Enough As She Is: How to Help Girls Move Beyond Impossible Standards of Success to Live Healthy, Happy, and Fulfilling Lives, by Rachel Simmons

From School Library Journal

According to Simmons (Odd Girl Out; The Curse of the Good Girl), founder of the nonprofit Girls Leadership, toxic messages about success and a burning drive to achieve no matter the cost have resulted in a 25 percent increase in already skyrocketing teen depression rates. The author describes how society pushes a "develop confidence" message to young women, which becomes code for yet another area to work on, in an era in which Supergirl is the baseline. At the same time, social media has contributed to teens disconnecting from parents and friendships—those relationships that are the most vital to their growth and resiliency. Meanwhile, parents themselves struggle with myths that tarnish their relationships with their teenager as they come up against a culture that advocates hyperattentive control of all aspects of their child's life. Here, Simmons interviews 96 girls from a variety of backgrounds to analyze the damaging messages they received ("what you accomplish matters more than what you learn," "everyone is doing better than you") and the often destructive results. She encourages strategies to help steady daughters and propel them forward with new messages, while correcting harmful core beliefs along the way. VERDICT A fascinating read that provides ideas for combatting the "not enough" ideals that are devastating young girls.—Julia M. Reffner, Richmond, VA

This is the best book I’ve read in a long time. I bought it thinking that it would be useful to me in the way I serve as a role model to the girls in my life, but actually, it’s becoming incredibly eye opening about my own behaviors and what I notice in the women around me. This book is written and marketed towards girls, but I think it is invaluable to women as well. I’ve learned so much and I can assure you that this beautiful ok will change the way you think about yourself and the way you can support the girls in your life. Enjoy it! It’s a gem. In addition to reading the book I listened to the audiobook and it was great.

Torn between the desire for your daughter (and/or son, truth be told) to succeed and the concern about losing your kiddo in the process? This book is for you. In "Enough As She Is,"girl expert Rachel Simmons takes our succeed-at-all-costs culture head-on, exposing the damage it inflicts and giving guidance on how to help your child experience true success without getting sucked in to the demands of unreasonable societal expectations. EASI provides reinforcement to listen to your gut and let your child follow her (his) heart. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I'm the mom of bright kids, and I want the opportunities of the world for them. At the same time, I am appalled by the resume-building expected of *children* and by the pressure to market our kids so that they can succeed. EASI is reassurance that being genuine and true still leads to meaningful success.

Anyone who works with girls, has a girl, is a girl, was a girl, knows a girl or wants to make a difference for a girl should check this one out. All the stuff that I see, hear and talk with girls about every day in my work is so beautifully put together here. Highly recommend.

Just started reading this and cannot put it down. I am living this with my 16 year old daughter right now and have already found some very helpful tips!

Repetitive and droning. Essential message is good but frankly you need to start when they are little. Not in high school.

There is nothing not to like about this incredibly valuable book. As a parent and clinical social worker, I see these issues on a daily basis and cannot say enough about what we can and should do to promote the self worth of girls. Thank you, Rachel.

excellent read for anyone with a teen age daughter!

Another great book from Rachel Simmons! So relevant to today’s society. A must read for anyone!

