles nearly the entire DC universe to weave a grand tale in classic comic book style.The story begins with the major DC villains collectively experiencing the same dream of nuclear armageddon, one which the Justice League is completely unable to stop. To prevent this fate, the villains begin to work for the good of mankind, to the surprise of just about everyone. Of course, we soon find out there is more to this story than meets the eye.There are two notable things about this collection. The first is the artwork by Ross, mastermind behind 'Kingdom Come' and 'Marvels'. Ross consistently delivers the best artwork comics are capable of publishing. The second is the writing, which is highly idealistic in a way comics haven't been for decades. Now this does lead to one or two noticeable plot holes, and thus the one star off review, but it still a gripping, enjoyable sotory that I can recommend to any DC fan.

This review pertains to all three volumes of "Justice", since the three volumes comprise a single story.First of all, the artwork in "Justice" by Alex Ross and Doug Braithwaite is probably as good as it gets. These are paintings, not just illustrations, and the book is a feast for the eyes. Second, the story is pretty dark: it concerns an apocalyptic vision that a number of super villains have and which they understand as a prophecy of the end of the world to be caused by the Justice League, unless the villains can stop them. There's plenty of violence and disturbing images / elements, but the story isn't dull or facile by any means. It's not for everyone, though. It's darker than I enjoy, but again the artwork is so splendid and the tale is interesting enough that I'm glad I bought it and I'm glad I read it.

This team of writers and artists achieve a certain majesty in the DC characters which is unsurpassed.It's more than a graphic novel. The true depth of character from the words spokenAnd the realistic paintings elicit a dream in the reader that wow, these heroes could be, and very nearly are....REAL.And who doesn't wish for such?Much gratitude to all who make this read possible.Highly recommend.

I found this book disappointing. Even though companies are listed there is no mention if they hire contractor or employee status. Also many of the links seemed copied and pasted from job ads as when I clicked on them I was taken to pages that stated the job was no longer available. Also throughout the book the author plugs a webinar that costs $99. I felt a lot could have been added to make this book beneficial and I feel I receive much more information for free just by networking in various coding groups through social media.

It just give you a list of websites and things I know by just look up the program. I wish they would put thing in the books like a practice tests and thing you didn't know.

Very nice book. I love how organized all the information is. All the helpful companies. Wow there are so many.

About the Author

Geoff Hohwald began playing banjo in 1964 in Columbus, Ohio which was a "hot bed of bluegrass at the time. While there Geoff studied banjo under John Hickman. He performed with many other great musicians there including Bill Monroe s last two guitar players Tom Ewing and Wayne Lewis, Other Musicians that Geoff played with in the Columbus area were Red Allen, Sandy Rothman, Sid Campbell., Dave Evans , Frank Wakefield, Hylo Brown, Buddy Thomas, The Fields Brothers, Landon Messer, Earl Taylor and Brian Aldridge. Since coming to Atlanta Geoff has played with Bear Creek in Underground Atlanta, at the Alliance Theatre for the Robber Bridegroom, with the Atlanta Pops Orchestra, and is one of the founding members of the Greater Atlanta Bluegrass Band. Geoff is mostly known around the country for his banjo teaching materials which are sold world wide. He has been collecting vintage instruments for years and has owned or played all of the classic bluegrass instruments and has helped many musicians in the southeast area obtain classic instruments.

The Banjo Primer Deluxe is an OUTSTANDING choice for beginner banjo players - even those that have dabbled in it already. I originally used a DVD course that was ok and tried youtube, but Geoff Hohwald's is a MUST. I am an experienced guitar player and always wanted to try banjo. This course starts out explaining everything you SHOULD know first (i.e. the parts of the banjo itself, how to attach a strap, proper posture, tuning, banjo care, proper positioning of your hands/fingers for correct technique and efficiency, etc.) Other courses will jump right in and have you picking away without taking the necessary time to give you this important education about the instrument. He also provides you with a fantastic set of tips on "how to practice" - these tips apply to any instrument and I wish I had these at my disposal when I learned guitar! Worth the price alone. Seriously. I learned so much faster and more accurately as well. My playing cleaned up and flowed naturally. The Banjo Primer breaks down learning the banjo in simple, easy to follow steps at a very slow and manageable pace. Then in small intervals he speeds each one up gradually. Bit by bit, note by note you then begin to piece together full measures in sequence until eventually you are playing an entire song from start to finish. Then, and only then, does Geoff challenge you with 5 different speeds of backing tracks to jam along with a bluegrass band. He proves that ANYONE (any age, gender or experience) can play the banjo and play it well. If you have the ambition and follow along patiently, there is no doubt you'll be picking away like a pro in a very short amount of time with this course. I still can't believe how inexpensive it is for what you get. Loads of fun! Highly recommended.

