Review

“The important work of recording Kenyan voices is brought to bear in Huttenbach’s excellent compilation: the General’s retelling of the Mau Mau period is highly vivid and complex.”—Focus on the Horn“Those of us who teach African history are always looking for accessible and engaging books to assign our students. Africa is a vast unknown to most American college students. Most of us have developed strategies of easing them into the subject gently. Huttenbach’s book will fit the bill.” —John Edwin Mason, professor of African history at the University of Virginia and author of One Love, Ghoema Beat: Inside the Capetown Carnival“Thambu’s account of the Mau Mau conflict—the central focus of the book—is unique among all the memoirs written by former Mau Mau: it is the only one authored by a non- Kikuyu African. …[It] has the potential to reshape the way we think about Mau Mau in Meru, and more broadly, outside Kikuyuland.” —International Journal of African Historical Studies“Laura Lee did what every one of us in the African history field has always wanted to do. She actually lived with the family of her subject. They ate together, worked together (picking tea), stayed together. There is simply no better way for a White outsider to penetrate the core of Meru history.”—Jeffrey A. Fadiman, author of When We Began, There Were Witchmen: An Oral History from Mount Kenya“This [is] a well-researched book that narrates the life history of a dignified freedom fighter without Western bias.”—Diaspora Messenger“Laura Lee Huttenbach’s debut, The Boy Is Gone: Conversations with a Mau Mau General, is a unique first-hand account of cultural lineage, revolutionary awakening and dogged perseverance told in the voice Japhlet Thambu, a man who seems to have fit several lifetimes into the span of one. It is an essential testimony to those seeking to understand modern-day Kenya.” —Michael Deibert, author of The Democratic Republic of Congo: Between Hope and Despair

Absolutely a wonderful book about the true story of the good and bad experiences of a very interesting life. The author does such a good job that the "General" does speak to the reader. Perseverance of a man who faced obstacles unimaginable to us. Adventure, history, human spirit, human misery, war, freedom fighters, and more. All that makes this a wonderful book.

A wonderful contemporary addition to the literature regarding Kenyan culture and recent history. I find complimentary to the older (and less readable) "Facing Mt. Kenya" by Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.

This book is about life of Mau Mau General. It was an interesting read and I learned about Kenya's rebels. I enjoyed this excellent book very much.

Huttenbach captures an amazing narrative by an important man. The General tells a history I did not know, but I am glad I know it now.

Excellent

Several years ago after returning from two weeks in Kenya I read Something of Value and another book by Robert Ruark about the terrible times in the 1950's when the Mau Mau uprising was occurring. The books were very powerful and I thought that the view might have been somewhat one-sided so now I am glad to have read an interesting account of those times which gives another point of view from someone who actually participated in the events. You can tell that the General was truly a freedom- fighter who loved his country and not a terrorist. Ms Huttenbach has done an excellent job of recording these valuable and interesting conversations.I would think this would be a must-read for students of African history.

About the Author

E. Raymond Capt, M.A., A.I.A., F.S.A., Scot.At first glance, one might think E. Raymond Capt must be an ordained minister. He quotes chapters and verses from the Scriptures and tells about Bible characters in a flowing narrative which would credit any pulpit. What he's been, for over forty years, though, is a practicing archaeologist - not always digging to unearth ancient remains, but in recent years, sifting through known archaeological findings to shed new light on the history of the Bible.Capt holds a Master of Arts degree in Christian History and Biblical Archaeology from Covenant College, Lake Wales, Florida, and California State teaching credentials in Biblical Archaeology and History. He is also a member of the Archaeological Institute of America. In addition to writing, Capt has produced and presents slide and film lectures on Biblical Archaeology. These have been enjoyed by clubs, churches, and schools in many states and in Great Britain. In 1972, Capt was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, and in 1976 received an honorary Doctorate of Literature (Doctor Literarum Honoris Causa) from the Accademia Testina Per Le Scienze, (established A.D. 450) Pescara, Italy.

I love love love this book. So many fascinating components to the Great Pyramid. I highly recommend reading this book. This was the information I was looking for that I couldn't find anywhere else.

Great book as always from E. Raymond Capt collection IPad format

This book brought me into a clear understanding of the pyramids which led me to a further study. Great book well researched and you can trust what is written.

The work is an example of advanced levels of applied hermeneuticology and dialectic physics. Beginning with the mathematical principles of The Giza Structure known as The Great Pyramid of Cheops, only remaining wonder of the world, Capt outlines a series of remarkeable "coincidences" concerning the meaning hidden in the stones. Will satisfy the interests of the learned scholar or pyramidical novice alike. Contains very fine graphics and schematics. Read a copy on loan from a friend which introduced to my mind certain new precepts. It seems more and more likely upon completing this work that the divine will is expressed within the pyramid, a pillar of Egypt as the Prophet Isaiah stated, a gospel in stone.