For years my husband and I were in a modern evangelical church where we learned how we could take our "five stones" and knock down the "goliaths" in our lives, or march around our "jericho walls" and keep praising till they came down. We'd only heard that "catechisms" were for those "dead denominational" churches or were somehow "catholic" in a derogatory manner. Then, by God's gracious providence (you'll learn what that term is on Lord's day 10 in this book) He led us to the reformers via two ways: reading history and reading a great theological book (Old Paths by JC Ryle...someone else today's evangelicals should read pronto). We discovered the Heidelberg Catechism, the Cannons of Dordt and the Belgic Confession of Faith (Three forms of Unity as they're called). Practical and theology were were told were mutually exclusive. Not so we soon discovered. In order to know how to live our Christian life you need to know what exactly is the Christian life and that takes knowing, knowing the teachings of the Bible or what they call "doctrine" and you need to know What God has required, What God has Provided and Who it is who provided it as well as How that provision has been made and how what was required has been completely satisfied; not by you or your faith but rather by the perfect obedience of Christ the Righteous One.I came across this book while looking for some ebooks for my new Kindle (which if you don't have, I highly recommend getting for yourself). I've decided to read a chapter a day making it more of a devotional or daily reading book...I'm glad I did. I've now been when you can call Dutch Reformed for about 3 years and the wealth in the Catechism never ceases to amaze me. However, what makes this book so wonderful is that DeYoung, with a pastoral heart and theological head brings the reader to an understanding of these timeless truths with the tenderness a shepherd should and with a bit of humor, heartwarming stories and care for those who, by continued exposure may have forgotten the treasure they possess in these historical documents, and for those of us just discovering these treasures makes their discovery or recovery all that more exciting. So impressed with this book were my husband and I that we decided to give it to two of our nieces who while they've made their public professions of faith, do so within an evangelical environment not too different than what we were brought out of. We longed for them to be grounded in the truths of Gospel, Grace and Gratitude and found DeYoung's impassioned plea for believers of all ages an appropriate venue to help them understand Law, Grace and Gratitude as well as The Apostle's Creed so that they too may cherish them hiding them in their hearts and helping those around them come and discover the Catechism in all its beauty. If you grew up Reformed and forgot the sweet taste of these truths I encourage you to taste and see how good our God is to us.If you grew up being told "catechism" was for dead churches, I challenge you to read this book and witness how very alive the faith of the Reformed churches is and to feast of their bounty and be nourished in the Doctrines of Grace as recovered by the Reformers and laid out for you in tasty morsels which will only make you hungrier for real theology that effects the head, heart and hands.

I bought this book to use as a devotional in 2011, right after my freshman year of college. I have read it through at least three times since then, and it only gets richer and more meaningful as I get older. Kevin DeYoung’s writing is fresh, accessible, and matter-of-fact. His theology is sound, and his love for the Lord is evident on every page. He breathes newness into the Catechism for me each time I read this book, and the Catechism sends me to Scripture and the Lord with renewed awe and devotion.I cannot recommend this devotional enough. I’ve tried to find similar meditative works and keep coming back to this one. It is accessible enough for younger people but theologically rich enough for more mature Christians, as well. I wish more Reformed theologians/writers would write devotional or meditative books like this!

As my friend Buddy likes to say, the subtitle of a book means more than the title. That is certainly true of Kevin DeYoung's newest book, The Good News We Almost Forgot. The add-on is, "Rediscovering the Gospel in a 16th Century Catechism." See what I mean? Buddy was right.I feel like C. J. Mahaney when he states in his review, "I'm sure this will be the best book on the Heidelberg Catechism I've ever read. I know it will be the first." Like most people, I have never read a book on this or any other catechism. I'm glad I did, though. For those of you who have not heard of the Heidelberg Catechism, it was published in 1563 as a way to help with a systematic study of the teaching of the Bible. It takes readers through important theological concepts framed within the Lord's Prayer, the Ten Commandments, and the Apostles' Creed. Ladened with Scripture references, the Heidelberg Catechism helps Bible students to get a bird's-eye view of Reformed Christian doctrine. As for DeYoung's book, it is organized in a similar format as the Catechism. DeYoung divides the Catechism into 52 readings, one for each Lord's Day. In addition to the original text, he provides a short, 2-3 page commentary exploring the themes and offering practical applications in an engaging, readable way. From the virgin birth to the resurrection, from the Trinity to divine providence, from the Sabbath to justice, this book offers a brief discussion on a variety of topics pivotal to the Christian life. The one point of criticism that I have of this book is the chapter on infant baptism, and it is not because I'm a believer-baptism proponent. I am eager to find out why others believe in infant baptism, and search for lucid pieces that explain it. This was not one of them. DeYoung falters here in his confusing, rambling, and (in my opinion) illogical connection of circumcision to paedo-baptism. He has to make too many logical jumps and assumptions about entering into "covenantal communities" that he appears to ignore too many passages in the New Testament about baptism. As I reread what I wrote, perhaps my critique is more with infant baptism as a whole rather than DeYoung's defense of it.While it may be odd to read a commentary of a commentary of the Bible, but I highly recommend this book for devotions, public reading, or as an introduction to Christianity. I think that you'll enjoy this work, and gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of both the Heidelberg Catechism and the Bible.