Well worth the price! Geoff tells you everything you'd want to hear in a private lesson - hand position, fingering pitfalls, best way to practice. The instructional DVD brings it all to the learner with utmost clarity. I am at the first song on the first accompaniment cd which allows me to play, albeit slooowly, with musical backup. For me, a big bonus is that I can watch the DVD on a huge TV, and see the tab clearly. I am visually impaired. Geoff Hohwald is a great teacher. Edited to add: Hurry and get this edition while the CDs are available. "Online access" for the audio and video lessons doesn't help you when you either can't burn a CD or just don't have internet.

I've had a banjo for years. I also haven't been able to play the banjo for years. I had someone try giving me lessons and he didn't have patience, so I got discouraged and hung it up. Years later I decide to try again, read some reviews and bought this. I wish I would have purchased this with the banjo! Explained everything and clearly, now I can finally play. I haven't used the cds yet but do use the DVD. Anyone looking learn the banjo or those who gave it up from being discouraged, get this book. You will not be disappointed!

Worth every penny. I love how it works you up from simple finger movements to more complex instead of immediatley hitting you with a full F chord as another book does. Doesn't have you wade through a bunch of stuff that is merely nice to know. There are other books for that if you want to know the theory behind chords & scales, etc. The DVD and CD's are excellent. I think DVDs & CDs are the way to go over youtube stuff. It's very easy to have DVD and CD players repeat tracks for you and they don't require a good internet connection.

Really love this book, after buying many books or finding different videos this one is my favorite. The teacher Geoff is very nice and reminds you to be patient and keep going. Following the instructions makes so much sense and he explains how to do something, and counts out when your going to start, then as he plays the notes appear at the bottom with an indicator on the notes that are being played with. Because of this its very clear to play along with him. Everything is quite nice and I am really glad I found this free on amazon prime, but purchased it anyways because I wanted my own copy. Geoff has a website with additional books, one that is prior to this one that I've also found super helpful where its got a lot of tracks at different speeds so that you play along. I find it all very relaxing and satisfying to play along with the book.

This book is exactly what someone who has never played the banjo needs. It is like having your own private instructor who lets you move along at your own pace. I absolutely love it. I started to use another beginner book and wasted three months trying to learn the banjo. A lot of the things I wanted to learn were not in this book, but I found on YouTube. Once I received this book, I threw the other one away. After teaching art history in grad school at my university, I graduated and starting teaching at a local junior college in the Sacramento area. In my teaching curriculum, I not only liked to focus on art history or the basic elements of art, but also various methodologies. At the university level, I never experience any problems with these methodologies, in particular feminism. However, at the junior college there was a huge backlash to feminist theory along with many disrespectful comments which was something I found quite disturbing. As an educator, how can I not address the patriarchy in art? It seemed very irresponsible for me ignore it, plus why were my students resisting it so strongly when they were so quick to accept other theories such as Colonialism which shares many principles with feminism?When the semester ended I talked to a fellow professor in the English department about my experience. He (correctly) pointed out that feminism, while universally accepted in academia, is a contentious issue in the “real world”. Additionally, when he would broach this topic in his classes, he would not immediately say “feminism” but lead the conversation upon the idea of inequality which would eventually segue way to feminism because there is so much baggage associate with the term (something I learned the hard way).I realized my task was not to cut feminist theory from my course or to teach it as I had previously, but to make it more accessible to my student. Essentially to make my students see the true concept and not to bring damaging tropes along with their pre-existing notions. I have to say, after initially seeing my student’s reactions, it became entirely to clear to me that feminism needs to be more accessible to society at large. And I am baffled that this fight is still being fought.I threw myself into research but finally a tip came from an unlikely place. My younger sister in one of her classes was reading The Guerrilla Girl’s Bedside Companion to the History of Western Art so I began reading it and wow! I’m ashamed that after going to grad school there were artists in this book that I had never heard of and these artists were great! How had none of my classes or any of the books I read mention Pan Yuliang or Alma Thomas? I certainly knew many of the artists in the book, but it still came as a shock to find a good handful of those that I did not.The book is short, accessible, easy to read, good humored, but gets its point across and I appreciate a book that students at the 100 level can read and understand. I incorporated this book into my class the following semester and I have to say that feminism was easier to grasp and more students agreed with the concept. Not all of them did however and not all disrespectful comments here withheld but overall I am very happy with the results.I will continue to tweak this topic and work on slides, content, artists, and videos to help students along but this book stripped feminism down to the basics and brought humor with it and who can argue with that? I highly recommend this book as either a class aide or for some outside reading. Go for it.