To this point. It is certain the bset book on The Great Pyramid.E. Raymond Capt is, in my opion, the best writer of Biblical Archaeology. His faith shows through in all his books. A Study of Pyramidology will explain the secrets of the Pyramid that you not hear or see anywhere. Either on Television, or, I would believe, in any magazines on the market. To understand why this is true is way too long an explanation to enter here. But simply put, there is much in this world hidden by those who do not wish you to have certain knowledge of God's great creations. Anyperson, young or old will have their eyes opended to the wonders of this great structure.

Incredible work - very detailed and [almost] understandable to the novice! A more in depth companion to his earlier work, cannot recommend this highly enough.

If you only had one book you could buy on the Symbolisms of the Great Pyramid, this should be it! It covers all aspects of the symbology of the Great Pyramid, has clear diagrams and pictures (almost one per page), is written in current English, and is reasonably priced.

The author's name, I believe, is "E. Raymond Capt" not "E. Raymond"

The Cactus is a wonderful and uplifting novel with an unlikely, quirky and lovable heroine, Susan Green, who is coping with her mother's death, litigation regarding the will, as well as serious personal issues (I don't want to include spoilers). In spite of her world imploding, she'll find love and friendship. It's a novel about family secrets and domestic strife, and how honesty and goodness can overcome the most negative situations. I read it in an afternoon - evening (finished at 2 am). Susan, who tells her story in the first person, engages the reader from page one. It has great secondary characters and a clever plot. It's set mostly in London and Birmingham. I highly recommend it to readers who enjoy well written, feel good novels with unique characters. A delight to read!

Susan is strict, tough, firm and very practical modern woman. Independent and self-efficient. Adapted for living in an unforgiving environment. Just like the cactuses in her ample collection, she developed spikes to protect her from the dangers and predators. But her precisely planned life soon gets turned upside down and her armour slowly starts to dissolve. Soon she realizes not all the people in her life want to hurt her and not all bonds lead to a broken soul.

This is written in the character of the protagonist, but not in the first person. It’s really funny in a few places (I don’t normally laugh at funny books). Somehow it becomes more real and lovely and moving than you think possible. At no stage was I not thoroughly engrossed (I missed ‘wine time’).

This would have to be one of the best books I've ever read. I wish this author would write more!

The book just didn't catch me. I bought it because the Author was said to be similar to Marian Keyes ... this is very far from the true.

The description and the fears and the hopes of a pregnancy are brilliant!

Funny

This is an easy read but it's annoying how over-the-top "prickly" and ridiculous they make the main character. Not just that I don't like her but the story drags on forever while you wait for something new to happen. It was painful.

I bought the full set of of Examples and Explanations for my first year classes, and did not find them particularly helpful. I did not find this as helpful as listening the to the lectures and performing the reading. I guess if one to could attend all lectures, perform all assigned reading, handle extra-curriculars and do the additional reading it might be worth it. But I found very few people have the time to do all that. I did not find this a good substitute for the doing the assigned readings and appearing in lectures, but it can be helpful if you come across a troubling case. I found the value marginal at best.

The "dense" part of the title shouldn't really be taken as a negative as of course a book about property is very dense. In fact when possible the author does attempt to make the reading enjoyable. Sometimes he succeeds sometimes not so much. I believe the book is very helpful in assisting law students with their regular text books. It has many good examples after each chapter and each chapter is usually around 10-15 pages which is not too demanding if you take it one day at a time.If this book could be improved it would have more overarching examples that include material from several chapters, so the reader must choose what is important rather than look for the specific thing talked about in the preceding chapter.

Overall, this book is poor. Not truly abysmal, but of of a generally poor nature. While Burke and Snoe make decent work of explaining the law of Property, and showing examples, the book really needs a better editor. In virtually every chapter, one of the fact patterns didn't make it through the author's revisioning without gaining or losing an appendage. Names will be referenced in the answer ("explanation") to a question, but that name is not in the fact pattern. Example: In the answer to Chapter 28, question 1E, there is a reference to a Bryan and his reliance on a reservation in the easement to Dan. There's no reference to Bryan in Question 1's fact pattern, and it's not particularly easy to see who they meant to refer to.This is not an isolated incident. It's a regular occurrence in the book. And it doesn't inspire much confidence, since I'm using this book to finesse my comprehension of some of the finer points of my Property class.Their policy questions are incredibly vague, as well. I mean, I'm not expecting to be handed the answer in the prompt, but some idea of what I'm expected to be thinking about would help. In addition, and this may be a criticism of the nature of property in general, the book occasionally tells you to "Come back when you've learned X," where X is something from a future chapter. If I need to know both W and X to answer a question, put it in X's latter chapter, not W's former chapter. It's better to refer back to something than to refer forward.I don't have another Property guide to compare this to, I'm only comparing this to my other two E&E books - Glannon's Civil Procedure and Glannon's Torts. Those were excellently done.Burke and Snoe don't do a bad job, they just need someone to spot-check all the errors in their book.