Review

“It is now clear that [Solzhenitsyn] towers over all his contemporaries, European, American, and Latin American . . . The greatness of Russia is in this novel as it has not been in any work of fiction since the generation of Dostoevski and Tolstoy.” ―Lionel Abel, The Wall Street Journal

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn burst on the literary scene in 1962 with his short novel "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich". It depicted an ordinary day in the life of an ordinary inmate in one of the Siberian labor-camps of the Soviet Gulag. Solzhenitsyn's next major novel was published in 1968 under the title "The First Circle". It was a depiction of life in a "sharashka", which stood at the other end of the spectrum of Gulag prisons. A "sharashka" was the slang name by which inmates referred to the research and development laboratories of the Soviet Gulag labor camp system. Scientists, engineers, and mathematicians sent to the Gulag were, if they were lucky, assigned to a sharashka to work on projects that might prove useful to Stalin in his quest for ironclad security and his war with capitalist imperialism. Compared to the Siberian labor-camp of Ivan Denisovich, a sharashka was cushy; to be sure, it too was part of the Gulag, and the Gulag was hell, but a sharashka was, in Dantean terms, "the first circle of hell".This 741-page novel covers four days (Dec. 24-27, 1949) in a sharashka in Moscow known as Marfino -- 300 prisoners and 50 guards. The novel begins with a Soviet diplomat making an anonymous phone call to the American embassy to alert it of Soviet espionage focused on the atomic bomb. The embassy's phones are bugged and the phone call is recorded, but the Soviet security service doesn't know who the caller was. So inmate engineers and scientists at the Marfino sharashka are assigned the task of identifying the traitor, as quickly as possible. In the novel, Solzhenitsyn adds considerable depth and detail to the portrayal of the life of zeks (Gulag inmates) furnished in "Ivan Denisovich". He also uses the book to deliver a scathing critique of the Soviet system -- its ideological absurdities, its bureaucratic infighting and inefficiencies, its dishonesty and hypocrisy, and its cruelty. To top it off, the novel contains a devastatingly mocking and chilling portrait of Josef Stalin (see Chapters 19-23). Solzhenitsyn realized that as originally written, the novel was far too critical of the Soviet Union for it to see the light of day (this was in the mid-60's), so he "self-censored" it, excising nine chapters altogether and revising, or softening, those details sure to be most offensive to Soviet sensibilities. That self-censored version was published in 1968 under the English title "The First Circle", but even as expurgated it was not deemed fit for publication within the Soviet Union (and, indeed, that expurgated version contributed to the decision to expel Solzhenitsyn from the Soviet Union in 1974).This is the original, unexpurgated novel, in a form that Solzhenitsyn continued to tweak and revise. It has been brilliantly translated by Harry T. Willetts, who worked closely with Solzhenitsyn. Distinguishing it from the truncated version is the initial word "in" in the title. IN THE FIRST CIRCLE is the best Russian novel from the twentieth century that I have so far encountered in my ongoing survey of Russian literature in translation. It is a masterpiece.Though nominally covering only four days in late 1949, the novel contains the back stories of dozens of characters, stretching back to the days of the Bolshevik Revolution. It is superbly plotted. Its characterizations of about two dozen zeks (and their wives) are sensitive and endearing. In addition to the penetrating critique of the Soviet system and the detailed portrayal of the Gulag, the novel also contains many perceptive observations about human beings in general. It is rich in historical detail. And, in the best tradition of Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, it is rich in its exploration of moral and philosophical matters. For the title to this review, I have appropriated lines relating to the diplomat who made the anonymous phone call to the American embassy that triggered the four days of the novel. Heretofore, he had conducted himself according to the law that "we are given only one life", and thus he married well, accumulated the nicest material objects available on his side of the Iron Curtain, and even travelled abroad. He is soon to be posted to New York as part of the Soviet Union's delegation to the United Nations. But he has a spiritual and moral crisis of sorts, as a result of which he becomes aware of another law -- "that we are given only one conscience, too." "A life laid down cannot be reclaimed, nor can a ruined conscience." That's just one of the moral/philosophical conundrums Solzhenitsyn explores in this great novel.

