Southland, by Nina Revoyr

From Publishers Weekly

Revoyr (The Necessary Hunger) returns to the gritty, central Los Angeles of her debut with this compelling if overlong tale of a headstrong Japanese-American lesbian law student obsessed with discovering her family history and solving a murder mystery. Jackie Ishida, 25, is undone by the sudden death in 1994 of her loving, seemingly healthy Japanese grandfather, Frank Sakai. A veteran of World War II, he lived a philanthropic life and in the 1960s owned a small grocery in the racially integrated Crenshaw district he grew up in. When Jackie's aunt Lois finds a large shoebox with $38,000 in cash in Frank's closet, both women are perplexed, particularly since they also discover a mysterious beneficiary, Curtis Martindale, in a decades-old will. Lois dispatches Jackie to find Curtis. Enter strong, street-smart James Lanier, a cousin of Curtis's, who informs Jackie that Curtis is dead. An employee at Frank's store during the Watts riots in 1965, Curtis, along with three other black teenage boys, was found frozen to death in the store's freezer. This heinous crime was never reported (nor discussed within the Sakai family) and though white beat cop Nick Lawson was pegged as a prime suspect, the case was never solved and Frank closed the store permanently. As Jackie and James dig deeper into Curtis's past, their friendship (and awkward attraction to each other) takes its toll on Jackie's fading three-year relationship with girlfriend Laura. In chapters alternating past and present, clues are uncovered that romantically link Curtis's mother Alma to Frank. When a surprise suspect in the killings is fingered, it paves the way for a dark conclusion rooted in skepticism, injustice and racial intolerance. Somewhat overplotted but never lacking in vivid detail and authentic atmosphere, the novel cements Revoyr's reputation as one of the freshest young chroniclers of life in L.A.Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Spanning three generations, Revoyr's follow-up to The Necessary Hunger (1997) uses the murder of three boys during the 1965 Watts riot as the pivot point for a moving, sometimes harrowing exploration of race relations among black, Japanese, and white residents of L.A. When her grandfather dies in 1994, young Japanese American lawyer Jackie Ishida seeks to discover why her grandfather, Frank, had once planned to leave his Crenshaw grocery store to one of the murder victims, a black teen from the neighborhood. After enlisting the help of one of the young man's relatives, rock-solid community group worker James Lanier, Jackie embarks on a journey that will enable her to understand why she has fled so far from her Japanese roots she won't even consider dating a fellow Asian. Switching effortlessly from the mid-1990s to the 1960s, the 1940s, and back again, Revoyr peoples the landscape with compelling characters who are equally believable whether they're black, Japanese, male, female, gay, or straight. With prose that is beautiful, precise, but never pretentious, she brings to vivid life a painful, seldom-explored part of L.A.'s past that should not be forgotten. If Oprah still had her book club, this novel likely would be at the top of her selection list. Frank SennettCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

There are not enough good things to say about Revoyr's Southland. The novel is beyond incredible and dare I say that Ms. Revoyr is perhaps one of the best contemporary authors of our time. It is a gripping and wonderful novel about tough times in Los Angeles county. Those who have lived through the era following WWII will relate to the heated, racial tensions between that erupted during the Watts riots. If you are part of the latter generation, you will experience a harsh dose of reality as you move with the main character in her search for the killer of four young African American men. The book is extremely realistic, staying true to the time period but also being captivating in that Revoyr's writing style is both creative and engaging. This novel will speak most heavily to native Angelinos but is transcendent and makes a terrific read for anyone attempting to understand the fabric of the star-studded town of L.A