Not a bad written book, it's just that I was hoping for something meaty and walked away with very little new information. I was excited because it was written by the guerilla girls, although being an art history major I should've realized that their audience was not meant to be someone who'd already read textbooks on feminist views of art history and artists.

The writers are activists for women in art. The cartoony character of the book, while whimsical, makes one wish for a larger book on the topic with more information. It's great as far as it goes.

I was at my university bookstore picking up my two art history courses' textbooks and I saw this book and my heart jumped! A year ago in my first 2-d design course my professor had told us all about the Guerilla Girls and I had just finished taking a sociology course that made me feel more inclined to female equality. Between my Sociology Now! textbook and reading this Guerilla Girls book, I feel more strongly and proud about my gender more than anything else and have analyzed so many situations in correlation to the subject.This book is a terrific resource for learning more about women's place in art throughout centuries. I was a bit disappointed that it didn't do more about statistics or criticism about how we are still underplayed in society, such as the famous 'MoMA Has 5%...' ad that I've seen just about everywhere. What about how we were perceived a hundred years ago? They speak about women's rights, what they can and could not do, comparatively to men and, though interesting, it's still not what I expected.Thus, this book is terrific as a reference or introduction to the history of female artists, one that you should have in your collection just because we are often (still) overlooked in the art world.

The Guerilla Girls simply have no equal; the book is genuinely fascinating, and also full of annoying tidbits of how the art world has worked against women artists throughout the ages; notably good artwork and layouts, which adds to the enjoyment of the read. I couldn't put it down. If you're a woman artist, this is a must-read: you need to know where you fit into "the big picture" so to speak.

Wonderful book, very educational and incredibly interesting to read, would highly recommend for anyone interested in art or amazing women

I was looking forward to Paula Hawkins new book. Unfortunately, it was so disappointing that I couldn't finish it. The switching between multiple characters made for a confusing read. Not any of the characters were relatable nor did I care about them at all.Don't waste your money.

The construction of this story is too heavy to allow flow. The story is told through the visions of so many people that you loose what it is all about. Definitively no comparison to her earlier work.

where is the real Paula Hawkins. this is a lot of gibberish. confusing characters and totally plodding.

Sorry, looked forward to this, but quit halfway due to too many characters, no guide to who they are or who they''re talking about (coz they're not engaged in any actions), it's a struggle to follow which timeframe each chapter is in.