"August 1914" kicks off the epic "Red Wheel" as Solzhenitsyn tries to capture the coming of the Russian Revolution in a series of novels. Another man's book is on Solzhenitsyn's mind; how can a Russian novelist write an epic on war and not confront Tolstoy and "War and Peace"? Tolstoy even makes a brief appearance at the start of the book. Solzhenitsyn guides the reader through the disastrous Russian invasion of East Prussia in August 1914 and unveils a number of characters-some real and some imaginary. There are haunting portraits of General Samsanov and Tsar Nicholas II. There are also descriptions of the battle and Solzhenitsyn's background from World War Two help him a great deal; these are some of the greatest battle scenes I have ever read. He guides the reader through the staff headquarters and to the front lines. He also offers unforgettable characters drawn from all of Russian society: a well off family at home, young officers connecting with the men, radical students, gentle peasants serving as troops. While his narrative is excellent, Solzhenitsyn is not as strong when he attempts to mimic the "camera eye" used by John Dos Passos in the USA trilogy. Nor does he quite succeed when he lists a number of headlines from the newspapers or offers detailed history in small print. But these are minor flaws that do not take away from the grand epic.If you are reading the work in English, make sure you use the version translated by H.T. Willetts that was released in 1989 and FSG published the paperback in 2000. This is the translation included in the Kindle. This version, unlike the original, contains a scathing look at Lenin as well as a detailed description of the rise and death of Stolypin, the one Russian statesman who may have been able to lead Tsarist Russia through the chaos it would succumb to during the Great War.Be warned. This is an epic undertaking. The book is almost a 1,000 pages and I advise you keep notes on characters, events and places. This is not a book for everyone. But it is a great epic and, if not up to the level of "War and Peace", "August 1914" is still in the same ballpark. How many other recent novels can we make that claim about?

Outstanding novel. I had previously read the Glenny translation which contains the Soviet sanitized version. This translation, by Willetts, which includes material from Lenin in Zurich, shows what Solzhenitsyn would have written without the censorship. As others reviewers have mentioned this novel follows the initial battles between the Germans and Russian at the start of WWI. While a novel, Solzhenitsyn, in the manner of Tolstoy describing the battle of Borodino, strives for historical accuracy. Descriptions of military leadership machinations will be familiar to anyone who has worked with the US Federal bureaucracy or the military. While the book is fairly long, it moves quickly and while not a light read keeps your interest. I highly recommend this novel as it is among a few that described the descent of the Russian Empire into the failed experiment of Soviet Russia.

I took beginning piano lessons as an adult for about 5 years over 15 years ago. I never had much time to practice and so never got very good. After I stopped taking lessons I would try playing piano every now and then but since I never got very good at sight reading I had a difficult time and would give up quickly. I would go months at a time without playing anything. A couple of years ago I wanted to see if I could learn Pachelbel's Canon in D, and in searching for sheet music I found out that it was the last piece in book #2 of the Alfred's adult beginner series. I bought the series and decided that I needed to start from the beginning and go through it systematically. I'm so happy I did. Piano has become fun again, and I feel like I'm really learning a lot. I practice almost every day. After not quite 2 years, I'm still only 1/2 way through book #2 because I want to play each piece solidly before moving on (and so still haven't made it to Pachelbel), but I'm having fun learning other genres of music and becoming much better at sight reading. I found a really good instructional channel on YouTube, "Lets play piano methods" that has all the pieces from the Alfred's series along with very helpful instruction for each song.

this CD I bought, each song does not match the # on the book I bought (for example, #75 on the book is actually #56 on the CD). I have been playing the guessing game for each song I am practicing. I also do not like that each song was recorded with lots of other instruments so it is so hard to try to detect the piano keys in it...A total disaster to me.But luckily, I recently found out that it is much easier to just watch Youtube, each song has multiple demo lessons (from slow to fast), it is so much easier to just use the book, and find the demo on Youtube, if you have not found out, try.Do not buy this CD...this is my advise.

