Anne-Marie-Louise d'Orleans, duchess de Montpensier, who was always called "La Grande Mademoiselle", has been a figure who has facinated French historians for centuries - unfortunatley, there have not been many books in english about her eventful life.Born in 1627, Mademoiselle was the first grandchild born in the royal family of France for several centuries. She was destined to be a matrimonial pawn for her family because of her closeness to the throne and the immense fortune she inherited from her mother. She was in her time, the richest woman in France and it's greatest heiress.We have been fortunate that Mademoiselle thought to write her memoirs during her lifetime. These have been used as the basis for this book. However all her assertions and ommissions have been cross-checked. The author presents a fairly straightfoward accounting of the princesses life. From her early years and the inattention of her father, Gaston (to whom she owed her royal position) and her conflicts with the court, to her later disgrace and exile and grand love of the Sun King's courtier Lauzun.At the end of the book are three lengthy appedix' (or essays more correctly) dealing with Mademoiselle's writings and her much coveted fortune.The only complaint I have about this book is that despite lengthy sections dealing with Mademoiselle's writings we actually hear very little of her voice in it. We are given a fairly objective view of her life by the author, but it could possibly have been enhanced by at least one section which let Mademoiselle speak for herself.One earlier english work on Mademoiselle "La Grande Mademoiselle" by Francis Steegmuller, 1956 reproduces her written "self portrait" and this book is worth looking up for that alone.Aside from the text it is nice to see such a well bound and produced book as this with nice study covers and acid free paper - designed to last the test of time. A timely reivew of this very active princess' life.

All the charts are missing, there are glaring omissions of statistics, and the formatting is odd. This printing was the result of the bare minimum of effort. It’s like they copied and pasted, clicked merge formats and then never bothered to edit. Italics from book titles are missing, so are quotation marks. This book is a mess

Excellent book that shows how copyright laws in the country have become more of a barrier to the creative world rather than a tool that drives innovation. Lessig offers a mostly balanced argument about why copyright needs to be reformed, however this may do little sway hardcore, intellectual property extremists.If you don't believe in the original ideas that the framers had in mind when copyright laws were drafted, you won't be able to follow Lessig's argument. Some believe that ALL property is absolute and that intellectual property should be no different, regardless of the reasons that we have for limiting the reach and scope of our intellectual property rights.long live "free" culture!

This book is great eye opener to today's world of copyright law. Lessig shows how perpetual copyrights and corporate lawyers are destroying the future of culture. It is also surprisingly entertaining for book centered around intellectual property law, even humorous at times. It includes a narrative of Lessig's own case with the Supreme Court, and how and why it failed. I would recommend to anyone interested in learning about copyright.

This is the third in a series of books by Professor Lessig. The Future of Ideas and Code were excellent in setting the context of the debate about intellectual property. But this book adds to those significant contributions. The author has an interesting ability to bring in anecdotes that enliven his narrative. He also is able to relate in somewhat painful detail his intervention in the Ellred case - where the Supreme Court denied the ability of a person to publish a poem - that by any reasonable standard should be in the public domain. He discusses the role of Jack Valenti (MPA) and the RIAA in trying to alter the balance of interests between the producers and the consumers of ideas. Finally, professor Lessig makes two more sets of contributions that are important to help us understand the dynamics of an arcane issue. First, he does a great job at setting the context for the debates about intellectual property - some of this builds on what was written in his two earlier books - but it is valuable none-the-less. Intellectual property and physical property are not the same and should probably not be considered co-equal under the law.At the same time he makes a great set of suggestions about how to balance the rights of producers of ideas and consumers. The original debate that got Americans concerned with these issues began between James Madison and Thomas Jefferson who argued over the appropriate scope of the "progress clause" in the Constitution. Lessig follows in that great tradition and adds to our knowledge.