The book is great for getting a birds eye view of property law. In preparing my outline for the exam, this book was essential in making sure that I hadn't missed anything. However, you absolutely will need some other book as well - to supplement the things that this book doesn't totally make clear.Example: Property:E&E swapped the descriptions of title theory and lien theory states for mortgages. My professor could not understand why I was having so much trouble with the concept and it was because the book had not been closely edited. The number of mistakes like this increase as you get towards the end of the book. It's almost like the authors were running out of time and running out of steam and just said, "to heck with it".The lesson is, if you're having trouble with a concept you learned from this book, it might not be your fault.All-in-all, it's a great overview of property law and is accurate MOST of the time. Maybe the next edition will be a little better edited. Buy this book, but double check it against your casebook. Especially since this E&E has almost no references to case names. If your professor wants those kinds of references in your exam, this book won't help you much as all.

I've read some of the reviews and all I can say is, don't let them persuade you not to buy this book! I can only speak for the third edition (perhaps earlier ones weren't as good). All I know is, I was COMPLETELY lost in my property class, absolutely clueless about the estate system, the rule against perpetuities, and almost everything else. I stopped reading for the class and stopped paying attention because I just found the material boring and difficult to follow; I was just lost. But, I've taught myself Property Law from this study aid! About 6 weeks before the final, I started reading this E&E and now, after outlining the material contained in it, I understand estates, perpetuities, everything! I can do all of the practice problems I've tried and I really know what's going on. I'm very confident going into the final that I will do well and that's saying something after how lost I was. It's all thanks to this book. The explanations are clear, the examples really cemented things in my head, the material is presented in a logical manner. I just can't imagine how stressed I'd be without this book. I looked at the Gilbert's for Property, but I just don't like the outline format, there's not enough meat to it. I like the E&E because there's more substance, more to wrap my head around; it seems more thorough than the Gilbert's. Don't hesitate to buy this study aid, no matter how lost you are in property.

This is a must have for property. Everything my teacher discusses is in this book, and a lot of students have found out how amazing this book is and they all use it. It's very helpful for providing clearer explanations of topics, and has not missed a beat regarding the subjects that have been covered in my property class this year. This is probably the only supplement you will need for property - I highly recommend it

I feared religion, feared succumbing to the opiate of the masses. The word "God" troubled me, even while I sought a deeper spirituality. Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit... I blindly closed my mind to anything in Christian terms. But I was fortunate enough to pick up this book at a time in my life when I was beginning to shed many of my judgements, and consider faith not by how others may abuse it or be shackled by it, but how it might empower me to find a deeper happiness. It all started with me re-stumbling upon a quote I read five years ago on how we feared not our inadequacy, but our strength. And it ended up with me finishing this book minutes ago and my mind screeching to a halt, "What? It's over? I need more!" Only the whole point of the book was telling me I don't need to read more, I just need to act on what resonated with me from the words so recently imbibed.I rather doubt I'll ever consider myself Christian. But when you translate the concept of God from a bearded Old Testament crotchety and vengeful powerhouse to the raw and unadulterated purity of love... I don't need to read the Bible to find answers. When the idea of Jesus isn't so much the one and only Son of God, but a state of grace each and everyone of us can become through the shedding of fear... I can relate. When the word Christ is us used to speak to the fact that all of us are connected, rather than a fixation on crucifixion... I can open my mind a crack more. And the concept of the Holy Spirit as the guiding force that allows us to replace fear and its derivatives with love for ourselves and one another... alright, finally Christianity makes at least a lick of sense.Does everything in these pages resonate to me? I'm not sure, but it doesn't need to. The whole point as there is no single right answer, beyond the fact that love is always the right answer. But going to church on Sunday, believing in Jesus, living a life of abstaining from all physical joys or looking upon others or ourselves with judgement and shame... not a prerequisite to finding wisdom in these pages. I would finish a chapter, and the whole world would seem to make more sense. Colors looked better, and I would sink into a feeling of peace is never felt before. The book calls my shift in perception a miracle. I don't think I'm capable of disagreeing on that point. As the author says, this is only the beginning, not the destination. I don't know if I'll read or undertake A Course in Miracles, but I do know that this companion, this interpretation, has changed my world for the better.