Into the Water by Paula Hawkins was the book selected by my blog followers as my Book Bucket read for January 2018. Each month, I hold a poll where you can pick from 12 books I want to read, rotating a new one in and out each month. I was excited to read this one, but hadn’t read Girl on the Train before, so Hawkins is a new author for me. I enjoyed the book a great deal, despite a few areas that didn’t quite work for me, but I’d still recommend it to others as a strong thriller and suspense novel.The novel focuses on a small town in England, following a core set of about 10 characters. Chapters alternate to provide the history and perspective of multiple deaths in by drowning in a local river. It all begins with the death of a suspected witch from several hundred years earlier, culminating with a few deaths in modern times that could be suicide, accidental or murder. As each character shares parts of the story, readers learn what truly happened to each victim.Ignoring the historical murders, the current day plot is intricate. Several teenagers fight to be popular or earn respect while in high school. Sisters struggle to accept their differences with one another. Parents and children argue about parenting styles. Families are broken by affairs. Police detectives walk a fine line of doing the right versus the wrong thing. Each of the stories are weaved together in a way you can’t help but want to know all the connections. And there is, of course a ‘surprise’ twist in the end… which for many readers, probably won’t be a surprise.I’m primarily a plot reader, followed closely by character. The plot is definitely strong; however, at least 50% of the characters have some flaws or issues in how they were written. Keeping characters in the grey zone is important within a suspense novel; readers need to know that they might be missing part of the picture, but in the end, it should be clearer than it was in this book. For 3 characters, I felt like the actions didn’t quite match what we’d come to expect from the personalities we’d gotten to know – and it wasn’t due to the grey area. It felt like a totally new character had replaced the ones we’d spent attaching ourselves to. If there are connections we just failed to see because of how good the writing is, then I am OK with it. But if it feels disconnected, then I think the book fails a bit. That’s what I felt happened here… what started out as a 4.5 rating began going south as parts of the plot unraveled. It was clear the entire way that something wasn’t right with a certain character, yet the twist in the end doesn’t do any justice to ‘why’ certain things happened.All that said… as I kept turning the page, my interest was held and I liked many aspects of the book. I lowered my rating by 1 star because of how it seemed to fall apart in the end… ending somewhere between a 3.5 and a 3.75, rounded up to a 4 in the rating. I’ll keep reading Hawkins’ novels, but if another has a similar downturn, I might not stick with it.

Not only was i never riveted, I was so bored it took me weeks to get through it. The characters were undeveloped and unlikable and I have yet to figure out the point. What a waste of time and money.

I would have returned this book to Amazon but it was preordered and I didn't start reading it on the release date. Needs a rewrite! Too many characters. Confusing plot, running off into Neverland. I stuck it out only because (1) I couldn't return it, and (2) Girl on the Train was such a good read. What a disappointment! :-(

Sustainable Home Design by Chris Magwood is billed as “a complete guide to goals, options, and the design process,” and it does a pretty good job of delivering all of this. Designing any home is a major endeavor and designing one that would be considered sustainable is even more complex, because this introduces a fistful of criteria to filter through. This book helps with that filtering process.What is meant by “sustainable” varies with emphasis, and this is where each designer must decide which aspects are of paramount importance. The very first thing to do when setting out on this venture is to precisely define your goals and criteria, and this will guide all of your other choices. There is one long chapter that will help you make these decisions.Another chapter looks at rating systems and product guides that are popular in North America and Europe, such as LEED for Homes and Energy Star certification. The value of these systems and guides for helping with decision making is outlined. The book has developed a criteria matrix that can be used as a basis for evaluating the various aspects of house design.There is a fairly detailed chapter on building science basics, a topic that Magwood has written an entire book about. These considerations are very important for designing homes that are comfortable, durable and energy efficient.After goals and criteria have been established it is time to begin the design process, which ideally entails much careful thought and discussion before anything is committed to detailed plans. Many factors should be looked at, and Magwood suggests that developing a design team may be the best way to accomplish this. Whether you plan to engage in a total self design/build project or turn it all over to the professionals, you can benefit from learning from a variety of knowledgeable people. One chapter is devoted to how to develop such a design team.The codes and regulatory system is something that most designers and builders must deal with. It is best to consider these aspects from the very beginning, so there are no surprises down the road. One very useful chapter discusses how to approach this and what outcomes to expect.The last half of the book looks at all of the materials and systems that must be employed to create a modern home. Starting with the foundation and working upward to walls, floors, roofs, and mechanical systems. Common choices for each of these aspects is described and evaluated according to the criteria matrix presented earlier. This evaluation should help the designer make the most appropriate choices for his specific project.The chapter on mechanical systems describes all of the basic provisions needed for utilities, and includes HVAC choices. While the various heating options are shown, there is no way presented to compare each of them for efficiency, which should be a major consideration.In his concluding remarks, Magwood says, “We are, collectively, at the bottom edge of a learning curve to figure out how to maintain our current comfortable lifestyles while dramatically reducing our ecological impacts, our exposure to toxins, and our reliance on fossil fuels --- all with an eye toward resiliency in a rapidly changing world.” This book should help us on that path.
