When David Limbaugh let his friend Steve know that he had doubts about Christianity, he was surprised by Steve’s response. Instead of a blast of arrogant judgmentalism, Steve responded like a Christian should—with grace and evidence. What has happened since that time is told in this excellent new book. Limbaugh artfully tells his journey from skepticism about Christ to skepticism about skepticism and ultimately to trust in Christ.David is a lawyer, but he doesn’t write like a lawyer. While he’s intellectually precise, he writes as if he’s sitting across the table from you, anticipating your questions and objections. This is rare for a book of Christian evidences (often called Christian apologetics). Such books often read like technical manuals, but not Jesus on Trial. Limbaugh not only does a masterful job of highlighting the abundant evidence that supports Christianity, his insights into what the scriptures actually say will have you marveling at the tapestry of scripture and the Savior who wove it.From the very beginning, Limbaugh bares his soul, holding nothing back about how his previous doubts were shielded by an embarrassing lack of knowledge. He writes, “I knew, after all, that I hadn’t really given the Bible itself a hearing, much less a fair one. To my surprise— and this is embarrassing to admit—Steve showed me how verses of Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, were tied to others in content and theme with remarkable frequency. Amazingly, I had never looked at a reference Bible before, and I was blown away. My ignorance was on display, but Steve wasn’t remotely judgmental— to help me learn more, he even gave me that Bible. I was genuinely intrigued to discover that the Bible was not simply a mishmash of stories, allegories, alleged historical events, and moral lessons. There was obviously a pattern here, and for the first time in my life the Bible appeared to me to be thematically integrated. The scales on my eyes started peeling away.â€His two chapters called “Aha Moments†reveal the numerous tipping points in Limbaugh’s journey where scale after scale fell away—tipping points that no honest seeker of truth can ignore. Of course, as Limbaugh admits, many who are not interested in truth, or have their own agenda, ignore or remake Christ in their own image.He writes, “We must not casually remake Jesus in the image in which we prefer to see Him or which conforms to the popular culture’s misperceptions about Him. Our politically correct culture may, presumptuously, choose to recast Jesus as indifferent to sin and saccharine sweet, no matter the circumstances, but this Jesus is God, and God cannot look upon sin. What do these revisionists make of the Jesus Who made a whip of cords and drove the moneychangers out of the Temple (John 2: 15)? … What do the revisionists say about the Jesus Whom Paul describes as “revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus †(2 Thess. 1: 7– 8)? What of the difficult moral standard Jesus laid down in the Sermon on the Mount? Did He show indifference to sin there?†Limbaugh rightfully concludes: “This idea that Jesus is meek, mild, indifferent, and non-judgmental is the stuff of pure myth.â€In addition to correcting the culture’s emasculated view of Christ, Limbaugh has two fantastic chapters tackling the paradoxes of Christianity. These include: God’s plan of salvation, including the relationship between grace and works; the acknowledgement that we are sinful yet commanded to be perfect; the Trinity, that God is one in essence yet three in persons; that Jesus has two natures, human and divine; that you must give up your life to find it; that Christians are strong when they are weak; that God is sovereign yet humans have free will; that God knows all and is unchangeable, yet we are to pray; that the Bible is inspired yet written by men; and many others. The insights Limbaugh brings to these paradoxes are some of his own, and the best nuggets mined from Christian scholarship that I doubt you’ll find in one place anywhere else.Limbaugh devotes several chapters to the evidence for the Bible, including its unity and reliability as evidenced through history, archaeology, prophecy and science. He debunks several myths and misunderstandings along the way, and then saves his final chapter for what many think is the atheist’s trump card against God: Evil.Many years ago David provided me an “Aha Moment†during one of our very many theological discussions. He said, “Evil really bothers me, but only Christianity has a sensible answer to it.†There’s no question he’s correct. We wouldn’t even know what evil was unless good existed, and real objective good could only exist if God exists. As David explains, evil turns out to be a backhanded argument for God. In fact, evil is the very reason God entered human history in the person of Christ. Only his sacrifice can solve the evil in my heart and yours.David puts it this way: “Don’t be offended by the notion that you must have saving faith in Christ. Don’t assume that God is making you jump through unnecessary hoops. He is the One Who suffered for you. He did this so that you could live. He doesn’t ask you to believe because He is on a divine ego trip, but because He loves you and wants you to latch on to Him in order to be saved from your sins.â€I just can’t recommend Jesus on Trial highly enough. Every thinking person should investigate the claims of Christ, who is unarguably the most influential human being to ever walk the earth. If his claims are true (and Limbaugh shows they are), then we won’t be putting him on trial—he will be putting each of us on trial. Only Christ can secure you a favorable verdict.
