The author writes in an easy to read manner. She has a lot of interesting takes on life in Texas. Not having lived in Texas, I cannot speak from first hand experience. However, I cant help but wonder if at least some of her new found love for Texas is rationalized and how much truly heart felt. After all if you are stuck some place are you not likely to want to find reasons to like it to avoid being utterly miserable the whole time? In any event, it gave me new insight into what life in Texas is like assuming it has not changed massively in the last 15 years and was an entertaining read.
It’s somewhat entertaining but the better Texas transition book is God Save Texas!!
I wrote the author and asked her if this would be good for a guy. She wrote back "Skip the part on dating and how to dress and you will be fine". We had moved from NJ to the Austin area. Her observations were spot on (and had me laughing out loud). Would definitely recommend this for anyone moving from the north to Texas or vis-a-versa. Also would recommend this for any Texans with "Yankee" friends
fun read but not accurate
I read this book several years ago and saved it for a re-read. The second time I found it even more entertaining. I can't decide whether to pass it on to a Yankee friend or hold on to it to read a third time around.As a Texan (Dallas born and bred) I am familiar with most if not all the Texas references in this book. I came to realize that things that I assumed were normal behavior were a little strange to northerners and easterners. The observations in the book were not intended to ridicule or defend the Texas way, but rather to bring into focus our endearing lifestyle. Dembling offers her insight on her personal experiences as she seems to have enjoyed sampling a little bit (and sometimes a lot) of what Texas has to offer. Welcome, Sophia. We're glad to have you.
I bought this as a gift for a niece who is moving to Texas from Seattle. This may help with the culture shock, or ease her transition. She texted me the night she received it and said she was up until 2:00 in the morning reading and really enjoying this book. She looks forward to moving.
I'm a Native Texan and found this book to be thoroughly delightful and pretty spot on. It's evident that much thought and research were put in. I'd not only recommend this book for newcomers to Texas, but also for Native Texans as well. Very accurate and entertaining!!
I only read a little of it, but if you know a young lady going to Texas, it probably would be a good gift.