This is a must read as the issues that Lessing addresses have implications that go way further than the entertainment industry. I agreed with almost all of his argument although I did find at some point he was pushing it BUT overall he makes a righteous argument and I choose that word "righteous" carefully. This is an issue that effects all of us in everything from education to health care and his arguments resonate in these times of wars for oil and legalized dope dealing by the health care industry. Freeing Mickey is really the least of it but nevertheless lies at the center of the issue and makes a great symbol. However I caution the potential reader to not multitask and read this book while viewing The Pirates of The Caribbean as the outcome is that they will go on to raise the colors and break the law!

This book is worth the price just to hear the constant process of American culture - be a pirate, fend off "the man" to build your industry, become "the man," then go after the pirates who are presumably cutting into your business. Money makes hypocrites of us all. Please, RIAA, don't sue me for reading this book (although I'm sure you'll find a way, if there aren't any grandmothers or poor college students you can harass).

A very scary view of our society and legal system.Unfortunately, it's true, and remains unchaged to this day.Read this, and reinforce what you hopefully already know about the RIAA and MPAA.

I bought this book in hardback after enjoying the paperback version for years at my grandparents' house. There is a great variety of poets, styles, and works. I like the commentary at the bottom of every page giving insight into the poet or poem, and the short biographical paragraph introducing the poets so that I have a frame of reference for them. Poets range from the 13th to the 20th centuries, and over 120 poets are included. The arrangement of poems is chronologically by poet's birthday.Harmon includes lots of well-known authors, (like Shakespeare, Donne, Blake, Keats, Dickinson, Poe, Housman and Frost,) lesser-known favorites of mine (H. Vaughn, Edward Gray, Francis Thompson and Gelett Burgess,) and many poets I'd never heard of. I still find new friends and revisit old favorites. I'm a grad student now, and hope to keep this book on my shelf to read to my grandkids one day.

If you want one volume of poetry to enjoy, this should be it. A grand selection, great annotations of the poems, what more could you want? I have the volume and wouldn't trade it for any other of its kind. Harmon is a witty, intelligent, alert, and wonderful guide to the best poems out there.You will be an educated person, finally, after reading the volume. Onward!

Nice to know what was the most read / famous!

Didn't see many familiar poems in this book. They're mostly okay but not what I was expecting.

This thing is so full of wonderful material it's lovely.Also the introductions to each author and the notes for each poem are very insightful and sometimes funny.Multiple indexes make everything easy to find.

i have had several poetry anthologies before this one, this one is my favorite, the way it is organized, the ample space on each page for notes and definitions (i might scribble in), and the inclusion so far (i am reading it from beginning, around page 107). It's done right, which makes it more readable and a great book.

This is the absolute best poetry book ever compiled! I love this book. I used to own a paperback copy of it many years ago and it was lost during a move. I was so upset about it. At that time I did not know about Amazon. So I went years without it :o( Then, for an anniversary gift, my husband bought this book for me from Amazon!. I was so happy that I could have cried! I try to be a good citizen on Amazon and do reviews of the products I buy (and I buy a lot of stuff from Amazon!), but rarely do I do book reviews--I just figure that's a personal thing. We love books (or not like them as much), for personal reasons that are often not quantifiable. But this is a bit different, this is not a book per say, but a manual. The purpose of the manual was to enable computer dummies (like me), or those less intuitive with technology, to be able to do semi-creative things at least, with the phenomenal tool that is iMovie. I will be writing to the authors of this book as well, but I consider this book to be a gift. A magic box of a book. Even I have been able to follow the easily, meticulously outlined steps/lessons, included in each chapter of the book and make videos/"movies" of my own. The first one was of my mom baking bread, and I know that what I produced, as insignificant as it may be in the scheme of things, is something I will treasure forever. This book also made me feel really good about my computer skills: made me feel like, given good and precise instruction, I too can conquer my tech fears. I know I have just begun to scratch the surface, and really look forward to what my next "movie" will look like. My sincerest GRATITUDE to the authors for the gift of this book, and the creative adventure they have made possible for me.