Southland by Nina Revoyr is a tour de force that tells a story of racial disharmony within the seemingly gentle confines of Los Angeles. With the accounting of two families, one Japanese, one Black, we learn the story of how four young boys are intentionally frozen to death in a meat locker during the Watts Rebellion of 1965.The Store owner Frank Sakai is a Japanese American who has been living relatively peacefully in the mixed racial neighborhood since acquiring the store. He'd been interred with his family at Manzanar and subsequently served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team of the United States Army, a fighting unit composed almost entirely of American soldiers of Japanese descent who turned out to be the most decorated unit in American history. Returning home after the war he was able to purchase a small grocery story in Central LA.Upon Frank's death in 1994 his granddaughter, a law student, and a black man who works with youth in a mid-city community center team up to find out the facts surrounding the death of the young men, why Frank had left $38,000 to one of them and mostly, who was responsible for the heinous crime. The two initially explore their own family dialogues but find it difficult to pull together the remnants of the story. "No one talked about history" they lament. As the scope of the investigation enlarges and as each piece of the puzzle is moved into place the real story gets more complicated. Soon even they begin to doubt what they find. The accounts of the Japanese Americans starting in 1939 along with the Black family chronicle starting six years later when the family of one of the boys moves from Texas demonstrates brave and stalwart endurance from both factions. I read a review of this book in which the reader said that his book club did not like the book because it was too sad. I feel that the thing that can make history most sad is only if we don't learn from it.

Thought-provoking both as an historical chronicle of a place and time that isn't necessarily described often within mainstream historical discussions and also as a coming-of-age story of the main character, who is learning about herself, her family, their world and how it is also hers.Very effective in setting a context that is not today's world but that clearly shaped today's world, including the people living in that context, whether they realize it or not.Recommend it for those who are willing to look beneath the surface and invest something of themselves into a less-than-easy life experience.

I got this book for my class on Los Angeles history, and I really enjoyed it. The book flowed well and had a very entertaining storyline. This was one book that I actually took the time to read cover to cover rather than skim through. Though its been a while since I read this book, this book makes me smile whenever I think about it. I really appreciated following the narrator's path to self-discovery while she is seeking to unveil the truth about this history. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested.

Had to read this book for one of my classes and it was my favorite I read all quarter. It is smart, and insightful. Talks about issues with race that have prevailed throughout our country's history. It will really make you think about history repeating itself. I'd definitely recommend.Just be aware, it is background heavy, gives lots of detail so sometimes it tends to drag. But the story is wonderful.

I accidentally came across this title when I was looking for a new book to download. I'm so glad I did! It's very well written and although it is a work of fiction it is a historically correct portrayal of some of the terrible injustices in LA's past (and I think a cautionary tale that history repeats itself). As a native Angeleno I think the story and characters captured the tone, mood and "look" of the real LA in the postwar years through the early '90's.I think readers from anywhere will find this a story well told and worth reading.

What a great read - perfect balance of mystery, suspense, and tragedy. The characters are so diverse, yet still very familiar. My only gripe is the cast - it took me a few chapters (& a side note) to get familiar with this sizable group of characters that span across different families and decades. Regardless, this book was *not* disappointing, at all.

We spent a week this spring using this book. Excellent resource when venturing into areas you may not know. We found it to be mostly accurate, although we went to one campsite that was supposed to be scenic and secluded, rated a 9 or a 10 and it was anything but. That knocked off a star. The navigation of the book is a bit clunky but with practice you understand why the maps and descriptions are in the places they are. Just takes getting used to.Will be using this book a lot!

I was hoping to find campground site maps or links to site maps (which site is located where in regards to the stream, lake, water source or toilets). Descriptions are overly postive ("Beautiful" campground is not close to "beautiful", "great" campgrounds that are not close to the stream or sites bunched together is not a great campground). I did an investigation run through a set of campgrounds near Tahoe and did not find any of the campgrounds were even close to the description. However the campgrounds were all listed so that part was complete. Make sure you check out your campground of choice before planning a week long trip!

Love this book. We use it to plan our trips and keep it in the camper for reference while on our trips. I purchased copies for my boss and coworker as Christmas gifts.

This book is great. This is our first year with a travel trailer and this is just what the Dr ordered. It gives great info on camp sites like dump station, hook ups, trails, activities, wildlife, and more. I have a lot of experience at many camp sites in the sierras and this book explains those to a tee. So this gives me great confidence in the camps I will be exploring this season.