So I am not finished with this book yet (about 70% of the way) but I felt like I needed to write a review today because I got to a point in the book where things started to go a bit sideways.I was recommended this book by someone, and I think the underlying message of the book is quite powerful. It basically teaches you to let go, focus on your inner light, aka your love, and let the rest happen as it will. I think this does wonders to curb your anxiety, and in a world were we are constantly bombarded with the collective neurosis that we constantly need to be "doing" and "making things happen," this offers a refreshingly saner perspective. It is counter-intuitive at times how, by letting things unfold as they will, we often get the things we so wanted as a by-product of focusing on our own inner light and bringing love to the world around us. This is where the message of this book is powerful. This book does use Christian theology as the way to explain this process. So it is based a lot on faith and prayer. As an atheist, I was able to overlook this and re-frame some of this as thinking about it in terms of the universe, and allowing the universe to unfold as it will. I don't particularly believe in prayer, but again I was able to overlook this in order to follow the message of the book, which really is about love. However, things got a bit sideways around Chapter 8. The author makes several claims, without citing any sources or studies:1. That the pill that the doctor gives us only heals us because we believe it heals us.2. That holistic medicine is just as effective in treating cancer as traditional medicine, because it is the patient's mental and emotional interaction with his treatment that activates the healing power.3. That when the cure for AIDs is finally found, we will give prizes to a few scientists, but many of us will know that millions and millions of prayers helped it happen.Especially the last one made me yell "Bullshit!" so loud that I am pretty sure I woke my neighbors. First of all, the author provides no evidence to back up the exceptional statements she makes. I don't see any studies or sources which can confirm her rather bold statements. As Hitchens said rather succinctly, "Exceptional claims demand exceptional evidence, and that which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence."In the US especially where anti-scientific attitude is pervasive (see: anti-vaxxers) her words here are actually quite dangerous. I really hope they don't lead people down the wrong path, and that people go to qualified medical professionals for their illnesses rather than try and pray themselves to health. So the book, which uses primarily Christian theology to explain the idea of love, unfortunately also suffers from the insanity of Christian theology in the belief that prayer can cure something like AIDs.Has this book overall been helpful to me, personally? I would say yes, it has. There is beauty and positivity in focusing on giving love and paying attention to your inner light. However, I would only recommend this book with a warning clause that some of the statements made by the author suffer from the archaic (and potentially dangerous) thinking that plagues most theologies.*edit: After finishing the book I still stand by my original review. One thing I wanted to add is that I have been using the “prayers” from the book (I just make them secular) as they seem to be a good way to ease anxiety and emotions when faced with difficult events or thoughts. Coupled with meditation it’s a good way to cope in harder times. The methods in this book are quite good in that regard; reframing your thoughts.

So far I love it. I have been a MW fan for two decades. I am really "working" the program. It contains 14 Lessons. Of hand it mentions that it is a lesson per day. The first lesson has taken me a month to date and I still have a few more words to work through. There are a list of emotions to release. You are supposed to choose those that apply. Of course, they all apply. I spend about 30 minutes journaling on each. I do one word per day. There are about 28 words. After a couple of weeks I realized I was doing the mental work but not the emotional release. Now I am going back over the list and really allowing myself to feel the feelings, express them (privately), surrender them. It is really working. I am feeling it lift off my shoulders. I have been able to modify my diet.

This first edition of "A Food Lover's Guide to Kansas City" is a useful, well-written introduction to the surprisingly varied and high-quality food scene in Kansas City. The book is very up-to-date, covering many restaurants and food stores that only recently opened. Long-time residents will find the book useful and handy, but it will probably be of even greater use to visitors and new residents who want to know more about the food scene in this Midwestern metropolis.Although the book covers a lot of ground, there are still gaps and notable omissions that I hope will be filled in future editions (and I do hope there are future editions)! The coverage of ethnic markets is a bit spotty -- no mention, for example, of the colossal 888 International Asian Market in Johnson County, or a couple of large supermarkets that have very large selections of Mexican ingredients. The book pays somewhat short shrift to suburban Johnson County, with a population that is now larger than Kansas City proper, which has a plethora of ethnic markets and restaurants that are of metro-wide interest. There is little coverage of Northeast Kansas City, which has numerous immigrant communities and restaurants and markets that serve them, and no coverage of Independence, Eastern Jackson County, or nearby Lawrence, KS (home of the University of Kansas and a number of fine restaurants and stores that attract people from the metro area). Those quibbles aside, this is the best book I've seen on the culinary possibilities of Kansas City -- the restaurant and store reviews are well-written and thoughtful and definitely make you want to try (or return to) the restaurants included. Visitors and newcomers will find it invaluable. And the author generously points out other sources of information, in print or online, for finding out even more about Kansas City's culinary resources.