These books are great-- well written, clear, easy to understand, not afraid the poke fun at the weaknesses of iMovie. The creative layout and abundant cross referencing makes it easy to find the information you want. I keep this beside me as an all around good tech support who never puts me on hold or refers me to somebody else and then disconnects me so that I have to start all over from the beginning.

This book is a good general knowledge though not up to the latest version of iMovie. I had specific questions it didn't answer such as the difference in saving your project in different qualities, speeds, etc. and what that would mean such as memory drain on your computer vs movies clarity, etc.

There are four pages in this book p. 78-82 about deleting clips in imovie. The information there is false. Pogue alludes to, but never clearly states to the fact that you can't delete clips if any portion has been used in a project in imovie 10, a debilitating bug for a computer with limited storage like a Macbook air. You can't spit the clip and delete one clip. If you originally import your clip as a one hour-long clip you are stuck with those 20 gigs of wasted storage. This makes iMovie not usable for a laptop with limited flash storage (most recent Mac laptops).

This is what you need whether you are a novice or an experienced user of iMovie. The changes from iMovie 11 are pretty substantial and this book is a great help in picking up the new tricks. It is my main source for learning the new iMovie.

This book was pretty much useless for IOS 11 Iphones. It mostly covers IMovie on a MAC.... The description on this product was very mis leading for iPhones.

As always, David Pogue's Missing manuals are packed full of useful information. I would give it 5 stars if the indexing made more sense to me; this is likely a matter of personal taste rather than a shortcoming of the material.

David Pogue is a great instructor in print. He covers so much that I can't imagine not being able to find the answers we all need. I always buy his books when I need one.

Based upon letters, articles, public and private records, and the unpublished autobiography of Frederic Myers, one of the founders of the Society For Psychical Research (SPR).This book is a rare find, indeed, because of the sheer truth of the matter. The first section of the book develops Mr. Myers personality and events that shaped who he came to be. It follows him briefly though childhood and into college, where he lost a medal in poetry when is was discovered he had borrowed a little to much from other classic poets, and he was forced to forfeit his medal.Mr. Myers then befriended Annie Marshall, who was to be the greatest love of his life. Annie Marshall was a married woman, and their relationship was platonic. But she had a troubling life, and Mr. Myers emotionally supported her. She was in a terrible marriage and suffered greatly from her husband as he battled mental illness. Mr. Myers was devastated when, after feeling unbearable pressure, Annie Marshall committed suicide.Events such as these, and his burning passion to find out if we really die, helped Mr. Myers to help form the SPR. Originally founded by William Barrett, the SPR was lead by Mr. Myers, Edmund Gurney, and Mr. and Mrs Sidgwick. The SPR was highly controversial in it's day. The world scientific community and intellectuals scoffed at the SPR, but they felt the research was needed, and continued anyways.During this time, Mr. Myers married Eveleen Tennant, who was to be a central force in his life and the SPR after his death. The book goes into his feeling for Eveleen, and how, although he loved her, he felt disconnected from life and his family. But the greatest love of his life, Annie Marshall, still influenced him, and Eveleen could never overcome that. Through his travels with the SPR, Mr Myers would attend seances and sitting with mediums, and would communicate with Annie Marshall.And Eveleen knew it. Eveleen could never relate to the SPR or it's leaders, and carried a jealousy for the mediums Mr. Myers kept contact with for research. And after Mr. Myers death, she destroyed valuable records of evidence he had collected from the mediums on proof of life after death.Mr. Myers had written an autobiography, and had privately distributed copies to close friends. Eveleen fought to retrieve the books back after Mr. Myers death, and nearly succeeded but for a few copies. Sir Oliver Lodge refused to give his copy back. Eveleen wanted the books destroyed to wipe Annie Marshall from Mr. Myers life. She then released a severely abridged version of his book. She also fought the SPR on releasing any evidence that he had collected that had any reference to Annie Marshall.But Mr. Myers, after death, began communicating through various mediums....This book, to me was simply fascinating. It examines the records, and accurately creates the personalities and character of the persons involved. From the sickly Mr. Gurney, to the cool intelligence of the Sidgwicks, to the simplicity of the medium Mrs. Piper, this book provides sources and documentation that supports how these people were really like in life.The author even examines the inaccuracies of other biographies on Mr. Myers, and provides proof of why they were wrong.The SPR published thousands of pages of their research, and, although I have read some of the published work, this book matches what I have read so far. In my opinion, this book is as close to the truth as you will get on his life, the time period, and the things that have happened since.It is my opinion, but Mr. Myers has proven to me, that there is life after death.