Tge book is well written and exactly what I was looking for. There is information for both off the beaten path as well as well known campgrounds, and it's current and precise.

I wanted more of explanations of the areas not just maps. I did more details of areas and more pictures or detail on what to look for.

This is a great book with reliable guides to Nor Cal camping sites and a thorough introduction to camping. I recommend it based on my 20 years of Nor Cal camping experience. This book manages to fit nearly 700 pages into a small readable portable format.

I have a couple of other Collins maps for Scotland. This one does have more information about Castles than the other Collins maps. However, it you can plan ahead, I recommend getting the Collins Touring Map of Scotland. It has all the castles marked on it, plus a lot of other things worth seeing. If you have time and can use the Touring Map along with doing some Internet research ahead of time, I think you'll get more information from Touring Map. That said, if it's all castles for you, then go with this map. It does have castle details and it folds out smaller than the Touring Map, making it easier to use in the car.

It was a little tough to find specific castles because a.) we had not searched for them before and b.) there are so many castles and other sites in Scotland that specific ones were sometimes difficult to pinpoint within certain coordinates. After we used the map for a while, we began to understand the logic of how it is designed. Best to block out a dedicated hour or so if you are planning on plotting out an extended Castle Tour. Overall, very satisfied with delivery, price, and quality.

Useful guide for out trip to Scotland. Easy to use. Very informative. We were glad to have it along for our trip. It helped with trip planning.

Great review of castles in Scotland. Particularly nice feature is info regarding which castles are open to the public and hours they are open. I plan to use the map extensively for a trip this summer in which my son. grandson, and I will be exploring Scottish castles.

It would take quite a while to visit all of the castles in Scotland, but this map makes the effort a lot easier.

The maps are quite detailed and larger than a regular gas station road map. This allows the map larger font and legend and easier on the eyes. The outer part is thick like coated card stock in order to protect the map from moisture while folded. I would definitely buy this type of map again.

I am overwhelmed by the number of castles listed on this map! I am trying to determine which ones to see - I only have a 2 week vacation!

The map itself seems great, however; the condition it showed up in was not so great. The map was stained and stuck together from getting wet. When I pulled it apart, some sections were not legible. The packaging was not damaged so this happened prior to shipping.

This book belongs in every school library! The text and images perfectly explain how the capital cities of countries throughout the world are places that are not only seats of government, but centers of culture and history that tell the stories about the people and their lives. It's fun to read. The illustrations are lively. Literally and figuratively, it opens a world of exploration with information brief enough to keep children interested and deep enough to lead them into learning more about their favorite sites.

This wonderful children’s book makes traveling and exploring the world accessible for young people. It can broaden children’s horizons, whether they are privileged to actually visit other countries at a young age, or whether this book and Jerven’s great wordsmithing as well as the beautiful illustrations are the only way they will get to visit somewhere beyond their home for now. A perfect gift for your own child, a classroom, a library or a friend or family member’s child, this book will not only entertain them, but will also subtly help them to realize how much big world there is out there!

Capitals is so beautifully illustrated and written with such detail to attention that it can captured my children’s attention, and will help me share with them my love of travel. I didn't have to read far into Edinburgh Twilight to determine that Carole Lawrence is a gifted practitioner of prose writing, capable of producing atmospheric, evocative descriptive passages. Reading a little farther revealed that this novel would feature a fairly standard cast of characters--a brilliant investigator with a tortured personal background, a superior whose grudging admiration he has earned, a loyal subordinate, and a creepy serial killer for an adversary--and a fairly standard police procedural/thriller plot which unfortunately developed too slowly to be really gripping. More unfortunate, though, were the anachronisms and inaccuracies in terminology that kept making me stop and say to myself, "Wait, that can't be right." A few examples: A woman in 1881, when the novel is set, couldn't have been working as a typist since typewriters didn't become standard office equipment till a few years later. A bruise would likely have been treated with an application of arnica or other liniment, not an icepack. A nearsighted person wouldn't have trouble threading a needle; close work is difficult for people who are farsighted. Whip stitch is used to close seams, not sew on buttons. A character couldn't have said he was "allergic" to dogs; the word didn't even enter the English language till the 20th century. The cumulative effect of these and other mistakes made it impossible for me to really enjoy this book. Assuming that, like me, other fans of period mysteries demand a reasonable degree of historical accuracy in their reading, the mistakes also make the book impossible for me to recommend.