Since my review would be almost identical to the one written by trilingual1946, I will add just this: it would be nice if there were a website for the book where one could suggest places to be included in future additions. (If there is such a site, I was unable to find it.)This little book --especially when paired with a gift certificate from one of the businesses listed-- makes a great gift for anyone new to the KC region or for those who may know only one area of the city. The people to whom we've given this book love it.Even if, like us, you know the city quite well, get yourself a copy and keep in the car. You'll use it more than you think.

We enjoy finding unusual place to eat out, & when my friend recommended this book I found it here & ordered as a gift for my husband. He has already marked new places to visit; we have also found many we've already tried & agree mostly with the summaries about them. Looking forward to more culinary exploration in the KC area.

I'm looking forward to giving this to my husband for Father's Day.

It would be a crime to live in Kansas City and not own this book. This is an epicurean's guide to Nirvana. It is an excellent listing of all the places you must visit but haven't out of ignorance of their existence. A well written book that actually made me guffaw multiple times. Buy it and check off the places as you visit them. I have lived in Kansas City all my life and this book has made it interesting again.

Writing Places is a very entertaining read. But as with all of Mr. Zinsser's books,it reminds you that writing must also be helpful. The book addresses all kinds of helpful ideas. Such as self-evolution. That one's work ( his classic "On Writing Well" in this case) may need re-evaluation and revision over the course of time. His journey describes the complexity of the art of teaching the craft of writing. I didn't think such a thing could be articulated, but he does it. He is William Zinsser after all. He covers helpful ideas including journalistic ethics, history, family, and learning how to learn. Within the notion of helpful writing lies Zinsser's characteristic generosity of spirit. Helping is giving. If you are a writer, give yourself the collection of all of this writer's books. At the very least keep William Zinsser book titles on a list, and give them as gifts to the accomplished and would-be writers in your life.

This is quite simply a terrific book. If I have a complaint, it's the usual one regarding William Zinsser's work. I wished there were more. But if it had been longer, it wouldn't have been genuine Zinsser. One of his prime rules is to 'reduce clutter.' If Zinsser is hard on his students about editing out extraneous stuff, he's obviously twice as hard on himself. Because Writing Places, like his other books about writing and his life, has been mercilessly edited and honed to absolute shining perfection. I despair at ever coming close to this kind of writing myself. And I am an adherent to Zinsser's work too. I first read his classic tome, On Writing Well, about five years ago and just loved it. But as a follower I'm probably kind of a failure. I think it all matters, so ...I've also read his book, Writing About Your Life, which didn't have nearly enough about his own life (just my opinion, of course), so I was very excited to hear he'd finally written an actual memoir. Writing Places was a pleasure to read, but, as I've already said, I wished for more, particularly about his childhood and youth and his WWII service. Something like Andy Rooney did in MY WAR, or Sam Hynes in his two excellent memoirs, The Growing Seasons and Flights of Passage. If Zinsser ever decides to do this, I'd predict an instant bestseller, because there just aren't many more WWII memoirs that will still be written. The reading public is still hungry for such accounts though; witness the recent success in England of RAF pilot Geoffrey Wellum's book, First Light - a wonderful account of flying and the Battle of Britain. What the hell though. I do so appreciate everything Zinsser has already shared with us. And what he's tried to teach us about good writing. My next assignment: to read his books about music and baseball - EASY TO REMEMBER and SPRING TRAINING. Particularly the first one, because Zinsser is an accomplished jazz pianist of many years standing. Gotta read that one. In the meantime, keep writing, Mr Zinsser, and I'll keep reading. - Tim Bazzett, author of the memoir, BOOKLOVER

You should buy anything by the late William Zinsser, he's that good.

Great book! LOVE Zinsser! Wish I had discovered him earlier in my career. All his books a Must read for Any writer!

An interesting and well written glimpse into the writing profession and the craft of writing itself, which Zinsser has mastered. If you want a rare look at writing as a career from multiple angles and at the same time learn what great writing is like, this book will take you there.

Engaging autobiography.

Wonderful auto-biographical about places Mr. Zinsser did his writing, how he decided where to write and why place matters -- not just to geographers.

This book is a joy to read, even where Zinsser spends a little too much time on his own successes.