As a former atheist for over 25 years, and a man of science with evidence-based truth seeking mindset, I found my way back to Christianity through scientific evidence, and historical and archeological evidence to the credibility of the biblical accounts. When I read the book "Jesus on Trial" by David Limbaugh, it brought me back to my own journey to faith in such a striking way that I said to myself "I could have written this book". How amazing the Lord works in the lives of people who really seek His truths. I congratulate Mr. Limbaugh for a well written thesis in defense of the Christian faith. The book was clear with convincing arguments, evidence-based and easy to understand by all readers. I highly recommend it to all who care about the truth.
David Limbaugh gives many reasons for his faith and why you should have that faith too. It is like a Bible Study. He gives many texts to support His beliefs. Overall I find him to be true and faithful to the Bible. His faith is based on the evidence that he has studied and found to be true. He is a lawyer and uses his lawyer skills to research and prove facts and that is one of the reasons that this book is more a statement of facts to compel one to believe.
In Jesus On Trial, David Limbaugh presents the origins of Christianity, as documented in the Bible, with a logical progression that addresses common doubts and misconceptions. Through thoughtful presentation targeting both unbelievers and Christians harboring unanswered questions, Mr. Limbaugh offers a healthy dose of historical enlightenment along with numerous examples from esteemed apologetics and evangelists. His dexterity in dissecting numerous Bible intricacies and paradoxes with logic and probative research reflects his own doubts and questions over the years. Evidentiary analysis is admirably thorough, yet the heft of evidence never impedes a reader's progress; all referenced footnotes are packaged in the back of the book as fifty pages of Notes---convenient for later study.As someone raised without religion, only to find it in middle-age, I was quite surprised to learn the numerous facts that support the veracity of the Bible, its writers, and Christ Himself; these facts rooted in archaeology, science and the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies as written in the New Testament. For a once-professed agnostic and skeptic as myself, Mr. Limbaugh wisely includes the most popular mainstream arguments against God and all things supernatural by using our own analytical styles to skillfully refute these positions---sometimes humorously so, as when he discusses Darwinism and the Big Bang Theory.Jesus On Trial presented to me a missing link toward better understanding Jesus Christ, his relationship to God, and how the Old and New Testaments seemingly support each other. By showing the deeply personal nature of God's spirit early on, Mr. Limbaugh goes to the heart of Christian beliefs with an intimacy and sensitivity that is often attempted in Church sermons but is difficult to achieve in that short a time span. I'm now inclined to read the Bible in its entirety in order to see for myself the wisdom that it holds, as well as how it unfolds. This book will be nearby, to be used as a reference guide.While I rarely dog-ear pages of a brand new hardcover, I couldn't resist doing so with this book because so many passages resonated so deeply---they were "Aha!" moments, as some chapters are aptly named. One, in particular, explained a question I and many grapple with: the paradox of why, when we strive so hard, and usually unsuccessfully, to live without sin, God ultimately accepts us anyway, based on our pure faith in Him. The answer is beautiful, in my view: when we wear the veil of Christ, who died for our sins, God sees this veil, which reflects His Son, Jesus. At that point, what imperfections lie underneath will be overlooked.One of the most important chapters discusses Truths, Miracles and the Resurrection of Christ. Mr. Limbaugh describes the three states of thought throughout history: premodernism, modernism and postmodernism. The indisputable shift toward secularization parallels the postmodernist agenda, which conveniently excludes scientific and archaeological facts that support Christianity, and the Bible as the living word of God. The absence of such teachings in schools and universities is troubling because all generations deserve to know them.The breadth of historical references and philosophical analyses make Jesus On Trial relevant reading for anyone, especially those troubled by the erosion of societal values. While such a vast study in human and theological history is not necessarily light reading, it's fascinating and mentally quite nourishing. It's to be expected that contemplating the history of mankind, our current condition, and our future destiny would be impossible to mull over and digest in superficial snippets or sound bytes.The powerful truths presented by Mr. Limbaugh are packaged and preserved with great deliberation and deserve to be shared and discussed. There's no good reason to ignore well-documented evidence supporting Christianity, except to perpetuate the rewriting of history in an attempt to dilute faith. As Mr. Limbaugh alludes, if one doesn't believe, what is one afraid of by discussing faith? Truth is inconvenient only for those who wish to remain close-minded. That could only preclude a dangerous prophecy for the human race. As he states in his Conclusion, there's no downside in learning about the Bible; you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
I think all of David Limbaugh book are very well written. I have learned a lot from his writings. He is writing for a Protestant audience. I think David is as impartial as he could be for the general reader. I don't think his writing is as thorough or comprehensive as some of the books I have read on the same subject. I still give it 5 stares and if he writes more books I will buy them. Â