Hamilton spares no expense in getting to the root of Myers and his personality. The work was very thorough and one has the distinct impression that, if indeed Myers did survive death, he is pleased with the work Hamilton put into identifying with who he was.Trevor Hall and numerous other authors made certain assumptions and blatant errors in analyzing this great historical figure and the present author clears these assumptions and speculations up very nicely, citing the sense of "Platonic love" that Myers had for the likes of Annie Marshall (being, in a sense, his "spiritual" fulfillment and ideal). Misconceptions on the relationship between Edmund Gurney and Myers are also cleared up with due justice. The final concluding chapters were the ones I found the most interesting to read, as it goes through Myers's idea of "the subliminal self", his sittings with Rosina Thompson (that convinced him of survival in accordance with his sittings with Piper), the impact and evaluation of the monumental "Human Personality and its Survival of Bodily Death", the elusive and complex 'cross correspondences' and, finally, the concluding poem that Myers himself wrote -one which leaves the reader with a pleasant feeling, much like what follows laying witness to a beautiful sunrise, or the first glance outdoors after a night of quaint, winter-wonder.All in all, I can't recommend this highly enough for anyone interested in the early history of psychical research or its eccentric pioneers.(the numerous pictures in the book were also appropriate and memorable)

I was drawn to this book because I am interested in Spiritualism and the image of this very handsome man on the front caught my eye. However, my brain hurt while reading this book because I almost got the feeling that the author would like so much to convince the skeptic reader that there exhists life after death and is no laughing matter. I found it to be full of very interesting facts, but, it was too dry and difficult for me to absorb all the different characters in it, due to the fact that it seemed to skip from idea to idea. I could not finish the book. Too bad, I think it could have been much better had the author made the content more colorful and not dry as a bone.

I love crafts and learning new takes on some old favorites. This is a must have for moms with young children. I especially liked the science crafts for children. Most of the crafts had web sites to view what the finished product should look like. That being said there were some web sites that were no longer available. That prevented me from giving a 5 star rating.

There are a ton of crafting ideas and projects in this book, which is exactly what I was looking for with the holiday season approaching. While there was the extra step with the images, I found that that I didn't mind this at all because then I could save many of the images on a saved folder on my computer. That being said, as with many of White Lemon's other "how-to's," I've found the directions to be easy to follow in each project and the most of the projects to be both original and fun to tackle. Would definitely recommend this one.

This book has a really strange collection of crafts, ranging from things to keep children occupied to home decor. There is no index, and no way to find the type of craft you prefer without browsing the entire book; and browsing is not fun because there are not photos or even drawings.The book provides you with only the name of the craft, a very basic summary of instructions, and a link to further info, which you must click if you want to see a picture of a finished project or illustrations of any of the steps in making it. It would actually be easier to use if it were a webpage with a list of links. Since it was free, I can't really complain, but I'm not going to praise it either. I went through the book and made bookmarks in my browser of any crafts that looked worth doing, and I probably won't look in the book itself again.

I got myself a copy of this book as I was feeling a little arty-crafty and wanted to put a bunch of leftover art supplies to use.I ended up making a bunch of stuff like mason jar candles (I did get yelled at for using my sister's cocktail mason jar), soda bottle pins and this cute little broach for my daughter. I did add a little glitter to most of the stuff I made coz my daughter is in that stage where she wants glitter in absolutely everything.Only buy a copy of this book if you're okay with the idea of filling your place with a whole lot of cool home made goodies.

I guess you get what you pay for!!! No pictures and some link no longer exist. Also difficult to navigate.