This DOES NOT go with the Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course "Adult All-In-One Course: Lesson, Theory, Technic" book (ISBN-10: 0882848186)! It goes with the book titled Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course: "Lesson Book, Level One" (ISBN-10: 0882846167). There are two very different books titled "Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course" but sub-titled differently!

The music on the disk does not really match with what the book is asking of you. Starting from the beginning, they ask you to play a melody from Ode to Joy and just the melody. On the piano. Yet on the disk it's played with multiple instruments, chords. All recorded on some horrible synthesizer. It's impossible for a beginner to understand what you're supposed to be playing and how it should sound by listening to it.In fact considering how confusing it is, it's not just useless, it makes the whole thing worse than not listening to the CD at all.

This is the CD corresponding to Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course Level 1. I expected a piano to be playing the music. That is, after all, the instrument we're trying to learn and the reason why we bought the Alfred book and CD in the first place. Instead, as another reviewer noted, what is presented is Muzak. If there is a piano present, it's hard to pick it out. I wouldn't say the CD is worthless, but it certainly isn't worth very much.Addendum: A surprising number of Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course Level 1 videos can be found on Youtube.

I'm trying to learn the piece and would prefer to hear the piano performance of what I'm learning, but this is instrumentals, and its of absolutely no help to me.

I would have given this five sars if it had included instruments other than the piano. When you're learning to play a piece on the piano you dont need to hear other instruments drowning out the notes and rhythms you are trying to concentrate on. When the accompaniment is not the best it could be and its overpowering it makes it difficult to learn the piece you're working on. Even though the CD wasnt as good as I had hoped for it was better than not having anything at all. I was able to distinguish some of the examples and to play along with them despite the annoying accompanimens, so I gave it 4 stars.

Do not buy! Some smart ass decide to mix heavy background instruments sounds along the notes you see. The worst part is that the notes weren't played in piano. It is very annoy. I was aware of it before bought it thinking that I will just use it to get the right tempo. If you are thinking the same thing, do not make the same mistake I did. Do not buy, this is not even good enough to get the tempo right since it weren't played in piano.

From what this lady went through, she complains little, has great memory and the story flows smoothing and keeps your interest. I have to add this book to one of the favorites and knowledgeable of all frontier story's I have read recently. A remarkable lady in a dangerous time.

An interesting story by the wife of a Cavalry Officer and her adventure coming West to join him, becoming a widow and then returning to her home in Tennessee apparently later remarrying. Implies she did not like Native American but all part of her story and the times . Her experiences will astound you for life in what is now Wyoming was not easy for soldiers much less their wives.

I purchased this book to give me some background of what life was like for army wives stationed out West and in this particularcase, Fort Phil Kearny. The author was the wife of Lt. Grummond that was killed in the Fetterman massacre and she speaks at lengthabout her arrival at the Fort, the times leading up to the massacre and what happened after.I was able to glean a lot of information about the happenings at the Fort as well as what travel was like for the women whoaccompanied their husbands to the isolated garrisons. Especially interesting is the discussion of winter travel. All in all, a good book that gives the reader a general idea of what life was like at an isolated army post. There is other materialcovering her trip from the East as well as extensive material about the events that came much later - after she left the post.

This is a good historical account, although one-sided, of the incidents of Fort Phil Kearney and the actions of Fetterman and the commanding officer. A much better account of what life was like for soldiers, and especially their wives during this period of history.

Her style of writing is almost archaic but interesting, I have read pieces from the 1850's that had much more fluidity to their structure.

First class read.

Amazing read.

Well written within the constraints of the period.

I read this book and I like the humor in it. It helped me to self-publish my books "Pray Today!" and "Ha Ha Ha!". However it also was fairly straight forward on the difficulty of getting a book published and getting a agent. With that information it helped me to decide to go the self-publish route.

Laid out and written well. Very helpful, still working on the project. Writing done, illustrations in the works. The process will be useful.

This is a great book that covers the process of publishing children's books. I am an artist and needed a resource in my quest to illustrate and write a book for children.

great ideas and tips on how to get motivated and inspired into writing a childrens book, great way to educate yourself.

A great guide to have and read. It helps inform you on publishing your books. I would buy it again.

Packed with info. Lots of things to consider that I hadn't thought about before the book enlightened me!!
