Unfortunately, this is a poorly written opinion piece ….basically it reads like gonzo journalism…..apparently Mr. Hunt was at early conversations between Knight and Bowerman, even though he wasn’t born yet. It also appears that he accompanied Lynn and Dave Frohnmayer on their desperate journey to save the lives of their 3 daughters that all lost their battle with Fanconi Anemia. Per Mr. Hunts narrative, he was intimately involved in the decision-making process with respect to various “radical†medical therapies for the girls as well as all the family decisions surrounding their fight to save their children.Great opinion pieces are supported with facts and data. They are authentic and part of a larger conversation. What they are NOT is a self-promoting, reactionary, cherry picked collection of other viewpoints.Yes, people care about the relationship between UO and Nike….and they should. But this book does very little to present a topic that requires a balanced, objective perspective. What it also does is exploit a family’s tragedy to bolster sales, which I find DEEPLY disturbing.I was trying to think of a way to eloquently speak to Mr. Hunts complete lack of empathy for his fellow human (ironic, provided he is calling out Mr. Knight for exactly the same thing) when I stumbled upon an article in the Eugene Register Guard written my Lynn Frohnmayer herself. So, allow me to post that right here:“I am profoundly dismayed about the book “University of Nike†by Joshua Hunt, which was the subject of a column published Oct. 26 by The Register-Guard.The book purports to be a deep-dive “investigation†into how corporate dollars have “bought American higher education,†but the truth is that it exploits my family’s tragedies in support of a sensational and patently false narrative.I might ignore a writer’s careless disregard for the facts, but this book distresses me so deeply that I cannot overlook its glaring inaccuracies and shoddy reporting, at least as they pertain to my family and Phil Knight. My daughters, Katie, Kirsten and Amy, died from complications related to Fanconi anemia. My husband, former University of Oregon President David Frohnmayer, and I dedicated much of our lives to finding a cure for this rare genetic disorder. We founded the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund in 1989.Phil Knight, Nike’s founder and our family friend, first contributed to the fund in 1994. Since then, he and his wife, Penny, along with thousands of other donors, have helped us raise more than $42 million to fund research that has advanced our knowledge and treatment of Fanconi anemia and of cancer.Hunt has twisted Knight’s generosity into a work of fiction. It is well-documented that in April 2000, when UO joined the Workers’ Rights Consortium — an organization that criticized working conditions at Nike’s overseas factories — Knight halted planned gifts to UO. Hunt falsely asserts that Knight also withdrew his support of FARF during that time. Hunt insinuates that Knight was willing to jeopardize our 10-year-old daughter Amy’s survival in order to bend the UO president to his will. UO Professor Nathan Tublitz, quoted in the book, describes Knight’s alleged cruelty as “a loaded gun†pointed at Amy’s head. Hunt even suggests that in early 2001, I was “on the verge of a nervous breakdown†because Knight had ended his support of FARF.This narrative could not be farther from the truth. On Dec. 22, 2000, just eight months after UO joined the WRC, Knight wrote a check to FARF for one million dollars. On Dec. 18, 2001, he wrote a second million-dollar check to FARF. The Knights’ support of Fanconi anemia research was never affected by the WRC controversy.Hunt erroneously suggests that the Knights’ support of FA research was our only hope of saving Amy, as if one generous donor could ensure a cure for one specific child. Furthermore, the suggestion that our Fund relied solely on the Knights is insulting to the more than 45,000 people and businesses that have supported our research since 1989.While Hunt’s reporting about Knight’s support of FARF is the most egregious inaccuracy from my perspective, the book contains dozens of other distortions and untruths about my family.Hunt reports that Dave and I took our daughter Kirsten to Harvard Medical School to explore “radical†therapy. Not true.He asserts that our daughter Katie had a narrowing of the carotid artery, which caused a stroke. Not true. He claims Katie had a second stroke that paralyzed half of her body. Not true.He writes that gamma globulin injections revitalized Katie enough to join the family for a “summer skiing trip to Utah.†Not true. She never had these injections and our family never went on a summer skiing trip to Utah. Does anyone? When challenged, Hunt claims that the end notes at the back of the book verify his facts. I disagree.Hunt called me late one night in July to “verify†two assertions in his book. I told him both were wrong and he needed to check his facts. I urged him to contact FARF about the Knights’ giving history. He never did. Hunt never interviewed me about my family or my children’s medical history.Manipulating a family’s tragedy to bolster a faulty narrative is both intrusive and unethical. If the accuracy of this portion of Hunt’s book is representative of the whole, then one can only conclude that this is a very flawed project.Lynn Frohnmayer is a co-founder of the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund and serves on the fund’s board of directors. She obtained her BA from Stanford University and an MSW from Smith College, School for Social Work.At the end of the book Mr. Hunt states: “It should also be noted that certain facts presented here will invariably be disputed by some of the parties concerned. In each case, I’ve done my best to be dispassionate when deciding which sources to privilege, and I feel comfortable with the choices I’ve made.â€Dispassionate indeed Mr. Hunt. May you never know the pain of losing a child, let alone three.
Living in Eugene, Oregon since I moved here in 1979, I've had a front row seat to much of what's written about in this well researched book. College sports is entertainment, but at what cost do we want to cheer our favorite teams while turning a blind eye to what goes on behind the proverbial curtain? This is a fascinating look at not just the current state of college athletics, but also a great look back at the history of how collegiate athletics got to where it is.
This book is a must for anyone interested in higher education, Oregon politics, Nike, and corporate overreach. And it's also recommended for anyone for enjoys narrative nonfiction.
I bought this for my husband, who is a big track and field fan. He has always been interested in Nike's involvement in the University of Oregon's track program. He read this book in about two days and told me that he really enjoyed it!
Meticulously researched, expertly written, and, best of all, compassionate and understanding. This book is truly eye-opening, both in terms of the history of Nike as well as the ramifications for what many would consider benign actions.
This book is a riveting story about how good people can do bad things in the name of institutional loyalty--and branding. There are several threads in University of Nike--including the pain of losing 3 children to a genetic disease--but the focus is on the cover-up by university employees of sexual abuse by star athletes. This book was a gift from a close friend who is a long-time University of Oregon supporter and a former Nike consumer.I highly recommend Joshua Hunt's book for anyone and everyone who is interested in the role of athletics--and money--at our universities.
A real eye opener, and a compelling, urgent read for anyone interested in higher education, sport, or the corrosive effects of austerity and unfettered capitalism.
Comprehensively researched and masterfully argued!
