This obscure work was the first book I ever read about Artificial Intelligence. I was enthralled. As a child just on the cutting edge of the computer generation explosion this book captured my attention and held it throughout. I'm surprised that this book is not more well known. It's well written, factual (for the time), emotive, and just a great story!

Love this book!

Ariel by André Maurois is a fictionalized biography of poet Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822). Shelley, the son of a wealthy landowner, went to school at Eton, where he was bullied. He was expelled from Oxford for publishing a pamphlet called The Necessity of Atheism. His father was enraged when he heard about this pamphlet, and this caused him to break off relations with his son; the two of them were never reconciled. Shelley married 16-year-old Harriet Westbrook, a friend of his sisters, rescuing her from a bad situation at home and school. But Harriet was not his intellectual equal, and their marriage was very unhappy. While still married to Harriet, Shelley fell in love with Mary Godwin, the daughter of his mentor, the philosopher William Godwin, and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, who died giving birth to her. Shelley left his wife and lived with Mary, which caused a huge scandal in society. Godwin would have nothing to do with the couple, even though he relied on Shelley to pay his debts. Harriet eventually committed suicide over her husband’s affair, even though, according to Maurois, she had suicidal tendencies all her life. Shelley and Mary married, and Godwin forgave them, but pretended they had not been living together for several years.Their troubles were far from over, though. A court refused to give Shelley custody of his two children by Harriet. He had several children by Mary, but all but one died as babies or small children. The couple spent much of their time in Italy, where Mary’s stepsister Claire lived with them. Claire had a brief affair with Lord Byron and gave birth to a daughter, but she really loved Shelley, and Mary became jealous. Maurois believes that the relationship between Shelley and Claire was innocent, but others disagree. Shelley died by drowning when his boat, the Ariel, sank. His poetic genius was never recognized during his lifetime, unlike that of his friend Byron, whose poems were the bestsellers of their time. Mary Shelley, of course, became the author of Frankenstein, but Maurois does not talk about Mary as an author, or even say much about Shelley’s poetry; the focus is on their relationship. But his book provides a very good introduction to Shelley.

Wild and wonderful this book is, and on the jacket it claims (rightfully) that Maurois "created in this book an authentic and memorable style, which established a new form of dramatic biography." It was written in 1924 and I discovered it in 2005 on a long meditation/contemplation retreat in southern Spain, so the conditions, while not predicable, were perfect.If you're intrigued by Percy Shelley, and Mary Shelley, and Byron … trust me, these are glorious pages.

This was one of the first books related to computers, much less Artificial Intelligence, that I ever read. It's excellent. Interesting story, personal drama, technical details, a precocious teen tied in just enough to not make it all about him, espionage, etc. And let's not forget Ariel herself... an AI that makes you WANT AI NOW.I have gone thru 3 copies of the paperback edition of this book, and probably re-read it over 200 times in the 25+ years since I first received it. I can't say enough about it, grab a copy for yourself and your own children, and let them wonder what would make AI possible.Every time I finish this book, I'm smiling.

About the Author

May Lamberton, born in 1873 in New York City, was destined to live a long life passionately dedicated to the world of books; she would generously share her interests with American and eventually English readers until her death in Epsom, England, in 1958. May Lamberton, upon graduation from high school, immediately began writing for the Jersey City News. She became its music and drama critic. Her husband, Gustave Becker, was a gifted musician; their daughter Beatrice Warde would win recognition as a leading advocate and educator for fine typography and printing both in the United States and in England. Mrs. Becker wrote influential columns in the Saturday Evening Review of Literature and the New York Herald Tribune, but it was for her “Books for Young People” department in the Herald Tribune that she became most known. It established her, in her daughter’s words, as “that famous ‘Reader’s Guide’ whose advice on the choice of books was sought by thousands in every part of America and in other lands. The secret of that long success is not simply wide reading and a remarkable memory. It is her sure and almost uncanny understanding of readers and what they want from books.” In 1948 Mrs. Becker was awarded the Women’s National Book Award for her outstanding contribution as a Book Reviewer. Most of Mrs. Becker’s writing career had involved book reviews and editorial work, but in 1940, as member and sometime president of the New York Dickens Fellowship, she turned her keen interest and years of experience into writing a book for young people called Introducing Charles Dickens. Just over a decade later, with Mrs. Becker now residing in England, a similar enthusiasm for the very dissimilar—but “incomparable”—author Jane Austen inspired May Lamberton Becker to write a second book of this type. In these two works she gives not only biographical insights, but also greater understanding about the literature the authors created and the times in which they were written. Presenting Miss Jane Austen was Mrs. Becker’s last book for the young people she served for so many years before her death in 1958.

This was a great book! I absolutely loved it! I needed to read this for history and it is my favorite one I have had to read so far.

If you like to read Jane Austen or just watch movies based on her novels, you will enjoy learning more about her family life and background. Although her family is not particularly famous, they are interesting to learn about, because they offer a peek into the many characters in her novels. Just like her characters, her family is portrayed as real, having faults, yet endearing. It is fascinating to see the comparison between the real people and characters in her novels. She really did experience in her family a fairy tale romance like Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett. We also find out how many years she patiently wrote and rewrote Pride and Prejudice. Maybe that is why it is still read today. If you want to learn more about Miss Jane, this book is sure to please.

I'm trying to get into a top B-School, but my math/quant background is weak, so I needed something to help me get up to speed.So far, this book has been great. It's easy to follow (from my level), has on-point topics, and covers the breadth and depth for what it seems I'll need.One caveat is that it uses UK notation, not US. So, some of the standard variable usage and formulas are different, which takes some adjustment. However, I did actually appreciate that this caused me to have to reach a better understanding of them rather than just applying wrote memory.

Not great. I find the explanations unnecessarily dense. Examples are provided but usually only one per concept. Exercises are in the back of each chapter, though they would be more effective interspersed throughout the book. I would not recommend it.

Used this as a study guide for B-school entrance exam. Very well organized. Easy to understand. If your trying to improve your quant skills, this is your book.

This primer hits all the high points. A thorough study of it will prepare you well for the math required for business school. It includes all the statistics, probability, algebra and calculus that B school students need to know. I recommend it highly.

Concise and precise enough to be a good guide to use to recall math behind various MBA studies. Flows well and covers enough. Definitely worth the price.

Very clear explanations of key concepts. I have found the statistics primer to be especially relevant as a second resource to my stats textbook.

Excellent book, just what I was looking for. Starts at the very basic and guides you through all the topics.

And of course, loved the last words dedication!

This book is a great addition to the supply chain management genre—the author ties together all SCM functions in a readable manner—demystifying complex concepts.I found the content well-thought-out as it introduces the reader to basic “SCM 101” business practices while not neglecting to cover more advanced subjects such as optimization and analytics planning.All in all, I have found this book geared towards facilitating learning and as a reliable, up-to-date reference. A great refresher for those working in the field or for others who are just getting started in supply chain management.

I've worked in supply chain management for nearly 3 decades with the world's largest consumer products company. Even with my supply chain logistical management experience, I still found Daniel's book both a great read and full of very good info & tips which I can put to use in my current job. Great book--highly recommend for both the novice & the supply chain expert!

The book is an excellent introduction to all the diverse elements of supply chain and its all encompassing management. Daniel hasn't missed a topic. Would like it to become a more indepth solutions manual down some of the more divergent paths.

Daniel Stanton is a recognized supply chain leader with strong academic credentials. Has has captured the forest and the trees (the important ones) of supply chain management in this book. It's an easy read as well. This book will serve you well.