I was really drawn to this book by the blurb, a detective story set in Edinburgh at the end of the 19th century. Murders to be solved without all the gadgets and gizmos of modern crime scene investigation and no DNA!! I really wanted to like Detective Inspector Hamilton and sometimes I did, but he failed my 'would I like to be stuck in a lift with this person' test with his frequent Shakespeare quotes. I did rather enjoy the cheeky chappy that was the urchin Derek McNair. I expected a slow pace but I'm sorry to say I found this dragged and I didn't get the build of tension that I was expecting.I received an ARC of Edinburgh Twilight via NetGalley and my thanks to the publishers Thomas & Mercer for that.

One of the worst novels I have ever read, the characters are so artificial, the principal character gives out 5 pound notes in a tip this would represent about 25% of his annual salary. The dialect is current low life Scotland while in that period the dialect would be as in a Burns Poem, would be unintelligible to a modern reader. In the period homosexuality was a Penal Offence and the participants and there clubs would be well known to the police. I wonder why the ace detective never interviews friends of the murdered?.

Ian Hamilton is an earnest police detective with a logical brain and deep emotional scars. He is determined to find the sadistic serial killer known as the Hollyrood Strangler. With the aid of a police sidekick, a savvy street kid, the best pickpocket in Edinburgh, a rotund librarian, a brawny brawler, Ian's aunt, and other assorted characters from both sides of the law, Ian gathers clues and bruises as the body count rises. The detective yarn kept my attention for a while, but then got rather muddled as threads of social issues and psychological pathos were woven into the plot. The detective yarn progressed to the expected ending, but it seemed to me that there were a number of loose ends left for the next Ian Hamilton novel to develop.Gritty detective fiction isn't one of my preferred genres, but I took advantage of a free-if-you-write-an-honest-review offer. I hope this review will be useful to someone.

Very atmospheric historical procedural! Try this one if you enjoy books set in another time and place- in this case 1881 Edinburgh. This is a great introduction into what looks as though it will be a good series as Ian, the protagonist, is a young man. He's chasing a very sick killer with the able assistance of his aunt Lillian (she's a hoot) and his colleagues, some of whom are better than others. You will read some of the story from the killer's perspective and beware that this has some dark and ugly parts. It's well written and plotted and genuinely entertaining. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. I read this in the summer but it would be especially good to read on a rainy day.

I listened to this on audiobook and I'm pretty sure this is a case where I would've enjoyed the story more if I'd read it myself. The narrator's voice sounded a bit dry to me and though he did a pretty good job differentiating the voices for all the male characters, his attempts to do the female voices left a lot to be desired. As for the actual story, there's a serial killer in 1880's Edinburgh and D.I. Ian Hamilton, a man haunted by his own tragic past, tasks himself with bringing the killer to justice. I never quite warmed up to Hamilton. He quotes a lot of Shakespeare which was okay at first but grew progressively annoying the more he did it. He's also fairly rude to several characters who didn't deserve it. It also seemed to me that the major clues in the case came because of the efforts of other characters. It never really felt to me that D.I. Hamilton ever did much actual sleuthing himself, unless you count declaring that the second victim was killed by the same person even before seeing the body as proper detective work. The story also felt longer than it needed to be. I attribute part of this to the fact that the author gives life summaries to practically every one-off character that appears on the page. Overall I wasn't sold on the characters or the murderous plot but I may still give the second book a try when it comes out - though I'll read it myself to see if that makes a difference in my level of enjoyment and investment.
